These six features are easy to overlook—and several work without a paid music plan.
1. Swipe through music in Samples
Samples is a personalized feed of short music-video segments. Swipe to preview something new, then save the song, share it, open the full video, or explore related videos. Like a Sample and the full song is automatically added to Liked Music.

It is a handy discovery option when you want to browse by sound and video rather than enter an artist or track name. YouTube lists Samples among the features available with its ad-supported service, though experiences can vary by region and account.

2. Build a radio around a mood or mix of artists
YouTube’s October 2023 feature guide describes a way to create a radio station by choosing artists and adjusting the mix. The documented controls let listeners tune discovery versus familiarity, set a mood, and lean toward popular records or deep cuts.

3. Translate lyrics without leaving the song
When lyrics are available for a song in a language different from your device language, YouTube Music may offer a translation in the Lyrics view. Open the song, choose Lyrics, then tap Translate. The option is not a promise that lyrics—or translations—exist for every track.

Liking songs helps shape recommendations, and YouTube says suggestions may also reflect content you watched or liked and artists you follow across YouTube and YouTube Music. Disliking a track gives another signal about what you do not want in the mix. This can make a feed more useful over time, but shared account history across YouTube services may influence what appears.

If recommendations reflect activity you do not want influencing them, YouTube Music Help documents options to pause or delete search and watch history. Those controls are useful when you want to manage the history signals associated with your account.
5. Find things in a more flexible library
The Library is not limited to a single undifferentiated list. YouTube Music documents filters for playlists, podcasts, songs, albums, and artists, as well as ways to switch between your library, downloads, uploads, and files on your device. You can also sort by recent activity, recently saved, or recently played.

These controls help when you remember saving or playing something recently but not its exact title. The library options are documented in YouTube Music Help; the available content and view can depend on what you have added or downloaded.
6. Know what the free and paid tiers actually include
You do not need a paid music plan to use every discovery feature: YouTube lists Samples and Music Tuner among the benefits of its ad-supported service. But YouTube Music Premium is the relevant membership for music downloads and background music play, as well as music without ads and audio-only music playback. Do not assume those music benefits are included in the free tier.

YouTube also describes ad-supported access to on-demand songs, music videos, and podcasts; most podcasts can be played audio-only, in the background, or downloaded. New features announced, not guaranteed everywhere yet
In a September 23, 2026 post, YouTube Music Senior Director of Product Management T. Jay Fowler announced Ask Music queue customization and artist-lore exploration, along with a personalized weekly podcast audio guide. The post described the updates as “coming soon” to YouTube Music and Premium subscribers worldwide; that is an announcement, not confirmation that they are available to every account today. Check the app for current availability.
The same post attributes two scale figures to YouTube: 450 million new-to-them artist discoveries in July 2026 and a catalog of more than 300 million songs in 2026. YouTube provides no methodology in the cited passage, so treat them as company-reported figures, not independent measurements. Read the announcement.
