A YouTube RTMP connection error from an Ubuntu VPS is not automatically a DNS or firewall problem. First copy the current RTMPS server URL from YouTube Studio, check the error type and encoder support, and then test the VPS’s outbound network path. YouTube specifically recommends trying port 443 for a persistent SSL error; it does not publish a universal Ubuntu firewall command or DNS change for this failure.
Start with the URL and the exact error
Before changing firewall rules or resolvers, identify the message your encoder reports and verify the destination. YouTube’s instructions distinguish an SSL error from a connection timeout and an encoder startup error; each points to a different first check.

- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and select the stream’s Stream settings.
- Copy the current server URL shown there. To reveal the RTMPS URL, use the lock icon. The default URL may be ordinary RTMP, so check both the protocol and server rather than assuming the displayed default is RTMPS.
- Paste the exact URL into the encoder’s server field. Do not guess a hostname or path, or reuse an old URL from another stream configuration. See YouTube’s RTMPS instructions.
- Record whether the encoder reports an SSL/certificate error, a timeout, or a startup error. That distinction determines what to test next.
YouTube’s live stream settings guidance describes the stream key as a password for the stream. Keep it private; do not paste it into public logs, screenshots, or support posts.

Fix an SSL error: verify RTMPS and try port 443
If the URL appears correct but the encoder reports a persistent SSL error, first confirm that the scheme and server match the RTMPS values in Live Control Room. YouTube advises trying port 443 in the RTMPS URL or in the encoder’s port setting. The hostname in YouTube’s example is illustrative, not a substitute for the actual endpoint assigned to your stream. Follow YouTube’s RTMPS guidance and use the exact server URL shown in Studio.

Do not interpret the port 443 suggestion as proof that every failed connection is caused by a blocked firewall port. It is a specific check for a persistent SSL error. If it does not resolve that error, continue with the encoder and network checks below.
Fix a timeout: confirm the encoder supports RTMPS
For a connection timeout, YouTube advises verifying the server URL and whether the encoder supports RTMPS. Check the encoder’s documentation and update it if an update is available. An encoder that supports only RTMP may not be able to connect to the RTMPS endpoint you copied. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting steps cover URL and encoder checks.

A timeout by itself does not establish that DNS failed or that a firewall blocked the connection. Verify those possibilities using evidence from the VPS rather than inferring the cause from the symptom alone.

If the encoder reports a startup error, copy the current stream key from the stream’s Live Control Room settings and replace the value saved in the encoder. A stale or mismatched key can prevent the encoder from starting the stream. Keep the key confidential because it functions like a stream password. Check outbound connectivity, firewall policy, and DNS
Once the URL, encoder support, and key are correct, investigate the VPS network path. YouTube recommends testing the outbound internet connection when the encoder appears healthy but cannot reach the service. On a VPS, the relevant controls may include the operating-system firewall, a provider dashboard security group, or the host’s network policy.
- Ask the VPS provider about egress restrictions. Give support the exact RTMPS endpoint copied from Live Control Room, the error text, the time of a failed attempt, and whether the encoder is configured for port 443. Ask whether outbound connections to that endpoint are restricted for your instance. Do not assume that every India VPS has the same policy.
- Inspect the firewall that actually applies. Check both Ubuntu’s local rules and any provider-level firewall or security group. Look for outbound restrictions relevant to the endpoint and port you are testing. The available YouTube guidance does not specify a universal Ubuntu command, firewall rule set, or provider-independent egress policy for this issue, so do not apply guessed rules blindly.
- Check DNS as a diagnostic, not a presumed cure. Verify that the hostname in the exact YouTube URL resolves from the VPS using the tools and resolver configuration available on that system. Compare the result with the provider’s guidance if needed. No YouTube-specific DNS repair is established for this error; changing to a public resolver is not an official, guaranteed fix.
- Test available upload capacity. YouTube recommends keeping 20% upload-bandwidth headroom, counting the primary and backup stream bitrates where applicable. If the VPS has limited or shared network capacity, test the connection while the stream is sending, not only when idle. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
For provider escalation, distinguish a DNS lookup failure from a successful lookup followed by a failed connection. Include the exact error and endpoint, but redact the stream key. YouTube also recommends outbound connectivity testing in its stream troubleshooting instructions.

Check encoder output after the connection works
If the VPS can reach YouTube and the encoder connects but the stream is unstable or unhealthy, check the outgoing media settings. YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS as streaming protocols, H.264, H.265, and AV1 as common video codecs, AAC or MP3 audio, and CBR encoding. Match the encoder configuration to YouTube’s current recommendations in encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions. Test before an important broadcast and monitor stream health rather than assuming a successful connection guarantees suitable media output.
