For a stable 24/7 YouTube stream, match the bitrate to your codec, resolution and frame rate, then leave upload headroom. YouTube’s global recommendations for H.264 are 14 Mbps at 1080p30, 17 Mbps at 1080p60, and 8 Mbps at 720p30 or 720p60. India has no separate bitrate table: test the sustained upload capacity where the stream will run.
Recommended YouTube live bitrates
These are live-ingestion recommendations from YouTube’s encoder settings guidance, not settings for uploading a prerecorded video. Choose the row matching your output resolution and frame rate, then use the column for the codec your encoder sends.

The minimum figures are not quality targets. If your encoder and workflow support H.265 or AV1, their recommended rates are lower in these examples than H.264; do not apply those rates to an H.264 stream.
Practical encoder profile for a 24/7 stream
For a broadly compatible starting point, use H.264 at 1080p30 and 14 Mbps, or 1080p60 and 17 Mbps if the extra motion detail is useful and your connection can sustain it. For a weaker or variable connection, 720p30 or 720p60 at 8 Mbps is a lower-bandwidth H.264 choice. Select a lower stable profile rather than setting the stream at the full measured upload speed.

- Protocol: RTMPS where supported; YouTube recommends it because it encrypts stream data on its way to and through Google’s servers. RTMP is also supported.
- Rate control: CBR.
- Keyframes: 2-second interval recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Video codec: H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1, provided the encoder supports your selected codec.
- Frame rate: Up to 60 fps.
- Color: Rec. 709, 8-bit SDR for SDR video.
- Audio: AAC or MP3. For stereo, YouTube recommends 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps; for 5.1, AAC at 48 kHz and 384 kbps.
YouTube transcodes live video into multiple output formats for viewers, but that does not remove the need to send a stable, correctly configured feed.
How much upload speed to reserve
YouTube says the total bitrate of a stream must fit within available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. Plan against outbound upload capacity, not download speed. Shared household, office or venue use can reduce the bandwidth available to the stream.

Example: 1080p30 H.264
At the recommended 14 Mbps stream bitrate, applying YouTube’s 20% margin means planning for roughly 17.5 Mbps of consistently available upload capacity (14 ÷ 0.8). This is a calculation from YouTube’s margin, not a guaranteed ISP plan speed or an India-specific requirement. If sending a separate backup feed, add its bitrate to the primary feed before applying the margin.
Test the actual connection
- Test outbound upload at the location and on the connection that will carry the stream.
- Repeat at representative busy times, with normal network use present.
- Test with audio and movement similar to the intended stream; YouTube recommends testing before going live.
- While live, watch YouTube’s stream health and messages. A brief speed-test peak does not establish that a connection will remain stable around the clock.

What changes when streaming from India?
The cited YouTube recommendations depend on codec, resolution and frame rate—not country. They do not specify an India-only bitrate, minimum internet plan, preferred ISP or regional RTMP server. Measure the connection at the actual stream location: performance can vary by provider, venue, time, congestion and other users sharing the network.
Set up the YouTube stream and connect the encoder
- In YouTube Studio, create a live stream using an encoder. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions to obtain the stream URL and key.
- In the encoder, select the matching codec, resolution and frame rate, then set the bitrate from the table above. Configure CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval and RTMPS where supported.
- Enter YouTube’s stream URL and stream key in the encoder. Treat the key as private; anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your channel.
- Run a test, check YouTube’s stream health and correct any warnings before relying on the feed for continuous operation.
24/7 streaming, archives and rights
Do not assume a single 24-hour archive
YouTube’s encoder setup guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. It does not establish that one uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast will be saved as a complete archive. If you need a full recording, verify YouTube’s current behavior and arrange an independent local or cloud recording workflow.

Use content you have the right to stream
A continuous broadcast still needs to comply with YouTube’s copyright rules. Make sure you have rights to the video, music and other material in the feed; a bitrate setting does not prevent copyright claims or guarantee that a stream will remain available. Review YouTube’s current rules for the content you plan to use before going live.
