To run science lessons continuously on YouTube, use an encoder stream in YouTube Studio and OBS Studio’s VLC Video source to play and loop local lesson files. You need VLC installed, a verified channel with live streaming enabled, permission to stream every video and audio track, and a plan to monitor the computer, power and internet connection. OBS’s documented playlist workflow is for media files—not a YouTube-hosted playlist URL.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel that is verified, eligible for live streaming and has no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. YouTube says first-time live streaming can take up to 24 hours to become available, so enable it ahead of your planned start. Its guidance also says streamers must be at least 16 years old. See YouTube live streaming tips and Get started with live streaming.
- OBS Studio and VLC installed on the streaming computer. OBS’s VLC Video source requires VLC; if you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. See OBS Media Sources.
- Local media files for the lessons, arranged in the order you want them to repeat.
- Streaming rights for every lesson, image, music track and other element in the files.
- A reliable computer, power supply and network connection, plus a person or monitoring plan able to respond if any of them fails.
How to create the live stream and connect OBS
- Enable live streaming in advance. Check your channel’s eligibility and turn on live streaming before the day you plan to broadcast. If this is your first stream, allow for YouTube’s stated enablement delay of up to 24 hours.
- Create or schedule an encoder stream. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream using an encoder. In the stream settings, copy the server URL and stream key.
- Keep the stream key private. YouTube treats it like a password and address for your broadcast. Do not share it or publish it. If you think it has been exposed, reset it in your live stream settings. See Manage live stream settings.
- Enter the connection details in OBS. Open OBS’s stream settings, select YouTube as the service if available, and enter the server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio. If you select a custom server, use the copied server URL and key exactly. Labels can vary between OBS versions.
- Test the connection before going live. Start the encoder, check that the feed appears in Live Control Room preview, and review stream health and audio/video quality before starting the public broadcast. YouTube’s encoder instructions are at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
How to set up OBS to stream a repeating playlist
- Install VLC before configuring OBS. OBS’s VLC Video source depends on VLC being installed; match 64-bit VLC to 64-bit OBS.
- Add the playlist source. In OBS, add a VLC Video source. Add the local lesson files to its playlist and arrange them in the order viewers should see them.
- Enable looping. Turn on Loop Playlist in the source’s settings so playback returns to the first file after the final one.
- Check the scene and audio. Confirm the video fits the stream canvas, the correct scene is active, and lesson audio is audible without clipping or unintended silence. Preview the source from beginning to end, including the transition from the final file back to the first.
- Start the encoder and verify the preview. Start streaming from OBS, wait for the feed in YouTube Live Control Room, and confirm the playlist is playing before you start the live broadcast.
These OBS instructions describe a playlist of media files. They do not establish that OBS’s VLC Video source can ingest a YouTube-hosted playlist URL directly. Downloading or reusing videos also does not grant permission to rebroadcast them.
Can you stream a YouTube playlist 24/7?
Not by assuming that a YouTube playlist URL can be pasted into OBS’s VLC Video source. The documented setup is to add media files to that source and enable Loop Playlist. If the lessons are only available as hosted YouTube videos, this workflow does not establish a supported direct-ingest method; use files you are entitled to stream and configure them as the local media playlist.
Prepare the lessons, audio and rights
Confirm permission for every element
Only broadcast lessons and audio for which your channel has the necessary rights. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content; a match can replace the stream with a placeholder, interrupt it or terminate it. Even if you have a licence, the rights owner may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams explains the platform’s checks.

YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions state: “You represent and warrant that you have all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world, including, without limitation, music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses) and any other royalty participants.” That obligation applies to the complete broadcast, not only the main lesson content.
Make the loop usable as a lesson channel
- Put files in a deliberate teaching order; OBS plays the playlist in the order you set.
- Check that each file has its intended audio and that playback does not introduce long unintended gaps or abrupt transitions.
- Review the full loop, including the final-to-first transition, before leaving the stream unattended.
- Keep a separate copy of the lesson files and the playlist order so you can restore the setup if the computer or source configuration fails.
Bandwidth, monitoring and continuous operation
YouTube recommends upload bandwidth with 20% headroom above the total bitrate being sent. That is a recommendation, not a guarantee: shared network use and connection disruptions can still interrupt a stream. Review YouTube streaming tips and keep an eye on Live Control Room’s stream health.

A 24/7 broadcast depends on more than the playlist: OBS must keep running, the computer needs power, and the network must remain connected. Arrange monitoring and a response plan for encoder, computer, power or network failures. The cited YouTube guidance does not specify a guaranteed uptime or a universal hardware specification for every resolution and stream duration.
Plan the replay and archive separately
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That guidance does not establish that one continuous 24-hour stream will create one complete replay. If a full replay matters, check YouTube’s current archive limits and plan stream boundaries accordingly; test and verify any local recording you rely on. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder and YouTube live streaming tips.

Software encoder or dedicated hardware?
OBS is a practical software starting point for a local media-file playlist. YouTube supports software and hardware encoders and maintains a verified encoder list; it describes the CamStreamer App as supporting continuous 24/7 and scheduled streams. A hardware encoder is optional, not a prerequisite. Before buying or relying on one for unattended operation, verify that the specific model supports your media and destination, and check its operating requirements, support and compatibility with your network and channel. No single hardware requirement follows from the lesson-stream use case alone.
Troubleshooting common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| OBS does not show a VLC Video source or the source fails to play. | VLC is missing or its architecture does not match OBS. | Install VLC; for 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC, then reopen OBS and configure the source again. |
| The lesson plays once and stops. | Loop Playlist is not enabled. | Open the VLC Video source settings and enable Loop Playlist; test the final-to-first transition. |
| The OBS feed does not appear in YouTube Live Control Room. | The encoder is not connected, or the server URL or stream key is incorrect. | Compare OBS’s connection settings with the current values in YouTube Studio. If the key may have been exposed, reset it and update OBS. |
| Live streaming cannot be enabled. | The channel may not meet eligibility requirements, may have a recent restriction, or may still be in the first-time enablement period. | Check verification and restriction status, then enable streaming in advance; YouTube says first-time enablement may take up to 24 hours. |
| The stream is interrupted or replaced by a placeholder. | YouTube may have detected third-party content, or a connection or encoder failure may have interrupted delivery. | Check Live Control Room notices and stream health. Resolve rights or Content ID allowlisting with the rights owner, and inspect the encoder, power and network. |
| The stream is unstable despite OBS continuing to run. | Available upload capacity may be insufficient or disrupted. | Check the outgoing bitrate and network use; YouTube recommends 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the total bitrate. |
| A 24-hour broadcast does not have one complete automatic archive. | YouTube’s cited automatic-archive guidance covers streams under 12 hours. | Do not rely on that guidance for one complete 24-hour replay. Check current archive limits, plan stream boundaries and verify any local recording. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If keeping OBS, a computer and a home connection running around the clock is not the right fit, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos.
