First clear the rights for every recording and territory you serve, then verify and enable your channel, configure the stream, test it privately, and monitor it after launch. YouTube documents 24/7 live feeds as a use case, but that is not a guarantee of uninterrupted service or automatic recovery.
What a continuous YouTube radio stream actually is
YouTube carries the live audio-and-video feed your encoder sends; it is not a traditional radio playout system or a music-licensing service. Your station supplies the programming, visuals, encoding, internet connection and operational monitoring. YouTube’s Live Streaming API gives a 24/7 feed as an example of a broadcast, including a more advanced case where a second, separate interview broadcast uses the same incoming stream. For a straightforward station, start with one encoder and one continuous broadcast. Google’s API documentation describes that use case, not an uptime commitment.

Clear music rights before you configure the stream
Make a track-by-track inventory of the recordings you plan to play and confirm that your permissions cover streaming them live on YouTube in the territories where viewers may watch. Rights can depend on the repertoire, territory and operating arrangement, so there is no universal permission that makes every reggae recording safe to stream. Keep written documentation and coordinate with the relevant rights holders, labels or distributors.
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match can lead to interruption or termination. Permission alone may not prevent an automated interruption: YouTube says a rights owner may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Ask the rights holder or distributor to confirm the process and that the correct channel is allowlisted. Territorial restrictions alone may not prevent a live interruption. A rights notice in your description does not replace permission or allowlisting. YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams explains these enforcement risks. Prepare your channel and schedule the broadcast
- Check eligibility. YouTube requires a verified channel and no live-stream restrictions during the preceding 90 days. Review the channel’s live-streaming eligibility in YouTube Studio before planning a launch. YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming.
- Enable live streaming early. YouTube for Artists advises enabling live streaming at least 24 hours before your first planned broadcast. Do not leave initial activation until the scheduled launch time. YouTube for Artists.
- Create the stream in YouTube Studio. Open YouTube Studio, choose Create > Go live, and use the Live Control Room to schedule or set up the broadcast. Select the encoder workflow, enter the stream details and copy the current stream key and server information shown there.
- Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password: only enter it into the encoder or service you control, and reset it in YouTube if it is exposed. Confirm that the encoder is using the key for the intended broadcast.
Configure an encoder for reggae programming
An encoder sends your program to YouTube as a live feed. YouTube says encoders are commonly used for concerts and similar productions, and they can support overlays and hardware inputs. Choose one that fits the station’s actual needs: stable operation, audio controls, RTMPS support and a restart process you understand. The cited YouTube guidance does not endorse a particular encoder or guarantee its restart behavior.
Choose the audio and visual feed
Prepare the reggae playlist or continuous program and pair it with a visual that you have permission to use: for example, station artwork, a schedule or an authorized camera feed. For an audio-first station, there is little reason to select a higher video resolution unless the visual plan benefits from it. Check that the audio is neither clipped nor too quiet, and that the visual does not go blank unexpectedly.

Set the connection and encoding options
- Protocol: Use RTMPS when your encoder supports it, as YouTube recommends.
- Video codec: YouTube documents H.264, H.265 and AV1 options. Choose a codec supported by both your encoder and the current YouTube stream settings.
- Audio codec: YouTube documents AAC or MP3. Confirm the selected encoder’s audio output matches the stream configuration.
- Rate control: Use constant bitrate (CBR), as specified in YouTube’s encoder guidance.
- Keyframes: Set a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.
- Quality and bitrate: Select a resolution and bitrate that your internet connection can sustain steadily. The available upload bitrate—not a peak-speed reading—should guide the choice. Avoid raising video quality at the expense of stable audio delivery.
Use the values displayed for your current stream in YouTube Live Control Room and consult YouTube’s encoder settings guidance for the applicable configuration. The reviewed guidance does not establish a minimum computer specification, so test the encoder on the computer you intend to use rather than relying on an assumed hardware requirement.

- Set the broadcast visibility to Unlisted in Live Control Room and start the encoder.
- Confirm that YouTube shows the expected incoming stream and that the feed reaches its live status.
- Listen to a representative stretch of the program. Check volume, distortion, gaps between tracks and any unexpected silence.
- Watch the visual for the same period. Confirm artwork or other visuals display correctly and that overlays are legible.
- Check that the connection remains stable at the chosen quality and bitrate. Include a representative playlist transition; a short test may not reveal later playback or network failures.
- Stop the test and correct any problems before scheduling or starting the public broadcast.
YouTube for Artists’ live-stream guidance recommends testing in advance and checking sound, graphics, stream status and the encoder connection.
Launch and operate the station
- Confirm rights and any required Content ID allowlisting for the channel before making the stream public.
- In Live Control Room, set the intended title, description, visibility and schedule, then start the encoder with the correct stream key.
- Verify that YouTube shows the stream as live and inspect the program from a viewer’s perspective.
- Assign a person to watch the stream status and copyright notices. Keep a practical recovery procedure for encoder, power or internet failures; continuous streaming still needs operational oversight.
If YouTube stops a stream, check YouTube Studio for strikes, as YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance directs. Diagnose whether the cause was a rights match, encoder, computer, power or network issue before restarting. The reviewed guidance does not promise that YouTube or an encoder will automatically restore a dropped broadcast.

Decide separately whether to archive the broadcast
Archiving is a separate choice from sending the live feed. YouTube says Content ID claims on archived live streams are made after the stream completes if you choose to archive it; the live feed itself is scanned while it is ongoing. An archive therefore does not remove the live-stream risk or replace rights clearance. Check the current settings in Live Control Room when deciding whether to keep a recording.

Choose a setup that matches the station’s operation
For one continuous radio-style program, a basic encoder and single broadcast are the simplest arrangement. YouTube’s API also documents an advanced option: keep a 24/7 broadcast running while creating a separate broadcast, such as an interview, from the same incoming stream. That adds API and operational complexity and is useful only if you need a separate event video. The API example describes the pattern; it does not guarantee the setup’s uptime.

Live content is part of YouTube’s viewing mix, but it is not a reach forecast: YouTube for Artists reported that over 30% of daily logged-in YouTube viewers watched live content in Q2 2025. That platform-wide figure says nothing about how many people will find or watch an individual reggae station. YouTube for Artists.
