A “connection reset” means the RTMP socket or session ended; it does not identify why. Before changing FFmpeg flags, check whether the failure happens as publishing starts or after video has been flowing, verify the current YouTube ingest URL and stream key, and then examine encoder health and outbound connectivity. FFmpeg’s TCP options can change connection behavior, but neither is a documented universal fix for a reset.
First identify when the reset happens
Save the complete FFmpeg stderr output, the exact command, and the time of the failure. Redact the stream key from commands and logs before sharing them: a stream key grants access to publish to your YouTube stream.

- Reset during connect or as publishing begins: prioritize the destination URL, stream key, protocol, and any URL overrides.
- Reset after successful output: check encoder and network health over the period leading up to the disconnect, as well as YouTube’s stream-health messages.
The phrase “connection reset” alone cannot distinguish a bad destination from an encoder, network, or other transport problem.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Verify YouTube’s destination and stream key
- Open the current stream in YouTube Live Control Room and compare its stream URL and key with the values configured in FFmpeg. YouTube’s third-party encoder troubleshooting guidance specifically recommends copying the stream key from Live Control Room into the encoder when troubleshooting start errors.
- Check the complete FFmpeg output URL, including its server, optional port, application, and stream identifier. FFmpeg can derive the application and playpath from the URL, but
rtmp_appandrtmp_playpathcan override those values. Inspect any such options before editing the URL or adding flags. See the FFmpeg RTMP protocol documentation. - Use the RTMPS destination and settings supported by your installed FFmpeg build. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which it describes as a secure extension to RTMP. Its stream settings guidance covers the destination details; its encoder guidance recommends RTMPS.
Do not assume a familiar URL is still the active destination: compare against the values shown for the current stream.

- Compatible with Windows 8.1 or higher, Mac OS
Check encoder health and YouTube-compatible settings
A settings mismatch can impair ingest or stream health, but that does not establish that it caused a particular TCP reset. Check the local encode and compare the actual output settings with YouTube’s current recommendations for the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate.
- FFmpeg build and local output: YouTube advises checking encoder version and health. If the build is old, test with a current supported build; inspect stderr and local CPU load for encoding errors or overload.
- Rate control: YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) for encoder output.
- Keyframes: target a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.
- Bitrate: use the row for the actual codec, resolution, and frame rate in YouTube’s live encoder settings table. For H.264, YouTube’s table recommends 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. Those are mode-specific recommendations, not interchangeable targets.
Test the stream before an event and monitor YouTube’s stream-health indicators. If YouTube reports a media or connection warning, record the message and timestamp rather than treating it as proof of a single root cause.

Check the outbound network path
If FFmpeg is producing healthy output locally, test whether the machine’s outbound connection to YouTube remains stable. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends testing outbound connection strength and contacting the ISP if outbound access is unreliable.

- Compare the timing of the reset with YouTube’s live health messages and the network’s own connection logs.
- Where available, a wired Ethernet connection can be a controlled comparison with the existing network path. It is a troubleshooting comparison, not a guaranteed remedy.
- If the publishing host is managed by a cloud or hosting provider, ask that provider to check outbound connectivity and relevant firewall or routing events at the failure time.
What FFmpeg’s TCP options actually change
FFmpeg’s RTMP protocol runs over TCP/IP. Its documented tcp_nodelay option disables Nagle’s algorithm, while tcp_keepalive enables the basic TCP keepalive mechanism. Both are documented with a default of 0. They alter TCP behavior; FFmpeg’s documentation does not present either as a general cure for connection resets.

| Option | Documented behavior | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
tcp_nodelay |
Disables Nagle’s algorithm. | It does not prove the reset is caused by packet buffering or repair an incorrect destination. |
tcp_keepalive |
Enables the basic socket TCP keepalive option. | It does not provide platform-specific tuning in the RTMP documentation or guarantee recovery from a reset. |
Before testing either option, check the documentation for your installed FFmpeg version and its ffmpeg -h protocol=rtmp output. Place an option in the correct output option group for your command; do not copy a flag bundle without confirming that the options apply to the output connection. FFmpeg’s protocol options have protocol-specific semantics. In particular, do not treat timeout as a magic reconnect setting: the RTMP documentation describes it in the listening/incoming-connection context, and timeout meaning and units vary by protocol.
Troubleshoot by evidence
- Publishing fails immediately: re-check the current stream URL and key, RTMP versus RTMPS destination, and whether
rtmp_apporrtmp_playpathoverrides the URL. - Publishing starts, then drops: retain timestamps and inspect local encoder output, CPU load, outbound connection stability, and YouTube’s health messages around the drop.
- Output is healthy but resets continue: if the key and destination are current and outbound connectivity appears stable, provide YouTube or the network/hosting provider with the exact failure time, destination protocol, FFmpeg version and build, and redacted error sequence.
The official guidance does not identify one cause or a reset-specific incident rate for an unspecified “connection reset.” Diagnose from the failure stage and supporting logs rather than assuming a particular flag will fix it.
