How to Stream Pre-Recorded Videos in 4K 60fps on YouTube Live

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Yes—YouTube Live accepts encoder feeds at 4K (3840 × 2160) and up to 60 fps. To broadcast a prerecorded video, create or schedule an encoder stream in YouTube Studio, connect a compatible encoder using the stream URL and key, and play the video through it. For 4K/60, set the encoder to a supported codec and bitrate, use a two-second keyframe interval and CBR, and rehearse before going live.

What you need for a 4K/60 YouTube Live stream

  • A verified YouTube channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. First-time live-streaming activation can take up to 24 hours. YouTube’s live-streaming setup guide explains eligibility and activation. [c002]
  • An encoder that can play a local video or playlist and output 3840 × 2160 at 60 fps using a codec, bitrate, and protocol YouTube accepts. Software and hardware encoders are both possible; verify a device’s specifications rather than assuming it supports the whole format.
  • A reliable upload connection with enough capacity for the configured stream bitrate plus practical headroom. Run an upload-speed test and rehearse under conditions similar to the actual broadcast.
  • The prerecorded video and its audio ready to play through the encoder. A live encoder feed sends the video as a live event; it does not make the original file a camera broadcast.

YouTube’s encoder settings support H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS, with frame rates up to 60 fps. For the baseline SDR workflow below, YouTube lists Rec. 709 and 8-bit depth. Its encoder settings page is the reference for current ingest requirements. [c001]

Choose an encoder and a workflow

Software encoder on your computer

A software encoder is a flexible DIY option: it can play a local file or playlist and send the output to YouTube. The computer and network connection must remain available for the duration of the broadcast. Confirm that the software can output 3840 × 2160 at 60 fps with the intended codec, bitrate, CBR mode, and keyframe interval before relying on it.

Hardware encoder

A dedicated hardware encoder may suit a production setup, but capabilities vary by model. Before choosing one, confirm support for 4K/60 output, a YouTube-accepted codec, the necessary bitrate, RTMPS if available, and playback of your prerecorded source. No specific model is established here as verified for end-to-end 4K/60 operation.

Cloud service for continuous prerecorded playback

YouTube’s encoder guide names Gyre as a cloud-based service for continuously streaming prerecorded videos and describes Full HD and 4K at 30/60 fps. That is a listing in YouTube’s guide, not an independent test; check the service’s current specifications, limits, availability, and terms before relying on it. YouTube’s encoder guide includes its encoder listings. [c002]

Configure YouTube’s 4K/60 ingest settings

For 4K/60, YouTube publishes the following bitrate settings. These are encoder settings, not a guarantee that a particular encoder or internet connection can sustain the stream without interruption. [c001]

H.264 14 Mbps 50 Mbps

Settings checklist

  • Resolution and frame rate: 3840 × 2160 at 60 fps.
  • Codec and bitrate: choose a codec supported by your encoder and set its bitrate using YouTube’s corresponding 4K/60 row above.
  • Rate control: use constant bitrate (CBR), which YouTube recommends.
  • Keyframes: set a two-second keyframe frequency; do not exceed four seconds.
  • Protocol: use RTMPS where supported. YouTube recommends it as a secure extension to RTMP.
  • Color for SDR: use Rec. 709 and 8-bit depth for the baseline SDR case described in YouTube’s settings.
  • HDR, if applicable: YouTube recommends H.265 over RTMP(S) for HDR and says AV1 is not supported for HDR. Check YouTube’s current HDR requirements before configuring an HDR workflow.

YouTube normally detects the incoming resolution and frame rate. A custom stream key can be configured for manual resolution selection if your workflow requires it. [c001]

Set up, rehearse, and start the stream

  1. Confirm live access: verify the channel and enable live streaming in YouTube Studio if necessary. If this is your first time activating live streaming, allow up to 24 hours. Check YouTube’s eligibility and setup instructions. [c002]
  2. Create or schedule the event: in YouTube Studio, open Go Live and create a stream or select a scheduled stream in Live Control Room. YouTube’s workflow and labels can change, so follow the current Studio prompts. [c003]
  3. Copy the connection details: in Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key into the encoder’s YouTube destination settings. Treat the key like a password: anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to your event. Keep it private and reset it if it is exposed. [c003]
  4. Load the prerecorded content: select the local file or playlist in your encoder and configure it to play through the outgoing live scene or output. Check that both video and audio are included.
  5. Apply the 4K/60 settings: set 3840 × 2160, 60 fps, an accepted codec and its bitrate from the table, CBR, and a two-second keyframe interval. Select RTMPS if the encoder supports it. [c001]
  6. Check connection capacity: run an upload-speed test and ensure the connection has practical headroom above the video bitrate. YouTube advises testing upload speed and choosing a reliable quality; network variation can still interrupt delivery. [c001]
  7. Rehearse with representative material: start the encoder early, play content with audio and movement similar to the real video, check the Live Control Room preview, and review stream-health messages. Verify the watch page and intended archive path as appropriate. [c001][c003]
  8. Start the event: once the preview and stream health look right, begin the scheduled or continuous event using the controls shown in Live Control Room. Keep monitoring stream health while the encoder plays the content.

Understand the 4K latency and archive trade-offs

YouTube does not offer its low-latency option for 4K/2160p. A 4K stream is set to normal latency, so viewers should not expect the same near-real-time interaction as a lower-resolution stream configured for low latency. [c001]

YouTube automatically archives streams at 1440p and 2160p, but says streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured. Keep a local recording or master copy, particularly for long broadcasts, rather than treating the YouTube archive as the only copy. [c004]

Troubleshoot common 4K/60 problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check or do
YouTube does not show the expected 4K/60 preview The encoder is sending a different resolution or frame rate, or YouTube has not detected the intended input. Check the encoder’s output settings and incoming feed. YouTube normally detects resolution and frame rate; if needed, review whether a custom stream key with manual resolution selection is appropriate. [c001]
Stream health reports unstable delivery or the stream drops The upload connection may not sustain the selected bitrate, or network conditions may vary. Run an upload-speed test, reduce competing network traffic, and rehearse at the intended settings. If the connection cannot reliably sustain the recommended bitrate, choose a lower quality that it can carry reliably rather than assuming a nominal internet plan guarantees performance. [c001]
The encoder feed will not connect The stream URL or key may be wrong, the event may not be ready, or the selected protocol may not match the encoder configuration. Recheck the URL and key in Live Control Room and the encoder destination. Confirm that the key belongs to the selected event and use RTMPS if supported. Keep the key private. [c001][c003]
Video looks choppy or quality is poor Output settings, bitrate, source frame rate, encoder load, or network stability may not match the desired 4K/60 feed. Verify the encoder is actually producing 3840 × 2160 at 60 fps, check its codec-specific bitrate and CBR configuration, then repeat a representative rehearsal while watching stream health. [c001]
No audio or incorrect audio The file, playlist, or encoder scene may not route audio to the live output. Check the source file’s audio and the encoder’s audio routing and levels during rehearsal; confirm the Live Control Room preview includes sound before starting the event. [c003]
A long stream has no YouTube archive Streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured by YouTube. Retain a local recording or master file. For a long event, do not rely on the platform archive as the only copy. [c004]

Copyright and the right to stream the video

Using a prerecorded file does not remove the need for permission to broadcast its video, music, or other protected material. Use content you own or are authorized to stream, and check YouTube’s policies before scheduling an event. A successful encoder connection is not evidence that you have the rights to the content. Use the copyright safety checklist as a preparation aid; it does not replace rights clearance or YouTube’s rules.
