To keep subtitles visible on a looping YouTube Live replay, turn on CC in the video player, then enable Loop (or Repeat) for the video. Check the captions after the first repeat: YouTube documents captions and looping as separate controls, but does not guarantee that captions stay enabled at every loop boundary on every device. This applies to a replay or other watch-page video, not an ongoing live broadcast.
First, tell a live stream from its replay
A live stream is real-time media. If the channel posts a replay after the broadcast, that replay appears as a video on the channel and can be looped using YouTube’s playback controls. The viewer steps below are for that replay or another recorded video—not for making an active broadcast repeat.

Turn on subtitles and loop the video
On a computer
- Open the replay on YouTube and start playback.
- Select CC in the player if it is available. Use the caption menu to choose a language or adjust appearance when those options are offered.
- Right-click inside the video player and choose Loop.
- After the video returns to the beginning, check that CC is still on. YouTube’s help pages do not promise that the caption state persists through every repeat.
On Android
- Open the replay in the YouTube app and turn on captions using the player’s CC control, if available.
- Open player Settings > Additional settings > Loop video.
- When playback reaches the end and starts again, check the CC state. If it has turned off, enable it again on that device.
On iPhone or iPad
- Use the player’s caption control to turn on CC and select a language when available.
- To repeat the video, look in the player controls or settings for the repeat/loop option. Menu wording and placement can vary; the English-language YouTube help referenced here does not establish one exact current iOS path.
- Check captions after the first repeat.
On a TV or game console
- Use the player controls to turn captions on and choose a language or style if your device offers those options.
- Open the player controls and select Repeat until it indicates that the currently playing video will repeat.
- Check CC after the first repeat. The exact controls can differ by device.
If captions are missing or turn off
- There is no CC control: captions may not be available for that video or in that player. Looping repeats the video; it does not create captions.
- Captions appear before the loop but not after: check CC again at the loop boundary and turn it back on if needed. YouTube does not document a universal setting that forces captions to remain enabled across repeats.
- The language or style is wrong: open the caption menu, if available, and select a supported language or adjust the appearance settings for your device.
- You mean captions on an ongoing broadcast: viewer CC controls are not the same as adding captions to a stream. The creator must send live captions through an embedded caption track or supported caption software.
Captions on a live broadcast versus its replay
For captions on their own live broadcast, a creator has to supply captions; turning on CC as a viewer will not add them to the stream. YouTube documents embedded EIA 608/CEA 708 captions and supported software that sends captions over HTTP. Its live-caption guidance says there is one caption feed per stream entry point and that YouTube currently supports one embedded caption track. The 608/708 standard supports up to four language tracks, but that standard-level capacity does not mean YouTube accepts four embedded tracks for a stream.

They also do not carry over unchanged to the replay: YouTube Help states, “After the live stream ends, live automatic captions won’t remain on the video.” YouTube generates new automatic captions through the VOD process, and those captions may differ from the live captions. If you publish a replay, check its captions separately.
