YouTube Live Upload Speed and Bitrate Settings: A Practical Guide

YouTube Live bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate. Match the encoder recommendation, budget upload headroom, and test stream health before going live.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose YouTube’s recommended bitrate for your stream’s codec, resolution, and frame rate, then make sure your upload capacity can carry the total stream bitrate with headroom. For example, YouTube recommends 17 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p60; its general network guidance recommends leaving 20% room, so plan for roughly 20.4 Mbps of available upload capacity for that single stream. These are recommendations, not guarantees: connection stability and competing network traffic matter too.

Choose the bitrate for your exact stream

YouTube’s live encoder recommendations depend on the video ingestion codec, resolution, and frame rate. Use the matching row below. Values are video bitrate in Mbps; they are YouTube Help recommendations on the page surfaced on October 3, 2026, not measured guarantees. YouTube’s live table also distinguishes minimum from recommended settings; the table below shows the recommended values, not minimums. Check YouTube’s live encoder settings before a broadcast because recommendations can change.

Resolution and frame rate AV1 or H.265 H.264
2160p (4K), 60 fps 35 Mbps 50 Mbps
2160p (4K), 30 fps 30 Mbps 42 Mbps
1440p, 60 fps 24 Mbps 34 Mbps
1440p, 30 fps 15 Mbps 21 Mbps
1080p, 60 fps 12 Mbps 17 Mbps
1080p, 30 fps 10 Mbps 14 Mbps
720p, 60 fps 6 Mbps 8 Mbps
720p, 30 fps 6 Mbps 8 Mbps
480p, 30 fps 3 Mbps 4 Mbps
360p, 30 fps 3 Mbps 4 Mbps

For example, if your encoder sends H.264 at 1080p60, use 17 Mbps as the recommended video bitrate; if it sends AV1 or H.265 at the same resolution and frame rate, use 12 Mbps. Do not select a value from the upload-video encoding table: file uploads and live-stream ingestion have different recommendations.

How much upload speed do you need?

Your internet connection must reliably send the stream out. Download speed is not a substitute: it is often higher and does not tell you how much outbound capacity is available. YouTube’s general network guidance says total stream bitrate must remain below available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving a 20% margin. The margin is guidance, not protection against every interruption or period of congestion. YouTube’s network recommendations also note that shared network use can reduce the bandwidth available to your stream.

Calculate the capacity to plan for

  1. Start with the video bitrate from the table for your codec, resolution, and frame rate.
  2. Add any other stream traffic. Include audio and, if enabled, a backup stream. For multi-platform streaming, include each destination’s target bitrate.
  3. Allow headroom. For a single stream, YouTube’s general tip is 20% above total stream traffic. A simple planning formula is total bitrate × 1.2.
  4. Compare with a realistic upload measurement. Test outbound speed at the streaming location and under conditions similar to the event, including typical competing network use.

Example: a 10 Mbps primary stream plus a 10 Mbps backup totals 20 Mbps before headroom. Applying YouTube’s 20% recommendation gives a simple target of about 24 Mbps of available upload. This is arithmetic applied to YouTube’s guidance, not a tested performance result.

Is 10 Mbps upload enough for 1080p?

It depends on frame rate and codec, and 10 Mbps of upload capacity is not the same as a 10 Mbps stream target. YouTube recommends 10 Mbps video bitrate for AV1 or H.265 at 1080p30, and 14 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p30. At 1080p60, it recommends 12 Mbps for AV1 or H.265 and 17 Mbps for H.264. A 10 Mbps connection therefore does not provide the recommended 20% headroom even for the 10 Mbps video target, before accounting for audio or other stream traffic.

When streaming to more than one destination

YouTube’s separate simulstreaming guidance recommends upload capacity 1.5 to 2 times the combined target bitrates, particularly on shared connections. For example, target bitrates of 6 Mbps and 4 Mbps total 10 Mbps; YouTube’s guidance implies aiming for 15–20 Mbps of upload capacity. This is a more conservative multi-destination recommendation than the general 20% margin; use the simulstreaming guidance for that case. Read YouTube’s simulstreaming bandwidth guidance.

  • Protocol: Use RTMPS, YouTube’s recommended secure extension to RTMP. YouTube explains its streaming protocols.
  • Video codec: YouTube lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 as supported options. Choose the matching bitrate column above.
  • Rate control: Set video bitrate encoding to CBR (constant bitrate).
  • Keyframes: Set a 2-second keyframe interval; do not exceed 4 seconds.
  • Frame rate: YouTube’s general encoder recommendations allow up to 60 fps. Use the row matching the frame rate you actually send.
  • Audio codec: AAC or MP3. For stereo, YouTube’s advanced guidance lists 44.1 kHz sampling and 128 kbps. For 5.1 surround, it lists 48 kHz and 384 kbps. These audio values are separate from the video bitrate recommendations.

Test before going live

  1. Configure the encoder with the intended codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, CBR, and keyframe interval.
  2. Run a private or otherwise non-public test stream before the event, using audio and movement similar to the planned broadcast.
  3. Measure upload capacity at the streaming location; focus on outbound speed, not the download result.
  4. Check YouTube’s stream health and messages during the test and while live. If the stream is unstable, reduce the target bitrate or resolve competing network load, then test again.

YouTube’s testing guidance emphasizes representative audio and motion, and monitoring stream health and messages. Review YouTube’s streaming tips before the event.

Troubleshoot bitrate and upload problems

  • Stream drops or reports unstable health: Available upload may be fluctuating or shared with other traffic. Recheck upload at the streaming location under typical load, reduce competing traffic, and confirm the stream’s total bitrate fits within available capacity with headroom.
  • Upload test looks fast, but the stream still struggles: A single speed result does not establish sustained capacity throughout a broadcast. Repeat the test at another time and run a representative preflight; watch YouTube’s stream-health messages.
  • Encoder bitrate is below YouTube’s recommended row: Verify codec, resolution, and frame rate first, then compare the correct row. Remember the table’s values are recommendations, not universal settings for every connection.
  • Primary stream works, backup causes trouble: Count both streams when planning upload capacity. A 10 Mbps primary plus a 10 Mbps backup consumes 20 Mbps of stream traffic before headroom.
  • Multiple destinations cause congestion: Add all destination bitrates and plan for 1.5 to 2 times their total upload capacity under YouTube’s simulstreaming guidance.
  • Keyframe or rate-control mismatch: Confirm CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval, keeping the interval at or below 4 seconds.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you are streaming uploaded recordings as a continuous YouTube channel, StreamNeo keeps the stream running from the cloud: upload a video or playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube only.

Copyright and live-stream eligibility

A technically stable stream is not automatically permitted content. Before broadcasting, make sure you have the rights needed for every video, audio track, and other material in the stream, and check YouTube’s current live-streaming and copyright requirements.
