Neither Azure nor Google Cloud is a universal winner for an always-on YouTube stream. Google Cloud has a specific pricing advantage: its network pricing page lists VM-to-YouTube data transfer as no-charge. That does not make the VM, disk, or other resources free. Azure’s total depends on the VM, operating system, runtime, storage, and bandwidth. Compare complete, like-for-like configurations—not a single hourly price.
What matters most for a 24/7 stream
A cloud VM runs your encoder and sends its output to YouTube, but the provider’s published network limit is not a guarantee of sustained encoder throughput or a stable stream. Google says maximum possible egress depends on the machine type and destination route; Microsoft counts traffic leaving an Azure VM toward its allocated limit across destinations. Treat those figures as ceilings, then validate your actual software, configuration, and YouTube ingest destination.

- Destination-specific transfer pricing: Google documents a no-charge category for VM-to-YouTube transfer. Do not extend that rule to other destinations or all Google Cloud traffic.
- Compute and OS: A VM intended to run continuously accrues costs based on its selected size, operating system, and runtime.
- Storage and supporting resources: Include disks and other deployed resources. Azure notes that a retained OS disk may continue to cost money while a VM is stopped.
- Region and network tier: These affect pricing and should match your intended deployment.

| Consideration | Azure VM | Google Cloud VM |

| Traffic sent to YouTube | Estimate bandwidth charges for the selected configuration and destination; no equivalent Azure-to-YouTube no-charge rule is established here. | Google’s network pricing page lists VM-to-YouTube data transfer in a no-charge category. This applies to that specific transfer category, not compute or every kind of traffic. |
| Network capacity | Allocated outbound throughput is a VM-level limit shared across network traffic leaving the VM; it does not promise a particular stream bitrate. | Maximum possible egress depends on machine type and destination route; it does not promise a particular stream bitrate. |
| Compute and operating system | Estimate using the chosen VM size, OS, and intended runtime. | Estimate using the chosen VM configuration, region or zone, and intended runtime. |

How to make a fair cost comparison
- Define the stream: Record resolution, frame rate, encoder, target bitrate, and YouTube ingest destination. Decide whether the VM must run all month or only for a defined schedule.
- Select comparable VM configurations: Choose a region and an OS, then select VM sizes suitable for the encoder workload. The available information does not establish a tested minimum size for an unspecified encoder; do not assume a GPU is required.
- Estimate every resource: Use each provider’s current pricing calculator for compute hours, OS licensing where applicable, disks, IP or other network resources, and outbound transfer. Match region, runtime, and assumptions.
- Apply destination-specific network pricing: For Google Cloud, account for the documented VM-to-YouTube transfer category while still including VM and disk costs. For other destinations or traffic types, check the applicable tier and region rather than assuming the same treatment.
- Test before relying on the deployment: Run the actual encoder and stream configuration to the intended YouTube ingest destination. Provider network ceilings alone do not establish that a particular stream will remain stable.
Google says inbound transfer is free under the described network tiers, while outbound transfer is priced per GiB and varies by tier and destination. A single universal egress price is therefore not useful without those details. Google also notes regional and zonal pricing variation. Microsoft’s VM estimate depends on OS and size and identifies runtime, storage, and bandwidth as cost components.

Which provider should you choose?
- Consider Google Cloud first if your stream goes from a Compute Engine VM to YouTube and the documented no-charge transfer category materially affects your estimate. You still need to compare the VM, OS, storage, and supporting-resource costs.
- Choose based on your existing setup if your team already operates in Azure or Google Cloud. Familiarity, account constraints, region availability, and the exact VM configuration can matter more than a single network-pricing difference.
- Do not declare a price winner yet if you have not matched region, VM size, OS, runtime, disks, and transfer destination. Official pricing material does not establish one apples-to-apples monthly bill for an unspecified stream.
No provider-level maximum network figure proves uninterrupted streaming or a particular encoder bitrate. Reliability must be checked with the actual workload and ingest path.
Troubleshooting an always-on VM stream
- The stream will not start: Check that the encoder is configured for the intended YouTube ingest destination and the correct stream key, and review the encoder’s output and connection status.
- Bitrate or stream stability is inconsistent: Confirm the encoder workload and VM configuration, then test the route and stream to YouTube. A published VM egress ceiling is not a throughput guarantee.
- The bill is higher than expected: Recheck runtime, VM size, OS, disks, IP and other network resources, region, transfer destination, and network tier in the calculators. On Azure, stopping a VM does not necessarily stop charges for a retained OS disk.
- Google Cloud transfer charges appear: Verify that the traffic matches the specific VM-to-YouTube category and check the current pricing rules for other destinations or traffic types; the no-charge category is not a blanket exemption.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a 24/7 YouTube stream from uploaded videos rather than maintaining an encoder VM, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; one free day is available per account. Monthly is $9.99 per month.
