Then separate a malformed or unreachable URL from DNS failure, destination-site blocking, a slow render, or a temporary problem at the API provider. These are distinct failures, and increasing a timeout only helps the slow-render case.
1. Find out which request failed
Inspect the API response before trying to open the output as a screenshot. A service may return raw image bytes on success and a structured error payload on failure. Record the API request’s HTTP status, content type, response body, and any diagnostic headers.

Keep the API’s status separate from the destination page’s final status. For example, Screenshot API documents a response header named X-Page-Status for the final target document status after redirects. A 401 or 403 in that header can mean the capture reached a login or error page, even if the API request itself succeeded. See Screenshot API’s documentation for its endpoint and response details.

- Confirm the endpoint, HTTP method, authentication method, and parameter or request-body field match the provider’s current documentation.
- Read the response as text or JSON when the request fails; do not treat every response as PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF data.
- Save the API status and any separately reported target-page status. They answer different questions.
2. Validate the URL and public reachability
Check that the submitted URL is complete, has a supported scheme, and uses the intended hostname. Most hosted screenshot renderers need a destination that they can reach from their own network; a page that loads on your laptop is not necessarily reachable from the provider.

- Scheme and syntax: Confirm the URL is well-formed and uses HTTP or HTTPS if those are the schemes supported by the API.
- DNS: Confirm the hostname resolves publicly. ScreenshotOne uses
name_not_resolvedfor a hostname it cannot resolve and notes that a newly published site may need time for DNS changes to take effect. See ScreenshotOne’s error reference. - Private or reserved addresses: A localhost URL, intranet hostname, or private IP is generally inaccessible to a public hosted renderer. Screenshot API documents restrictions on private and reserved destinations, embedded credentials, unsupported ports, non-HTTP(S) schemes, and hostnames resolving to restricted ranges. - Access design: Do not expose private content merely to make a capture work. Coordinate with the site owner and use an access method appropriate to the content; do not bypass a deliberate security boundary.
3. Use the provider’s exact error to choose the next check
Error labels are provider-specific, not a universal vocabulary. Preserve the provider name and exact code when diagnosing or asking for help.

Other providers use different codes. ScreenshotAPI, for instance, documents labels including ERR_ADDRESS_UNREACHABLE, ERR_CONNECTION_REFUSED, tunnel errors, TLS mismatch, and timeout. Do not assume that a code or HTTP-status mapping from one service means the same thing on another. Compare the provider’s documentation: Screenshot API, ScreenshotOne, and ScreenshotAPI.

4. Change wait conditions only when rendering is the problem
If the provider reports a timeout and DNS and access checks pass, adjust capture timing. A page can be slow to navigate, render, or satisfy an overly demanding wait condition. ScreenshotOne lists slow sites, pages that do not emit DOMContentLoaded, and excessive configured delay as possible contributors. Cloudflare Browser Rendering documents navigation wait choices such as load, domcontentloaded, and network-idle variants, with timeout controls; the available options and limits depend on the service. - Reduce unnecessary fixed delay after navigation.
- If the capture waits for network idle, test a less demanding event when the page continually loads resources or keeps connections open.
- Raise the timeout only within the provider’s supported limits and only when the page is genuinely slow.
- Retest with the same target and settings changed one at a time so the result points to a cause.
A longer timeout cannot repair an invalid URL, failed DNS resolution, a refused connection, or a destination that blocks the renderer. Defaults and maximums differ among APIs, so use the current provider documentation rather than copying another service’s setting.

5. Check blocking and network differences
If the page works from your computer but fails from the hosted renderer, check whether the site owner blocks automated browser traffic, unfamiliar IP ranges, or particular regions, or requires an authentication flow that the capture request does not provide. ScreenshotOne identifies target blocking as one possible cause of network_error. Ask the site owner or API provider to confirm that automated access is permitted.
A proxy is a conditional diagnostic, not the default fix. ScreenshotOne’s timeout guidance says, “A proxy is not the first fix for timeout_error.” It places proxy retries after steps such as reducing page weight or delay and adjusting timeout behavior; a proxy may help with apparent IP throttling, regional routing, or a stall tied to a default IP range. 6. Retry carefully, then escalate with useful evidence
For an explicitly temporary provider error, wait briefly and retry according to that provider’s instructions. ScreenshotOne describes temporary_unavailable as a temporary error or overload and recommends waiting and retrying. Avoid aggressive retry loops, especially after a rate-limit response.

- Provider, endpoint, HTTP method, and target URL.
- UTC timestamp, API response status, exact error code and message, and target-page status if separately reported.
- Request ID or correlation identifier, if the response exposes one.
- Relevant wait or timeout settings and whether the target is reachable from your own network.
Redact API keys, authorization headers, cookies, passwords, and other secrets before sharing a request or logs. ScreenshotOne’s timeout guidance recommends contacting support when its troubleshooting steps do not resolve the issue.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does a screenshot API report an error when the site opens in my browser?
The API renderer may use a different network, region, or IP range, or the destination may treat automated requests differently. Check the exact provider error and whether the site permits that renderer’s traffic.
Should I use a proxy when a screenshot API cannot connect?
Only after URL, DNS, access, and timeout checks indicate a network-route or IP-based issue, and only if the destination permits automated access.
