To get YouTube on a smart TV, open the TV’s app store or Apps screen, search for YouTube, then install or add it. If it is already installed, open it. The exact menu depends on the TV’s platform and model.
Here, “download YouTube” means installing the app so you can stream on the TV. It does not mean saving video files to the TV for offline viewing.

Install YouTube using your TV’s app store
YouTube says its app is already available on most smart TVs, game consoles, and streaming devices. Start by searching the apps already on your TV before considering another device. YouTube Help’s installation instructions give these platform-specific routes:

- Android TV or Google TV: Open Google Play Store on the TV, search for “YouTube,” and download the app.
- LG TV: Press Home on the remote, open LG Content Store, search for YouTube, download it, and, if you want, add it to the home screen.
- Samsung TV: Press Home, open Apps, find YouTube among the recommended apps, and add its shortcut to the home screen. Menu labels can vary by model.
- Roku: Open Streaming Store or Streaming Channels, search for YouTube, and download it. Roku may display a “Channel added” confirmation.
- Fire TV: Search for YouTube from the home screen or find it in the app store, then download it.
- Apple TV: Search for YouTube in the App Store and download it.
- Chromecast with Google TV: Open the Apps tab, search for YouTube, and download it.
Availability and labels can vary with the TV model, region, and software version. If YouTube is installed already, open it rather than installing it again.

What to do if YouTube is missing
- Check that the TV is connected to the internet.
- Search the TV’s app store or Apps screen for YouTube.
- If the app is not offered, check whether the TV model and its software still support it. App availability depends on model, region, and software version.
- If the TV cannot run the app, consider a compatible streaming device. Check that it works with your television before buying one; an extra device is unnecessary when the TV already has YouTube.
You can also cast YouTube from a phone, tablet, or computer to a smart TV or streaming device. YouTube’s casting instructions cover both casting and linking a phone or tablet to a TV.
Cast YouTube from a phone or tablet
When both devices use the same Wi-Fi
- Connect the phone or tablet and the TV or streaming device to the same Wi-Fi network.
- Open the YouTube app on the phone or tablet and tap Cast.
- Select the TV or streaming device from the available targets.
When the devices are not on the same Wi-Fi
- Open YouTube on the TV and go to Settings.
- Select Add a device to display a TV code.
- Enter that code in the YouTube app on your phone or tablet.
The TV-code option is for phones and tablets; YouTube does not offer this method for computers.

Installing the app is not downloading videos for offline viewing
Installing YouTube on a TV lets you stream videos there. It does not save video files to the television. YouTube’s offline-viewing help describes downloads of certain videos in the YouTube mobile app in select areas. Availability depends on region and account eligibility. Downloaded videos are encrypted and can be watched only in the YouTube app; the documented feature does not describe downloading videos onto a smart TV.

If your goal is watching offline, check whether mobile downloads are available to you in the YouTube app. For watching on the TV, install the app if supported or cast from another device.
