Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf audio disappears after FFmpeg reconnects, first identify whether FFmpeg is reading a playlist or sending a stream to YouTube Live. A reconnect restores a connection; it does not guarantee that audio packets, stream mapping, or timestamps are valid. The right fix depends on the direction, protocol, FFmpeg options, and the error logged at the time of the reconnect.
First identify which stream is losing audio
“YouTube playlist stream” can describe different workflows, and they do not share one fix:

- FFmpeg pulls a playlist: FFmpeg reads an HLS or other playlist as its input. Investigate the source playlist, audio rendition, input format, and timestamp handling.
- FFmpeg pushes to YouTube Live: FFmpeg encodes or forwards audio and video to YouTube. Check FFmpeg’s output mapping and codecs, then compare its logs with YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health messages.
- YouTube HLS ingestion: FFmpeg sends HLS segments to YouTube using that specific ingest method. YouTube’s HLS playlist and segment requirements apply here—not to every workflow that happens to read an HLS playlist.
Record the installed FFmpeg version and the input and output protocols before changing options. Keep a copy of the command, but remove stream keys, passwords, and other credentials before sharing it.
Capture the evidence around the reconnect
Compare the log lines immediately before and after the connection drops and returns. The aim is to determine whether the failure is a connection problem, a timestamp discontinuity, or missing audio—not to treat every warning as the same fault.

- Look for timestamp messages such as non-monotonous DTS, backward DTS, or a discontinuity. Note whether they occur at the reconnect and whether they name the audio or video stream.
- Check whether audio packets continue after reconnecting, and whether the number or identity of mapped audio streams changes.
- Preserve the exact options affecting input, output, stream mapping, codecs, timestamp handling, and reconnect behavior.
- If sending to YouTube, note the time of the FFmpeg message and compare it with the timestamped messages in YouTube Live Control Room’s Health Indicator.
FFmpeg’s protocol reconnect options cover connection recovery for specified disconnections and errors, with retry and delay controls. They do not, by themselves, correct timestamps or establish that audio resumed. See the FFmpeg Protocols documentation for the options supported by the protocol in use.
Fix timestamp discontinuities only when they fit the input
For input formats that accept timestamp discontinuities, including MPEG-TS and HLS, FFmpeg documents -dts_delta_threshold. When an absolute discontinuity exceeds the threshold, FFmpeg adjusts the current DTS and PTS by the corresponding delta. The documented default is 10 seconds. This is a conditional correction—not a general audio-repair switch. Consult the FFmpeg command-line documentation and confirm the actual input format and options before using it.

Check whether -copyts changes the behavior
FFmpeg normally disables this discontinuity correction when -copyts is used, except when it detects timestamp wrapping. If the command includes -copyts, do not assume that adjusting -dts_delta_threshold will have the expected effect. Review the complete command and the relevant documentation before changing timestamp-preservation behavior; changing it may affect output timing as well as the warning.

A timestamp warning does not prove that it caused the missing audio. After any change, check whether audio packets are present after reconnect and listen to the output. Make one cause-related change at a time so you can tell what changed the result.

- PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
- WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
- TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
- FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
- SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
If FFmpeg is sending a stream to YouTube Live
Open YouTube Live Control Room and inspect the Health Indicator messages at the same time as the reconnect in the FFmpeg log. YouTube’s live-streaming error guide identifies issues including missing audio, multiple audio streams, unsupported codecs, and other ingest-format errors. It states, “The ingestion stream contains no audio stream,” and warns that “Multiple audio streams will cause ingestion problems.” Use the specific health message to direct the investigation:
- No audio stream: Check the FFmpeg input for audio and verify that the output maps the intended audio stream. Compare mapping and packet activity before and after reconnect.
- Multiple audio streams: Inspect the input and output mappings for more than one audio stream reaching ingest. Do not guess which track to remove; identify the intended track first.
- Unsupported codec or format: Check the actual output codec and container against the format YouTube reports. The cited guide describes a stream format requiring H.264 video and AAC audio; do not treat that requirement as universal to every ingest protocol or setup.
- Timestamp warning without a matching YouTube health error: Use the FFmpeg logs and timestamp options to investigate the discontinuity. A warning alone does not identify YouTube as the cause.
If the workflow uses YouTube HLS ingestion
Apply YouTube’s HLS setup requirements only when FFmpeg is sending HLS to YouTube. The YouTube HLS setup guide specifies TS segments, HTTPS POST/PUT requests, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and segment durations of 1–4 seconds. It also gives audio guidance of 128 Kbps for stereo and 384 Kbps for 5.1 surround sound. These are settings for the described HLS ingest workflow, not proof that a timestamp discontinuity caused the lost audio.

YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency than RTMP because HLS sends segments rather than one continuous stream. If you are reading an HLS playlist as an FFmpeg input rather than sending HLS to YouTube, check the source and FFmpeg input behavior instead of applying YouTube’s ingest rules.

Verify the fix and isolate what changed
- Save the original command and logs, with secrets removed from any copy you share.
- Confirm the direction of the stream, protocol, container, FFmpeg version, and the audio stream mapping.
- Make one change that corresponds to a specific log or YouTube health message. Avoid changing reconnect, timestamp, mapping, and codec settings simultaneously.
- Reconnect or reproduce the failure, then compare the logs before and after. Confirm that audio packets continue and that the audible output returns.
- If the problem remains, preserve the new logs and compare the exact timestamps with YouTube’s Health Indicator if the stream is outbound.
Common symptoms and next checks
| Symptom | What to check next |
|---|---|
| FFmpeg reconnects, but audio stays silent | Check whether audio packets resume and whether the audio mapping changed. Reconnect success alone does not establish that audio returned. |
| Non-monotonous or backward DTS appears near reconnect | Identify the input format and inspect timestamp options, especially whether -copyts is present. Consider the documented discontinuity handling only if the input format supports it. |
| YouTube reports no audio | Check input audio availability and output mapping against the timestamped Health Indicator message. |
| YouTube reports multiple audio streams or an ingest format error | Inspect the mapped stream count and actual output codecs; compare them with the specific YouTube error. |
| HLS ingest is rejected or behaves unexpectedly | Verify that this is outbound HLS ingestion and check TS segments, rolling playlist limits, request method, segment duration, and audio settings against YouTube’s HLS guide. |
