What changed in YouTube Music
The redesign replaces much of YouTube Music’s older thin, sharp-edged iconography with heavier, softer forms. The changes are spread across navigation, playback controls, menus and the web player.

- Home: The icon is more descriptive than the previous version.
- Samples: The outline is visibly thicker.
- Explore and Library: Both receive bolder, more detailed artwork.
- Notifications: The bell is redrawn.
- Search: The magnifying-glass handle is shorter.
Now Playing controls
- The downward chevron, Cast symbol and overflow-menu dots are updated.
- Play, pause, previous and next controls use rounder styling.
- Shuffle is heavier, while Repeat receives one of the largest visual revisions.
- The comments icon is substantially redrawn.
- The thumbs-up and thumbs-down buttons now use the cartoon-like hand illustrations.
Overflow menu and web player
- The album icon in the overflow menu is redesigned.
- The sleep-timer symbol is more circular and may be harder to interpret at a glance.
- The Pin to Speed dial icon is tilted.
- On the web player, the volume icon is also changed, although the new shape can look abstract.
Why the thumbs icons attract attention
Most interface glyphs reduce an object to a simple silhouette. These reaction buttons do the opposite: the hand is unusually articulated, the thumb is elongated, and three knuckles are visible. That makes the controls feel closer to an animated illustration than a conventional utility icon.

The confirmed coverage is YouTube Music on Android, iPhone and iPad, and the web. Similar symbols were reportedly spotted in the main YouTube app, but that observation is separate and does not confirm that the same redesign launched there.
Appearance can still vary temporarily by device, account or staged delivery. No exact Android or iOS app version is documented for this change.
How to check if the new icons are visible
- Close YouTube Music completely and reopen it.
- Check the Home, Samples, Explore and Library tabs.
- Start a track and inspect the Now Playing reaction and playback controls.
- At music.youtube.com, reload the page and check the player controls.
- If the icons remain unchanged, install any available YouTube Music update from your device’s app store and check again.
9to5Google suggested force-stopping the app as a possible way to surface the update. That is a third-party troubleshooting suggestion, not a guaranteed or documented Google procedure. The available reporting does not establish that clearing app data, reinstalling, changing accounts or subscribing to Premium is required.

What the redesign does—and does not—mean
Potential advantages
- Heavier forms may be easier to spot quickly.
- Rounded symbols create a more consistent look across navigation and playback.
- More descriptive artwork may help new or infrequent users recognize controls.
Possible drawbacks
- Extra detail can make some symbols less immediately recognizable.
- The circular sleep-timer artwork may be ambiguous.
- The hand illustrations may feel stylistically inconsistent with the otherwise functional icon set.
- A thicker icon is not proof of better accessibility; legibility also depends on contrast, size and platform scaling.
Google has not been shown here to explain the design rationale, and no official statement establishes an accessibility improvement or a named design-system release such as Material You, Material 3 or Material 3 Expressive.
Does YouTube Music Premium unlock the new icons?
No. The visual refresh is not presented as a Premium benefit. YouTube Music continues to have an ad-supported tier, while Premium adds features such as ad-free music, background play, audio-only playback and downloads, as described by YouTube’s help documentation. The icon update itself does not establish a reason to subscribe.
