YouTube RTMP Bitrate Drops on ACT Fibernet: Encoder and Network Checks

Use encoder checks, upload tests and a Wi-Fi-versus-Ethernet comparison to narrow down why a YouTube stream’s bitrate drops on ACT Fibernet—without assuming the ISP is at fault.

If your YouTube live stream’s bitrate keeps dropping on ACT Fibernet, the ISP name alone does not identify the cause. First check your encoder settings and local source, then compare upload performance on Wi-Fi and Ethernet with other network traffic paused. Those tests help distinguish an encoder or home-network issue from a problem that may need ACT’s investigation.

Check YouTube’s ingest settings first

Make sure your encoder is sending the resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate you intend to use. YouTube’s recommended H.264 ingest bitrates include:

Resolution and frame rate Recommended H.264 bitrate
1080p at 30 fps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 17 Mbps
720p at 30 fps 8 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 8 Mbps

These are YouTube recommendations for H.264, not measurements of ACT performance or guarantees of a stable stream. Other codecs have their own ranges; use the relevant values in YouTube’s current live encoder settings rather than applying H.264 figures to AV1 or H.265/HEVC.

  • Use constant bitrate (CBR) and a 2-second keyframe interval; YouTube allows a maximum interval of 4 seconds.
  • Use RTMPS where your encoder supports it. It is the encrypted variant of RTMP that YouTube recommends.
  • Check that the selected stream key and ingest configuration match the stream you intend to send.

A bitrate target is what the encoder tries to send; it is not the same thing as the result of a speed test. YouTube notes that incorrect settings or insufficient bandwidth for the selected resolution can impair delivery. If the connection cannot sustain the current choice, reducing resolution or frame rate may be a practical test.

Follow this diagnostic sequence

  1. Read the stream-health message. In YouTube Live Control Room, inspect the health indicator and any error details. Compare them with your encoder’s resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate and keyframe interval. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance and live streaming troubleshooting steps explain common setting and delivery problems.
  2. Check the encoder and source locally. Look at the encoder preview for picture or audio problems, check encoder error indicators and observe CPU load during the drop. If available, make a local recording using the same source and settings. A poor preview or recording points toward the source or encoding path; if those look healthy while YouTube reports trouble, investigate the outbound connection next. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance identifies source quality, encoder errors and CPU load as relevant checks.
  3. Measure upload capacity under the conditions that matter. Run an upload test when drops occur, not just when the network is quiet. YouTube advises leaving 20% of upload capacity unused and accounting for other streams and devices sharing the network. Include the stream’s audio and any other active upload or stream in your capacity assessment. As YouTube puts it: “The total bitrate that you’re streaming cannot exceed the amount of upload bandwidth available.” See YouTube’s streaming tips.
  4. Compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet. Connect the streaming computer to the router by Ethernet and repeat the upload test and stream, keeping the encoder settings the same. ACT’s home Wi-Fi guidance identifies wiring, router placement and capability, and the number of connected devices as factors that can affect performance; it describes Cat5e/Cat6 wired connections. A Cat5e or Cat6 cable is useful for this comparison, but it is a diagnostic aid, not a fix for an ISP-side fault.
  5. Repeat after reducing competing traffic. Pause large uploads and downloads, other live streams and avoidable network use. Keep the same encoder settings and note the test time, upload result, connection type and YouTube health messages for each attempt. A single speed-test peak cannot establish that upload is stable throughout a live stream.
  6. Escalate with a record of the evidence. If upload remains unstable over Ethernet with competing traffic paused, contact ACT and provide dates and times, wired upload results, encoder bitrate, YouTube stream-health messages and whether other services are affected. ACT says subscribers can use its website or app to select a connectivity issue and raise a ticket if the problem persists; see its support page and setup and support guidance.

What the comparisons can tell you

  • Wi-Fi fails but Ethernet improves: investigate the wireless segment, router placement and nearby interference, and whether other devices are using the network. This points to a home Wi-Fi issue; it does not establish that every wireless problem has the same cause.
  • Encoder preview or local recording is poor: check the source, encoder errors, CPU load and chosen settings before treating the issue as an ISP problem.
  • Both Wi-Fi and Ethernet struggle, but only during busy household use: shared upload capacity may be a factor. Repeat with competing traffic paused and compare results.
  • Healthy local output but repeated trouble on a quiet wired connection: preserve the test results and stream-health messages for ACT support. This makes an outbound connection investigation reasonable, but does not by itself prove an ACT-side fault.

ACT’s published home-network advice describes possible local factors; it does not establish an ACT-wide routing problem, outage pattern or cause for a particular YouTube bitrate drop. Only repeatable testing and, if needed, provider-side investigation can help diagnose an individual line.

Contact ACT if the wired tests keep failing

ACT’s support page lists consumer phone numbers +91 9945999459, +91 9121212121 and 7288999999, toll-free 1800 1022 836, and [email protected]. It lists phone support hours as 07:30–00:00 daily and a 24/7 chatbot. Contact details and availability can change; confirm them on ACT’s support page before relying on them.
