YouTube Live Stuttering at 60 FPS? Bitrate and Encoder Settings to Check

YouTube’s recommended bitrate depends on resolution and codec. Use CBR, a two-second keyframe interval, and a representative test to pinpoint whether stutter comes from the connection, viewers’ playback, or local rendering and encoding.

If your YouTube Live stream stutters at 60 fps, first check whether OBS is actually dropping frames. For H.264, YouTube recommends 12 Mbps at 1080p60, 34 Mbps at 1440p60, and 50 Mbps at 2160p60. Use constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, then test with representative audio and movement. Those are YouTube’s ingestion recommendations—not proof that your upload connection, encoder, or viewers can sustain the stream smoothly.

Start with the right 60 fps settings

Choose settings for the resolution you send to YouTube and the codec your encoder uses. YouTube supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for live video, and frame rates up to 60 fps. Its current encoder guidance recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval; do not set the interval above four seconds. Use RTMP or RTMPS for ingestion. YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance lists these recommended video bitrates for 60 fps:

Ingestion resolution H.264 recommended bitrate AV1/H.265 recommended bitrate
720p60 8 Mbps 6 Mbps
1080p60 12 Mbps 12 Mbps
1440p60 34 Mbps 24 Mbps
2160p/4K60 50 Mbps 35 Mbps

These are YouTube recommendations, not guaranteed minimum upload speeds or a promise of smooth playback. The same page lists lower minimum bitrates; for example, at 1080p60 it lists 6 Mbps for H.264 and 4 Mbps for AV1/H.265. A minimum is not a sensible target if your connection cannot hold the recommended bitrate steadily.

Match the bitrate to the job

Higher resolution calls for more bitrate, but the best choice also depends on the encoder and the people watching. If your upload path cannot reliably sustain the recommended rate, lowering resolution or bitrate is preferable to repeatedly pushing a rate that fluctuates. Likewise, 60 fps is supported, but it is not automatically the right tradeoff for every connection, encoding system, or audience.

Use a codec your encoder and setup support

YouTube publishes different recommendations for H.264 and AV1/H.265. Select an option actually supported by your encoder and streaming setup; do not assume changing codecs alone will cure stutter. If the problem is local rendering or encoding overload, check OBS statistics and logs before changing hardware or choosing a different encoder preset.

Run a representative test before going live

A bitrate number cannot diagnose the connection from your computer to YouTube’s ingest server. YouTube advises testing before the event with audio and movement similar to the intended stream, then monitoring stream health and its messages. A static screen is not a representative test for a stream with motion.

  1. Set the intended resolution, frame rate, codec, CBR bitrate, and keyframe interval in your encoder.
  2. Run a private or otherwise suitable test stream with the audio and movement your actual broadcast will contain.
  3. Watch OBS statistics and save the OBS log if stutter occurs. Note whether frames are dropped, missed during rendering, or missed during encoding.
  4. Check YouTube’s stream-health messages while the test is running. Change one variable at a time and repeat the test so you can identify what changed.

The title alone cannot reveal your computer, encoder, upload route, or the exact kind of stutter, so those observations determine the next step.

If OBS shows dropped frames

OBS defines dropped frames as a connection to the remote server that is unstable or unable to keep up with the set bitrate. That points first to the network path or an unsustainable bitrate, not automatically to an underpowered PC. See OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide.

Lower the bitrate to a rate your upload can sustain

Run an upload speed test and compare the result with the stream’s total upload demand. OBS offers 75% of total upload speed as a starting heuristic for a streaming bitrate. It is only a starting point: a speed-test result does not guarantee stable capacity throughout a live broadcast, and the chosen bitrate must still make sense for YouTube’s limits and your resolution and codec. If the stream continues dropping frames, test a lower video bitrate.

Check connection stability before replacing equipment

  • If you are on Wi-Fi, test a wired Ethernet connection; OBS recommends wired connectivity where Wi-Fi may be unstable.
  • Check for possible interference from VPN, security, or network-prioritization software.
  • Consider outdated network drivers or faults involving the modem, router, cables, network cards, switches, or extenders. A suspect cable is one possible cause, not a cure for every kind of stutter.
  • If troubleshooting does not resolve the connection problem, OBS advises contacting your ISP. Diagnose first rather than buying hardware on the assumption that it is the cause.
  • If available, try another YouTube ingest server and compare the test results.

If viewers buffer but OBS shows no dropped frames

A clean broadcaster-side connection does not guarantee smooth playback for every viewer. People watch from different networks, locations, and devices; a bitrate or resolution that works for you may be difficult for some of them to receive. YouTube says it automatically transcodes live streams into multiple output formats, but viewers’ network and device conditions still differ. If reports continue, test a lower input resolution, bitrate, or frame rate and weigh the visual benefit of 60 fps against audience accessibility. See OBS’s buffering troubleshooting guide.

If the problem looks like rendering or encoding lag

Dropped frames are a connection symptom; rendering or encoding misses are different OBS statistics. Inspect the actual statistics and log when the stutter happens, then test lower output demands one variable at a time. There is no universal CPU/GPU setting or encoder preset established here that fixes local overload, and a PC upgrade should not be the first response to an undiagnosed symptom. For device-specific diagnosis, the useful details are the OBS log, system and encoder model, output resolution, and whether OBS attributes the missed frames to rendering or encoding.
