For a 4K/2160p, 60 fps YouTube Live stream, start with CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval, and YouTube’s codec-specific recommended video bitrate: 50 Mbps for H.264 or 35 Mbps for H.265/HEVC or AV1. YouTube lists lower minimums, but they are not a guarantee of stable streaming; confirm your upload capacity and rehearse with representative movement and audio before going live.
Recommended 4K60 encoder settings
The figures below are YouTube’s published encoder guidance, accessed in 2026. The recommended and minimum bitrates are ingest settings—not a promise that your connection, encoder, or production will remain stable at those rates.
| Setting | Recommended starting point | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Resolution and frame rate | 3840 × 2160 (4K/2160p), 60 fps | YouTube lists encoder frame rates up to 60 fps. |
| Protocol | RTMPS | YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP. |
| Video codec and bitrate | H.264: 50 Mbps recommended; 14 Mbps minimum H.265/HEVC: 35 Mbps recommended; 10 Mbps minimum AV1: 35 Mbps recommended; 10 Mbps minimum |
Use the bitrate range for the codec you actually send. |
| Rate control | CBR | Use constant bitrate. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds | Recommended interval; do not exceed 4 seconds. |
| Pixel aspect ratio and scan | Square pixels; progressive scan | Use progressive video, not interlaced. |
| Frame structure and entropy coding | 2 B-frames; 1 reference frame; CABAC | Set these where your encoder exposes the options. |
| SDR color | Rec. 709, 8-bit | Use these settings for standard dynamic range. |
| HDR color | H.265/HEVC, 10-bit | YouTube’s cited guidance does not support AV1 for HDR. For AV1 at 3840 × 2160 and above, it lists a minimum of two tile columns. |
| Audio codec | AAC or MP3 | 5.1 surround over RTMP/RTMPS is supported only with AAC. |
| Audio: stereo | 44.1 kHz, 128 kbps | Use the stereo values for a stereo mix. |
| Audio: 5.1 surround | 48 kHz, 384 kbps | Requires AAC over RTMP/RTMPS. |

Which codec should you choose?
H.264
Choose H.264 if it is the codec your encoder and workflow support. YouTube’s 4K60 recommendation is 50 Mbps, with a listed minimum of 14 Mbps. The higher recommended bitrate is a platform recommendation, not proof that H.264 will look better than another codec in every setup.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
H.265/HEVC
For SDR, YouTube lists 35 Mbps recommended and 10 Mbps minimum at 4K60. Its HDR guidance specifies H.265/HEVC at 10-bit, making it the listed option here when you are sending HDR.
AV1
YouTube lists the same 4K60 bitrate figures for AV1 as for H.265/HEVC: 35 Mbps recommended and 10 Mbps minimum. The cited guidance does not support AV1 for HDR. At 3840 × 2160 and above, YouTube lists a minimum of two tile columns for AV1.

These settings do not establish a universal image-quality winner: the right choice depends on whether the stream is SDR or HDR and on your encoder’s capabilities. Match the bitrate to the selected codec rather than copying another codec’s value.
Set up the stream and encoder
- Open YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube normally detects incoming resolution and frame rate automatically. If you need to select them manually, create a custom stream key and enable manual settings under Stream Resolution.
- Configure the encoder. In the encoder, set 3840 × 2160 at 60 fps, select the codec, and enter its recommended bitrate from the table. Set rate control to CBR and the keyframe interval to 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Apply the remaining format settings. Use RTMPS, square pixels, progressive scan, 2 B-frames, 1 reference frame, and CABAC where those options are available. Set color according to whether the stream is SDR or HDR, and configure the audio codec and sample rate for your mix.
- Verify the incoming stream. Check the encoder and Live Control Room for the received resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and stream-health messages before relying on the setup for an event.
Check your connection and rehearse
The recommended bitrate is the encoder’s video ingest rate, not a measurement of how much upload capacity your internet service will reliably deliver. Check upload bitrate before the event and choose a quality your connection can sustain. Leave room for normal variation rather than treating a speed-test result as a guarantee.

Rehearse with audio and movement similar to the planned stream, then watch stream health and read any encoder or Live Control Room warnings. YouTube specifically advises testing before starting and including representative movement and audio.
Understand 4K latency
At 4K/2160p, YouTube does not offer the option to improve for low latency. YouTube says these streams are optimized for quality and use normal latency, so do not expect to enable its low-latency improvement setting for a 4K stream.

Troubleshooting common 4K60 problems
- Stream health reports instability or dropped frames: Check whether your sustained upload capacity can support the selected video bitrate, then rehearse again. If necessary, use a quality your connection can reliably sustain.
- The stream arrives at the wrong resolution or frame rate: Confirm the encoder output and the settings in Live Control Room. If manual selection is needed, use a custom stream key and enable manual settings under Stream Resolution.
- The selected bitrate does not match the codec: Verify which codec the encoder is sending and use its corresponding recommendation: 50 Mbps for H.264, 35 Mbps for H.265/HEVC or AV1.
- Keyframes are too far apart: Set a 2-second interval and ensure it does not exceed 4 seconds.
- HDR is not working as expected: For the cited YouTube HDR guidance, use 10-bit H.265/HEVC; AV1 is not supported for HDR. Check that the encoder is configured for HDR rather than SDR.
- Surround audio is unsupported: For 5.1 over RTMP/RTMPS, use AAC. The cited guidance does not support 5.1 with MP3.
- You expected low latency at 4K: The low-latency improvement option is unavailable for 4K/2160p streams; YouTube uses normal latency for this resolution.
Keep a pre-recorded YouTube stream running from the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded video playing as a 24/7 YouTube stream rather than broadcast a live camera or production, StreamNeo can loop uploaded videos from the cloud. Set the encoder correctly for a 4K60 source before upload; the bitrate recommendations above concern YouTube encoder ingest and do not replace checking your own source file and connection.
Or let it run in the cloud
- Upload a recording or build a playlist.
- Add your YouTube stream key once.
- Go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud.
Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. StreamNeo streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube and uploaded videos, not camera broadcasts. Learn about StreamNeo, or start the free first day.

Copyright and YouTube channel rules
Using an encoder setting correctly does not grant rights to the video or music you stream. Use content you own or are authorized to broadcast, and check YouTube’s applicable copyright and monetization rules—particularly before scheduling long-running or repeated streams. A technically healthy stream can still face a copyright claim or other platform action.
For a practical rights review before streaming, use the copyright safety checklist.
