Secure a networked physical access-control system by treating its controllers, management services, administrator accounts, credentials, network connections, and logs as one security-relevant operational technology (OT) environment. The practical demands are clear: strong authentication, secure defaults, restricted communications, useful logs, controlled configuration changes, and a supported way to handle vulnerabilities and updates. Current guidance calls for these protections, but the sources cited here do not establish a rise in access-controller attack counts.
Why access controllers need cybersecurity controls
A connected access-control installation can include door controllers, readers, credentials, central or cloud management, administrator accounts, logs, and network services. The components and the paths used to manage them belong in the same asset inventory and security review. Architectures and risks vary by product and site, so controls should be adapted to the system rather than assumed to be identical everywhere. Joint OT product-selection guidance and a 2025 Security Industry Association report provide relevant procurement and operating principles for this environment (Secure by Demand; SIA Operational Security Technology report).

NIST’s 2017 publication on access-control policies and models puts the stakes succinctly: “Access control systems are among the most critical of computer security components.” It addresses policy models and their verification, not physical-controller hardware, but the principle applies: an incorrect rule, misconfiguration, or implementation flaw can make the system enforce something other than the organization’s intended access policy (NIST SP 800-192).

What to ask vendors before buying or renewing
Use the joint Secure by Demand guidance as a general OT procurement checklist, not as an access-controller certification or proof that any particular product has been tested. Ask vendors for product-specific evidence, lifecycle details, and a clear account of the work that remains the operator’s responsibility.

| Area | Questions for the vendor |
|---|---|
| Secure defaults and authentication | Are default credentials eliminated or required to be changed? Can unnecessary interfaces be disabled? What authentication methods are available for administrators and service personnel? Which legacy protocols, if any, remain necessary? |
| Communications and data protection | How are peers authenticated, and how are configuration, credentials, logs, and operational data protected in transit and at rest? |
| Logging | Does the baseline product record authentication events, privilege changes, policy and configuration edits, security events, and relevant faults? Can authorized operators export the records to central monitoring? |
| Configuration and recovery | Can operators track authorized changes, back up configurations, restore them, and detect unauthorized modification? What recovery steps and tools are documented? |
| Vulnerabilities and upgrades | Where are advisories published? How can vulnerabilities be reported? What update tools are provided, how long is the product supported, and what is the process for upgrading and recovering if an update fails? |
| Ownership and interoperability | Can the operator maintain, configure, and migrate the system without avoidable dependence on one vendor? Which open standards and export options are supported? |
| Resilience and essential functions | How does the system maintain essential functions, and how is service restored after a component or account is compromised? What site-specific safety and operational decisions must the customer make? |
A broad “secure by design” claim is not a substitute for answers. Request documentation and evidence for the specific model, software or firmware version, support period, configuration options, and maintenance arrangement under consideration.
How to harden an installed system
Coordinate facilities, physical security, IT, OT, and vendor teams. Apply the following controls in a planned sequence, using the product’s safe-configuration instructions where changes could affect operations.

- Control 4 doors, get in the door by swiping card or key fob, get out door by push to exit button. Can store/download/check history entry records and generate report by professional management software.
- Control of memory up to 20,000 user / up to 100,000 logs. Auto open/close at any pre-set time during any day. Support "who" can enter which door at certain time, authorized access control.
- The FRID reader is waterproof, 5-10cm read range. The electric magnetic lock is with 600lbs holding force. Control board is TCP/IP based communication, provide professional designed power cabinet box.
- Have smart phone APP( iOS & Android) to open door remotely. Desktop USB reader, read card number into software so that easy programming/register user. Detail video guide and wire diagram make all easily, you can DIY.
- Network communication via TCP/IP. Software Supportable Database: Access & SQL Server. Support Win7/Win8/Win10/Win11 both 32 & 64 bit ALL Windows system.
- Inventory the system. Record controllers, management servers or services, interfaces, network dependencies, software and firmware versions, responsible vendors, enabled remote-access routes, and an accountable owner for each asset. CISA’s ICS Recommended Practices collection includes resources of varying dates and scopes; use the material that fits the system and site.
- Limit network paths. Permit only the sources, destinations, and services the system needs. Where the architecture allows, place management interfaces on a controlled management network and segment access-control equipment from general IT according to site risk. Remove unnecessary external exposure and remote-access routes. For vendor maintenance that remains necessary, require authorized and monitored access and keep a record of enabled paths. SIA explicitly recommends segmentation for operational security technology; CISA’s communications-infrastructure guidance supports separated management and strict access controls as broader practices, not controller-specific instructions (SIA report; CISA hardening guidance).
- Protect administrative access. Use unique accounts, least privilege, and strong authentication. Enable phishing-resistant multifactor authentication (MFA) for sensitive administrative access when supported. CISA names hardware-based PKI and FIDO authentication as examples; verify compatibility with both the identity provider and the controller-management system before selecting an authentication method (CISA hardening guidance).
- Remove unsafe defaults carefully. Change default credentials, prevent their reuse, and disable unused services or insecure legacy protocols where the product supports it. Check vendor instructions before changing settings that could affect operation.
- Manage vulnerabilities and updates. Monitor vendor advisories, assess whether reported vulnerabilities apply, and prioritize supported software and firmware updates. Test changes where operationally feasible, keep a rollback or recovery plan, and record versions and approvals. The cited sources support planned updates and vulnerability management, but do not prescribe a universal patch interval for controllers (Secure by Demand; SIA report).
- Enable and protect logs. Collect records for authentication, privilege changes, policy and configuration changes, security events, and relevant system faults. Decide who reviews them, how they reach central monitoring, and how long they are retained based on applicable requirements (Secure by Demand; SIA report).
- Review access and verify enforcement. Periodically review policies, accounts, roles, cards or mobile credentials, and processes for revoking access when people leave or change roles. Test whether the system’s actual behavior matches the written rules. NIST SP 800-192 explains why access-control policies and their implementation need systematic verification and validation (NIST SP 800-192).
- Plan incident response and recovery. Agree how facilities, security, IT, OT, and the vendor will respond; preserve configurations and logs; identify safe isolation steps; and document how doors, egress, life safety, and manual operation are handled under approved site procedures. Do not select a fail-secure or fail-safe behavior without considering the site’s life-safety requirements and applicable codes.
How to compare products and deployment approaches
There is no universal winner established by the sources cited here. Compare the actual product, its management architecture, and the operating arrangement on these criteria; request evidence for the versions and deployment options being evaluated.
- Authentication choices for administrators and service personnel, including support for MFA.
- Default security posture and the ability to disable unnecessary interfaces and protocols.
- Log detail, exportability, and configuration-change history.
- Vulnerability disclosure process, supported lifecycle, update tooling, and recovery options.
- Network segmentation and management design, including cloud services and vendor access paths.
- Interoperability, operator control, and migration options.
- Operational impact and recovery behavior in light of documented facility safety requirements.
The cited sources do not rank controller brands or models. A feature list alone also cannot establish how securely a product is configured or operated at a particular site.
