Choose a YouTube playlist if your radio station is a catalog of uploaded programs or tracks that should repeat. YouTube has a specific control for looping an entire playlist. Choose YouTube Live when you need one shared real-time broadcast, such as a program with live interaction. A playlist loop is not a live broadcast, and autoplay is not a reliable substitute for repeat.

YouTube’s documentation does not establish that either format gets more listeners, is more discoverable, or has better real-world uptime. The right choice depends on whether the station needs a live shared event or repeat playback of a catalog.
When a playlist is the better fit
Use playlist repeat for a catalog-based station
If your programming is prerecorded and you do not need real-time interaction, arrange the videos into a playlist and turn on the playlist repeat control in the player. YouTube documents looping a whole playlist on computer, mobile, TV, and game-console apps. Do not confuse autoplay with looping
Autoplay chooses a related next video; it does not mean “repeat this playlist.” It can stop after inactivity, and YouTube may display a continue-watching prompt. When YouTube Live is the better fit
Choose a live feed for a shared real-time broadcast
Live is appropriate when the station needs one real-time broadcast—for example, to accompany a live host or interaction. It is not simply a playlist that happens to keep playing: the feed must be running through a supported method. YouTube lists mobile, webcam, encoder, and console methods; encoder workflows use a YouTube stream URL and stream key. Some advanced controls depend on the method or channel. Understand eligibility before planning a broadcast
YouTube’s current live-start guidance says a channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. It also says creators must be at least 16 years old to live stream. Check YouTube’s guidance for current requirements and method-specific details before scheduling the station.

Plan for the limits of a long live broadcast
Keep a separate recording
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived; a stream over 12 hours may not be captured at all. Its wording is explicit: “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” Do not treat a single 24/7 event as a dependable archive of the station. Keep a local recording if you need a copy. YouTube archive guidance.
Do not promise unlimited rewind
Live DVR can let viewers pause and rewind, but YouTube says very long streams may have limited or unavailable rewind. Viewers also cannot seek to a point before the broadcast began. If listeners need reliable access to a full program later, publish recordings as individual videos rather than relying on one prolonged live event. YouTube DVR guidance.

Clear music and playlist rights
Rights need to cover the station’s actual use and territory, including the live broadcast and any archive. YouTube’s livestream terms say the provider represents that it has the necessary rights for live and archived content, including music licensing rights and applicable regulatory permissions. YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches. If matched content remains, YouTube may replace the stream with a placeholder, interrupt it, or terminate the broadcast. For licensed third-party material, YouTube advises asking the rights holder to add the channel to its Content ID allowlist; having a license alone may not prevent an interruption.
