YouTube Music is rolling out a new audio experience called Consistent volume across Android and iOS. If you’ve ever switched from a quiet track to a loud one and felt your volume jump, this feature is designed to smooth out those swings.
This guide covers what it does, exactly where to find the setting on Android and iPhone/iPad, and what to do when it’s missing or doesn’t seem to change anything.

What YouTube Music Consistent volume is
Consistent volume is a playback setting that aims to reduce sudden volume differences between songs and mixes. Instead of you compensating manually—turning your volume up for one track, down for the next—the app tries to normalize perceived loudness during playback.
Think of it as dynamic level control at the app level. You’re still in control of your overall loudness, but the feature works to make the loudness of individual tracks feel more even.

Why the feature matters (and what it can’t fix)
Volume inconsistency is usually caused by differences in how tracks are mastered—some are recorded hotter, some leave more headroom. Even when both tracks are streamed correctly, your ears (and your speakers) can interpret the change as a big volume step.
What Consistent volume can help with:
- Large jumps between tracks in playlists and radio mixes
- “Quiet intro, loud chorus” tracks that feel extreme
- Unpredictable loudness across artists
What it can’t fully fix:
- Tracks that are inherently very quiet or very compressed (the normalization has limits)
- Volume behavior coming from your device or Bluetooth codec settings
- Cases where your streaming quality or connection is unstable (buffering can affect perceived loudness)
Where Consistent volume lives in the app
On both Android and iOS, this setting is typically found in the app’s playback or audio settings area. The rollout also means you may not see the toggle right away even if you’re on a recent YouTube Music build.
Common navigation pattern (wording can vary slightly): Profile → Settings → Music playback (or Playback & performance) → Consistent volume.

Use the steps below to turn it on once the rollout hits your account and app version.
- Open YouTube Music.
- Tap your profile picture (top-right).
- Select Settings.
- Go to Music playback (or a similarly named playback category).
- Find Consistent volume.
- Turn the toggle On.
- Start playback of a playlist and compare the first few track transitions to confirm it feels smoother.
If you don’t see the toggle, jump to the troubleshooting section and verify app version, region/rollout eligibility, and whether other audio options override the perceived behavior.

When Consistent volume is working, you should notice two changes:
- Smaller transitions between tracks in playlists, mixes, and radio-style sessions
- Less “peakiness” when moving from quiet intros to louder hooks
How it feels can vary by track type. Highly dynamic recordings may still sound different, but the most jarring “volume step changes” are typically reduced.
Troubleshooting when Consistent volume is missing or not working
If you can’t find the toggle, or the volume still feels uneven, use this checklist. Work through it in order—each step is quick and helps pinpoint the cause.
1) Confirm you’re on the latest YouTube Music version
Rollouts are tied to app builds. Update YouTube Music from the Google Play Store (Android) or App Store (iOS), then reopen the app.
- On Android: update via Play Store → open YouTube Music → re-check Settings.
- On iOS: update via App Store → restart the app → re-check Settings.
2) Check whether the feature is enabled for your account
Even on the latest build, staged rollouts can delay availability. Try again later (for example, after 24–48 hours) or on another network connection.

If you have multiple devices logged into the same account, check both. You’ll often see the toggle appear on one device first.
3) Look for an audio-category setting mismatch
Sometimes the toggle lives under a slightly different label depending on app version. Search visually around playback settings for terms like:
- Audio quality
- Playback behavior
- Normalization
- Sound settings
4) Restart playback (and the app)
A setting change should apply immediately, but it doesn’t always “snap in” mid-track. Do this:
- Close the YouTube Music app completely.
- Reopen it.
- Start a fresh track or playlist queue.
5) Rule out system or Bluetooth volume behaviors
Bluetooth setups can make volume changes feel inconsistent even when the music stream is normalized. Test with two scenarios:
- Wired headphones or device speakers (if available)
- Bluetooth with the same track list
If the problem mostly disappears on wired audio, the issue may be Bluetooth volume or codec-level behavior rather than Consistent volume itself.
6) Try disabling other sound controls
If you use equalizers or loudness boosts in system accessibility settings (or within headphone companion apps), those can counteract perceived normalization.

Common gotchas: headphones, Bluetooth, and device volume behavior
Consistent volume is one layer. Your device and accessories can still produce big perceived jumps.
Bluetooth volume and “maximum volume” mismatch
Many Bluetooth stacks handle volume control differently than wired audio. Depending on the headset, your phone may report volume differently, and you may see louder-than-expected transitions even when the app is normalizing track levels.
What to try:
- Set your phone volume to a consistent level (don’t adjust mid-queue)
- Set the headset volume to a mid-to-high level once, then avoid re-tweaking
- Test with a fresh playlist to prevent carryover from previous playback
Headphone EQ apps (or OS equalizers)
Equalizers can increase bass or treble and change perceived loudness. If you’re using an EQ profile that boosts certain frequency ranges heavily, two tracks can still feel very different.
Quiet device environments
In a loud room, your ears interpret quiet material as “too low,” even with normalization. If you’re comparing across environments, you may confuse environment effects with app behavior.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsComparing Consistent volume to other loudness controls
People often ask how this differs from “normalization” features found elsewhere (like platform-wide loudness leveling or player EQ). The short version: Consistent volume is specifically about smoothing perceived loudness in YouTube Music playback.

| Device volume | Your OS and hardware | Overall loudness changes uniformly |
| Equalizer (EQ) | Frequency shaping | More character, sometimes different perceived loudness |
| Bluetooth/headset controls | Accessory-specific processing | Volume steps can still happen even if app normalizes |
Best practices for consistent playback
If you want the smoothest experience after the rollout, use a repeatable test setup.
- Pick a playlist with at least 10 tracks from different eras or artists.
- Set your phone volume to the same level every time (don’t adjust during the test).
- Turn Consistent volume On and compare track-to-track transitions for 2–3 changes.
- Then turn it Off and compare again using the same playlist from the start.
This approach isolates the feature from random manual volume changes.
FAQs about YouTube Music Consistent volume
Why don’t I see Consistent volume in YouTube Music?
The rollout is staged. Make sure YouTube Music is updated, then re-check Settings after a day or two. If you’re on the latest build and it still doesn’t show, the feature may not be enabled for your account yet.

Is Consistent volume available on both Android and iOS?
Yes—YouTube Music is rolling it out across Android and iOS. Availability depends on your app version and rollout eligibility rather than your device type alone.
Will Consistent volume reduce bass or change audio quality?
It shouldn’t “remove” audio. However, because it changes how loudness is leveled, you may perceive differences in punch or overall intensity—especially on tracks mastered very quietly or very loudly.
Does Consistent volume work with downloaded songs?
In most cases, audio normalization settings apply to playback regardless of whether content is streamed or stored locally. If you test and see no difference, try a fresh playback start and verify you’re toggling the correct setting category.
My volume still jumps a lot. What should I do first?
Test with wired headphones or device speakers to rule out Bluetooth volume behavior. Then disable any EQ or loudness enhancements and re-test using the same playlist.
Bottom Line
YouTube Music Consistent volume is meant to make listening feel steadier by reducing track-to-track loudness swings. Once the toggle appears on your Android or iPhone/iPad, turning it on is usually the fastest way to test whether it improves your playlist experience.
If you don’t see the setting or the effect seems muted, focus on the usual culprits: staged rollout timing, app updates, and Bluetooth/EQ interactions. With the right test playlist and stable device volume, it’s easy to tell whether the feature is working on your setup.
