YouTube Loop Streaming: Monthly Cost of a Home NAS vs. a Cloud VM

Estimate the monthly cost of a 24/7 YouTube loop on a NAS or cloud VM using measured power, your electricity tariff, and the full cloud bill.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no universal monthly-cost winner. An already-owned NAS can cost only a few dollars in incremental electricity in a low-power scenario, while a cloud VM can cost substantially more once it runs around the clock—but its hourly compute price is not the whole bill. Use your measured NAS power draw and local electricity tariff, then compare them with the VM’s compute, storage, network charges, and any managed encoding. The figures below are examples, not a quote for your particular setup.

How to compare the costs fairly

Compare the same service and runtime: a YouTube stream that runs continuously for an average month. This article uses 730 hours as a convenient average-month calculation convention. Your calendar month may be shorter or longer.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Separate recurring operating costs from costs that depend on what you already own. For a NAS, count only the electricity use added by the streaming workload and any equipment that would not otherwise be on. For a cloud VM, include compute plus the storage and network charges applicable to your provider, region, and configuration. If you buy new hardware, also account for its purchase cost and replacement over time; the examples below do not include depreciation.

Home NAS: calculate incremental electricity

Formula

Monthly electricity cost = average incremental watts × operating hours ÷ 1,000 × electricity price per kWh.

  • Entry-level NAS Personal Storage:UGREEN NAS DH2300 is your first and best NAS made easy. It is designed for beginners who want a simple, private way to store videos, photos and personal files, which is intuitive for users moving from cloud storage or external drives and move away from scattered date across devices. This entry-level NAS 2-bay perfect for personal entertainment, photo storage, and easy data backup (doesn't support Docker or virtual machines).
  • Set Your Devices Free, Expand Your Digital World: This unified storage hub supports massive capacity up to 64TB.*Storage drives not included. Stop Deleting, Start Storing. UGREEN NAS is a better way to free up storage across all your devices such as phones, computers, tablets and also does automatic backups across devices regardless of the operating system—Window, iOS, Android or macOS.
  • The Smarter Long-term Way to Store: Unlike cloud storage with recurring monthly fees, a UGREEN NAS enclosure requires only a one-time purchase for long-term use. For example, you only need to pay $459.98 for a NAS, while for cloud storage, you need to pay $719.88 per year, $2,159.64 for 3 years, $3,599.40 for 5 years. You will save $6,738.82 over 10 years with UGREEN NAS! *NAS cost based on DH2300 + 12TB HDD; cloud cost based on 12TB plan (e.g. $59.99/month).
  • Blazing Speed, Minimal Power: Equipped with a high-performance processor, 1GbE port, and 4GB RAM on Board, this NAS handles multiple tasks with ease. File transfers reach up to 125MB/s—a 1GB file takes only 8 seconds. Don't let slow clouds hold you back; they often need over 100 seconds for the same task. The difference is clear.
  • Let AI Better Organize Your Memories: UGREEN NAS uses AI to tag faces, locations, texts, and objects—so you can effortlessly find any photo by searching for who or what's in it in seconds. It also automatically finds and deletes similar or duplicate photo, backs up live photos and allows you to share them with your friends or family with just one tap. Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.

Use the NAS and encoder’s average draw under the intended streaming workload, if you can measure it. An idle reading or a generic device specification may not reflect continuous operation. Include disks, cooling, or extra networking equipment only if they are additional to the streaming project.

Illustration, not a NAS benchmark

At an assumed continuous incremental draw of 30 W, consumption over 730 hours is 0.030 kW × 730 h = 21.9 kWh. At $0.173 per kWh, that scenario costs about $3.79 per month. The 30 W figure is an explicit example assumption, not a measured or published typical NAS draw.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration reported a 2025 U.S. residential average of 17.30¢/kWh in 2026. Its reported 2025 state range ran from 8.20¢/kWh in North Dakota to 35.72¢/kWh in Hawaii, so the average is only a benchmark—not a substitute for your bill or local tariff. EIA electricity data.

Cloud VM: compute is only part of the bill

Choose a provider, region, machine type, operating system, and runtime before estimating. As one dated example, Google Cloud’s live pricing page, accessed 2026-10-03, displayed an on-demand c4-standard-2 rate of $0.096866 per hour for its listed region example. At 730 hours, that is approximately $70.71 for compute alone. Google’s VM price table excludes disk and networking, and pricing varies by region and discounts. Check the current configuration and charges on Google Cloud’s VM pricing page.

Do not treat that compute figure as an all-in cloud total. Add the storage you need, network charges for your specific setup, and any other applicable services. The available example does not establish a network-egress rate for an unspecified provider or region, so a precise total requires your actual configuration and price sheet.

VM encoder versus managed encoding

A VM running encoder software is not the same architecture as a managed live-encoding service. Google says its Live Stream API is billed by active channel time and input/output resolution, with a ten-minute minimum and durations rounded up to the nearest minute. Price the configured service separately if you use it; do not automatically add it to a VM-only setup. See Google Cloud Live Stream API pricing.

Make sure the stream configuration fits the comparison

The chosen resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate affect the workload you are pricing. YouTube supports encoder workflows using a stream URL and stream key; encoders can be software on a computer or standalone hardware. A dedicated hardware encoder is optional, and its purchase cost belongs in the calculation only if you need one. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.

YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS streaming, H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video, up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant-bitrate encoding. It recommends RTMPS and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Choose a quality your connection can sustain and test with the expected audio and movement. For H.264, YouTube’s recommendations include 3 Mbps for 720p30, 5 Mbps for 1080p30, and 6 Mbps for 1080p60. These are encoder input bitrates, not estimates of viewer-delivery bandwidth. Check YouTube’s current guidance at YouTube live encoder settings.

With YouTube ingest, your origin sends an encoded contribution stream to YouTube; viewer playback delivery is handled by YouTube. Still check your cloud provider’s network terms and charges for the chosen setup instead of assuming that creator-side traffic and viewer delivery are billed the same way.

Compare the real trade-offs, not just the electricity bill

Factor Home NAS Cloud VM
Recurring core cost Incremental electricity, based on measured workload draw and local tariff. Compute for the selected instance and runtime; add storage and applicable network charges.
Equipment and setup May use existing hardware, but include new hardware costs if a purchase is needed. Uses rented infrastructure; select and price the actual provider and region.
Power and connectivity Depends on home power, internet uptime, and any additional equipment. Depends on the provider’s service and network terms; the cited compute price alone establishes neither a complete bill nor an outage guarantee.
Maintenance You are responsible for the NAS, encoder, storage capacity, and local network. You are responsible for the VM and encoder configuration unless you choose a separate managed service.
Encoding choice Software on the NAS or another computer, or optional hardware. Software on the VM or a separately priced managed encoding service.

Neither example prices the value of your setup time, hardware replacement, UPS, home internet plan, or reliability requirements. Those may matter more than the electricity-only result. These figures do not establish a universal total for a NAS or cloud VM, or a universal winner.

A practical worksheet for your monthly estimate

  1. Fix the workload. Choose the target resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate, then confirm your upload can sustain the stream. Use the same target for each option.
  2. Measure the home setup. Estimate or measure average incremental watts while the NAS and encoder perform the intended workload. Exclude power draw that would occur regardless, and include only extra disks or equipment.
  3. Apply your electricity rate. Multiply incremental watts by 730, divide by 1,000, then multiply by your actual price per kWh.
  4. Price the cloud configuration. Select the provider, region, machine, operating system, and 730-hour runtime. Add its disk and network charges, then separately include any managed encoding or other service you plan to use.
  5. Add one-time and operational costs. If relevant, account for newly purchased hardware, replacement, UPS, backups, and the time you will spend maintaining either arrangement. Keep these separate from recurring electricity or compute so the comparison remains readable.
  6. Compare the result against your needs. Consider how you will handle a home power or internet interruption, NAS capacity limits, and the maintenance you are willing to do—not only the lowest monthly line item.

Or let it run in the cloud

With StreamNeo, upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded videos from the cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on. Each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube and plays uploaded videos; it does not stream from a camera.
