Read the complete warning in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, then compare the actual encoded width and height being sent with the resolution selected in YouTube’s Ingestion Settings. The warning’s wording matters: if YouTube says the resolution is unsupported, use the expected dimensions shown in the message. There is no single resolution that fixes every stream.
What the resolution mismatch warning means
YouTube checks the incoming stream, not just the prerecorded file you uploaded or the resolution of your encoder’s canvas. Its guidance says the incoming video must have the height and width selected in Ingestion Settings. If the encoder scales or otherwise changes the video, the dimensions YouTube receives can differ from the source file’s dimensions.

YouTube distinguishes between a current resolution that “is not optimal” and one “is not supported for this configuration.” The latter example includes the expected video resolution. Follow the exact message rather than assuming the warning always means the same thing. YouTube’s live streaming error messages also show a timestamp for each error in the Live Dashboard and Live Control Room.

How to diagnose and fix the warning
- Open the active stream in YouTube Studio. In the Live Control Room, find the full resolution warning. Note its timestamp and any expected width and height in the message. YouTube says its dashboard checks for errors in the stream being sent to the platform. Read YouTube’s error-message guidance.
- Check the outgoing encoded dimensions. Inspect the encoder’s actual output width and height. Do not rely only on the source video’s properties, camera resolution, or canvas setting; output scaling can change what is sent.
- Compare the outgoing dimensions with Ingestion Settings. Make the encoder output match the resolution selected in YouTube’s Ingestion Settings, or select an ingest configuration that matches the output, as appropriate for your setup.
- Use YouTube’s expected dimensions when the message says “not supported.” If the warning instead says “not optimal,” treat that as distinct wording; do not label it an unsupported-configuration error.
- Check both feeds if you use primary and backup streams. Compare their resolutions and make the settings match. YouTube identifies different primary and backup resolutions as an issue.
- For a prerecorded playlist, check the files and transitions. Inspect the dimensions and frame rate of each item, especially if the warning returns when playback changes files. In OBS, check Settings > Video and confirm that Base (Canvas) Resolution and Output (Scaled) Resolution produce the intended output. - Check stream health again after changing the relevant setting. Look for a fresh message in Live Control Room. Avoid changing bitrate or audio settings unless YouTube reports a separate problem.
Which resolution should the encoder send?
Use the dimensions selected for your YouTube ingest configuration or, when the warning says the current resolution is unsupported, the expected dimensions in that warning. Do not choose 720p, 1080p, or another familiar target without checking the stream’s actual configuration and YouTube’s message.

The YouTube Live Streaming API reference lists fixed resolution configuration values including 240p, 360p, 480p, 720p, 1080p, 1440p, and 2160p, as well as variable for automatic detection. These are configuration options, not a recommendation for a particular stream. The API specifies that variable resolution and variable frame rate must be selected together.
How to interpret the warning’s severity
YouTube marks errors red when they are critical and may prevent an event from starting or cause viewer problems; yellow errors are moderate and may degrade quality. Color communicates severity, while the message itself identifies the issue to investigate. Use the timestamp to relate a warning to a change in the stream, such as a playlist item switching, if that timing is relevant.
