First confirm that the encoder is using the RTMPS server URL shown in YouTube Live Control Room and supports RTMPS. If the connection succeeds but the health warning remains, use the exact warning text to check the stream’s codec, bitrate, keyframes, audio and video settings, resolution, and available upload bandwidth.
Why a warning can appear after switching to RTMPS
RTMPS is RTMP carried over TLS/SSL, which encrypts the stream in transit. YouTube supports both protocols; switching transport alone does not mean you need to change your video format. However, the encoder must support RTMPS and use the correct RTMPS server URL. YouTube notes: “You can stream to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.” YouTube Help: Stream with RTMPS.

A health warning is not necessarily a transport error. Live Control Room can report problems with encoding settings or the incoming stream even when the connection is established. The warning’s wording is the best clue to which branch to follow.
Diagnose the warning in order
- Read the exact message and timestamp. In Live Control Room, check the message beside the Health Indicator. An unresolved issue continues to appear. Red errors are critical and can prevent an event from starting or affect viewers; yellow errors are moderate and may reduce quality. Use the message, rather than the timing of the protocol change alone, to guide the fix. YouTube Help: Fix live stream errors.
- Copy the RTMPS endpoint from YouTube. Open the scheduled stream or Stream tab in Live Control Room. Under Stream settings, use the lock control to reveal the RTMPS URL, then copy that URL and the stream key into your encoder. The interface may show an RTMP URL by default, so make sure you explicitly reveal and select the RTMPS version. Do not substitute an example server address for the one displayed in your account. - If you see an SSL or certificate error, check the URL and port. Confirm that both the protocol and server use
rtmps, notrtmp. If the URL appears correct but the certificate error persists, try port 443 in the URL or the encoder’s port setting, while keeping YouTube’s actual server address. YouTube Help: Stream with RTMPS. - If the encoder times out, verify RTMPS support. Recheck the server URL, consult the encoder’s documentation, and update the encoder if appropriate. Look for a built-in YouTube RTMPS preset before entering server details manually. If a timeout remains, YouTube says the encoder may not support RTMPS. YouTube Help: Stream with RTMPS.
- If the stream connects, fix the health category it reports. YouTube’s error categories include format and codec, bitrate, audio streams and channels, video streams and interlacing, frame rate, keyframe frequency, resolution, and mismatches between primary and backup streams. Change the setting named by the error rather than changing transport again. YouTube Help: Fix live stream errors.
Check encoder settings against YouTube’s guidance
Use YouTube’s current encoder settings table for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you actually send. Supported video codecs include H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1; YouTube lists frame rates up to 60 fps and recommends constant bitrate (CBR) encoding. These settings do not imply that every encoder, ingest route, or event configuration supports every option. YouTube Help: Encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds.
- Bitrate: Match the recommendation for your codec, resolution, and frame rate. For example, YouTube’s table lists 14 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p30 and 10 Mbps for AV1 or H.265 at 1080p30. Those figures are specific to those combinations, not universal targets; check the applicable row in the current table.
- Audio and video: Check the warning for mismatched stream settings, unsupported format, audio channel issues, interlacing, or frame-rate problems. Avoid changing unrelated settings when the message identifies a narrower cause.
- Primary and backup streams: If you send a backup stream, check that its settings match the primary stream where YouTube requires them to.
Make sure your upload connection has enough headroom
The encoder’s outgoing bitrate must fit the upload capacity actually available to it. YouTube recommends about 20% bandwidth headroom; network sharing or interruptions can still affect reliability. For dual-streaming or failover, allow for the combined bitrate of the primary and backup streams, plus headroom. If the upload connection is shared, other devices or activity may reduce the capacity available to the encoder. Before buying equipment, compare the encoder’s configured bitrate with the upload bandwidth available during the stream and address any specific network constraint you identify.

Test before the scheduled event
- Set up a test stream with representative motion and audio so the preview exercises the settings you intend to use.
- Start the encoder and check the preview and Health Indicator in Live Control Room. Confirm that the event is reachable and watch for new or continuing messages.
- For a scheduled event, YouTube’s streaming tips suggest setting it up at least two hours in advance and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before the scheduled time. YouTube Help: Live streaming tips.
