To fix most YouTube glitches, first check whether the problem is limited to one video, one device, or your whole network. Then try another video or connection, reduce playback quality if it is buffering, and update or restart the app, browser, or device. The right fix depends on the symptom: a green picture with sound needs different troubleshooting from a loading error.
First, find out how widespread the glitch is
Before changing settings, note the exact error message and check whether the problem affects one video or several. Try another video, then—if available—try YouTube on a different supported device. This helps distinguish a video-specific problem from one tied to an app, browser, device, or network.

- One video only: Try other videos. If they play normally, the issue may be limited to that video.
- One app or browser: Try another supported browser or YouTube on another device to see whether playback works there.
- Several devices on the same network: Test a different internet connection. If YouTube and other streaming services have trouble across the device, consult the device manufacturer’s support resources.
YouTube’s TeamYouTube community post used the familiar question, “My video keeps freezing or not loading. What can I do?” in 2018. Its wording remains recognizable, but use current YouTube Help instructions for device-specific steps.
Fix buffering, lag, or videos that will not load
Test the connection and available speed
Switch to another connection and retry the video. On a phone or tablet, compare Wi-Fi with mobile data; mobile data use may incur charges. If playback improves on the alternate connection, that points toward the original network path rather than proving the cause.

Run a speed test and compare the result with YouTube’s approximate recommended sustained speeds for different resolutions. These figures are guidance, not guarantees; the speed available to YouTube can vary when other devices are using the network.
| Playback resolution | Approximate recommended sustained speed |
|---|---|
| 4K | 20 Mbps |
| 1080p | 5 Mbps |
| 720p | 2.5 Mbps |
| 480p | 1.1 Mbps |
| 360p | 0.7 Mbps |
These approximate recommendations are from YouTube Help’s video-error guidance, retrieved October 7, 2026. A speed test is a snapshot, so a result above a listed figure does not guarantee uninterrupted playback. See YouTube’s video-error troubleshooting guidance.

- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
Lower the playback quality
Choose a lower resolution in the video’s quality settings and see whether playback becomes more stable. This is a useful diagnostic as well as a workaround: if lower quality plays smoothly, the connection may not be sustaining the selected resolution consistently.

When a television is buffering, check the connection near the set rather than assuming the speed elsewhere in the home is the same. Distance from the router, obstructions, interference, and other devices using the network can affect the connection available to the TV. YouTube’s streaming and video troubleshooting guidance recommends checking connection speed and adjusting quality manually.

- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
Consider a wired connection
YouTube says a hardwired internet connection instead of Wi-Fi may help. Treat Ethernet as an optional test, not a guaranteed fix: the router and playback device need compatible ports or adapters. A cable will not address an extension conflict, outdated app, graphics problem, account restriction, video-specific fault, or service interruption. See YouTube’s system requirements and supported devices.
Fix browser errors, freezing, or loading problems
- Restart the browser and device. Close the browser, reopen it, and restart the device if playback still fails. Close surplus tabs and install available browser updates. YouTube supports multiple browsers; Chrome is not the only option.
- Clear browser cache and cookies. This can help with browser-related loading problems. You may need to sign in again to websites afterward.
- Test a private or incognito window. Try YouTube in a private window with extensions disabled. If playback works, re-enable extensions one at a time to look for a conflict. YouTube notes that ad-blocking extensions may affect playback, but a successful private-window test does not establish that a particular extension is responsible.
- Update YouTube and device software on mobile. Install available app and operating-system updates, then restart the app and device. Clear the YouTube app cache if your operating system offers that option.

Fix playback trouble on a TV or streaming device
- Check connection speed near the TV or streaming device.
- Open the video’s quality settings and choose a lower resolution to test playback.
- Quit and reopen the YouTube app.
- If relevant, sign out of YouTube and sign back in.
- Restart the TV or streaming device, then install available app and system updates.
- If possible, compare playback on another device or by another method, such as casting or connecting a computer over HDMI.
If YouTube works on another device using the same network, focus next on the TV or streaming device. If it fails across devices on that network, test another connection. YouTube’s streaming troubleshooting guidance includes reopening the app, restarting the device, and checking for software updates.

Fix a green video player when audio still plays
A green picture with sound is a specific visual symptom; do not assume these steps apply to every black-screen problem. YouTube recommends trying another browser. If the issue occurs in Chrome, turn off Use hardware acceleration when available in Chrome settings, then restart the browser and test playback. YouTube also recommends updating the computer’s graphics driver. For another browser, follow that browser’s own help instructions. See YouTube’s green-screen troubleshooting steps.
