Teaching a class does not automatically give a school or coaching channel permission to livestream every textbook page, song, image, or video clip—or to keep the recording online afterward. India’s Copyright Act contains specific education-related exceptions, but the cited provisions do not establish a blanket exemption for public YouTube streams, commercial coaching, or permanent archives. Check the rights for each third-party item and the intended audience and uses; YouTube’s platform enforcement is a separate question from whether a use is legally permitted.
Can I livestream a class on YouTube with textbook pages, music, or video clips?
It depends on the material, the rights you have, how you use it, who can watch, and whether you keep an archive. A teaching purpose matters, but it is not by itself a licence to use someone else’s work. Before going live, identify third-party content in the slides and audio or video, including scanned pages, photographs, diagrams, music, clips, and recorded broadcasts. The presence of an item on a teaching slide does not by itself settle whether its use is allowed.

YouTube Help says that live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including another live broadcast. If YouTube identifies a match, it may replace the stream image, warn the streamer, interrupt the stream, or terminate it if the material remains. Those platform actions do not decide whether an Indian copyright exception applies.

Does India’s educational copyright exception cover coaching classes?
Section 52 of the Copyright Act, 1957 contains more than one education-related provision. One refers to reproduction by a teacher or pupil “in the course of instruction.” A separate provision concerns certain performances or communications by an educational institution for a defined audience that includes its staff and students, their parents and guardians, and people connected with the institution’s activities.

These are specific provisions, not a general statement that any use is allowed whenever someone is teaching. The cited statutory material does not resolve whether a particular open public stream, paid coaching class, remote lesson, or later on-demand recording qualifies. The facts of the use, the audience, and the material matter. A coaching provider should not assume that charging for classes either automatically rules out an exception or automatically brings the stream within one.
YouTube’s fair-use guidance describes US law and notes that copyright rules differ by country. It also says Content ID cannot decide fair use, which is subjective and case-specific. For an Indian class, US fair-use guidance is not a substitute for considering the Indian law that applies.

How audience and archiving choices affect the question
| Choice or situation | What it changes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Live delivery without an archive | The intended use is the live communication; YouTube’s live-stream scanning can still interrupt it. | Not keeping a recording does not, by itself, establish that the live use is permitted. |
| Keeping an archive | The recording remains available for later viewing. YouTube says a Content ID claim on an archived livestream may be made after the live stream ends. | An archive is not automatically covered just because the original event was a class. |
| Audience limited to an institution | The audience may be relevant to the separate Section 52 provision for certain institutional performances or communications. | The provision’s audience description does not establish that every private online class qualifies. |
| Open public audience | A public stream reaches beyond a defined institutional audience. | The cited provisions do not say that every public educational stream is covered. |
| Teacher-created or licensed material | Original work or permission covering the intended use can reduce rights uncertainty. | A licence must be checked for its actual scope; possessing a copy or having a classroom-use permission is not necessarily permission for a public livestream and archive. |
| Content ID claim versus removal request | A Content ID claim is a platform claim; a formal copyright removal request follows a separate process and can result in removal and a strike if judged valid. | Neither a platform claim nor an interruption is itself a court ruling on whether an Indian exception applies. |
Pre-stream checklist for a school or coaching channel
- Inventory third-party material. Review every slide and the planned audio and video for music, film or online clips, photos, diagrams, scanned pages, and broadcasts. Record what the item is, who owns it if known, and how it will appear in the lesson.
- Prefer material you created or have permission to use. YouTube identifies permission and Creative Commons licensing as possible routes for using others’ content. Check the specific licence terms and whether they allow the intended live and archived uses; neither route guarantees that YouTube will not make a platform claim.
- Check the licence’s scope. For essential licensed content, confirm that permission covers YouTube or the relevant platform, the territories, livestreaming, the archive, and the required duration. If the rights holder has licensed the content and YouTube enforcement is a concern, YouTube advises asking that owner to allowlist the channel where applicable. A licence alone may not prevent a live interruption if the channel has not been allowlisted.
- Decide whether to archive before going live. Set the recording choice deliberately rather than treating the archive as an automatic extension of the lesson. If you do keep it, review the recording and its platform status afterward; YouTube says claims on archived livestreams can occur after the live session ends.
- Keep permission records. Retain the licence or written permission and note which materials it covers, the permitted audience, and whether it includes live and on-demand use. This makes it easier to check the scope if a claim or complaint arises.
If YouTube flags the stream or recording
First identify what happened: a live interruption, a Content ID claim on an archive, or a formal copyright removal request. They are not interchangeable, and none alone settles the underlying legal question.
- During a live interruption: YouTube may replace the image, issue a warning, interrupt the stream, or terminate it if matching material continues. If the stream is interrupted, remove or replace the identified material before resuming where possible, and review the rights and platform notice rather than assuming the interruption proves infringement.
- For an archived-stream Content ID claim: Check the claimed material and the options in YouTube Studio. Compare the claim with the relevant permission and intended use. YouTube’s automated system cannot decide whether a use is fair use, and a claim is not a court determination under Indian law.
- For a removal request: YouTube’s removal process is distinct from Content ID. If the request is judged valid, YouTube removes the material and applies a strike. Available responses include seeking a retraction from the claimant or submitting a counter notification when you believe the removal was mistaken or an exception applies. A counter notification is a consequential legal step; get qualified advice if the facts are disputed or unclear.
A cloud host does not change copyright permissions
If your school chooses to run a pre-recorded lesson as a YouTube livestream, StreamNeo is one way to keep the uploaded video running from the cloud: upload a recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos; it does not make a camera livestream. Hosting the stream in the cloud does not grant rights to textbook pages, music, clips, or other third-party material, and it does not prevent YouTube copyright enforcement. StreamNeo is YouTube-only.
