YouTube says streamers must be at least 16. Brand Account status does not add a separate eligibility test; mobile streaming has its own 50-subscriber minimum. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours. YouTube’s live-streaming guidance and its mobile requirements explain the distinctions.
What a Brand Account channel needs to go live
Check eligibility on the specific YouTube channel you intend to use, not just the Google account or Brand Account that manages it. YouTube’s general requirements are:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- The channel is verified.
- The channel has had no live-stream restriction during the previous 90 days.
- The person streaming is at least 16 years old.
These are channel-level requirements; YouTube’s general guidance does not describe a separate live-stream eligibility test for Brand Accounts. If live streaming has not previously been enabled on the channel, activate it and allow up to 24 hours for access to become available. Check YouTube’s current live-stream eligibility guidance if access is still unavailable.
Mobile streaming is different
To stream from the YouTube mobile app, the channel must also have at least 50 subscribers and use a supported device. YouTube’s mobile help page lists Android 8.0 or later and iOS 8 or later; device requirements can change, so confirm the latest information on YouTube’s mobile live-stream page. The 50-subscriber threshold is for mobile streaming, not a general requirement for desktop webcam or encoder streams.

Make sure the person has permission
A channel can meet YouTube’s eligibility rules while a particular Brand Account user still lacks permission to start a stream. YouTube recommends managing delegated access through channel permissions. Under its current role guidance, owners, managers, and editors can manage live streams. Viewer and viewer-limited roles cannot start or end streams, access the stream key, or edit stream settings and metadata. Brand Account communications managers cannot use YouTube. Review the current channel-permission role matrix before assigning access.
Move Brand Account access to channel permissions
- The primary Brand Account owner signs in to YouTube Studio.
- Open Settings → Permissions and choose Move permissions.
- Assign each existing Brand Account user a channel-permission level and invite the users who need access.
YouTube says the primary Brand Account owner must opt in to channel permissions. See its migration instructions for the current process. Give people only the level of access needed; a viewer role is not enough to operate a live stream.

You do not need a dedicated encoder or an external webcam just to qualify to stream. Its live-streaming tips also say expensive equipment is not necessary to get started.

Set up and test an encoder stream
Use this route for gameplay, screen sharing, or a stream built around external audio or video equipment.
- Open YouTube Studio: select the intended channel, then choose Create → Go live.
- Create or select the stream: use the Live Control Room to set up the live stream or select an existing one.
- Connect the encoder: copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube into the encoder’s connection settings. Treat the key like a password; do not share it publicly.
- Start the encoder and check the preview: confirm the expected video and audio appear in YouTube’s Live Control Room before starting the event.
- Verify playback: check the channel or watch page and test playback on a mobile device. Monitor audio and video during the stream.
If a key is compromised, YouTube says only a channel owner or manager can reset it. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions and the channel-permissions guidance.

Allow time for a reliable start
YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least two hours before the event and starting it at least 15 minutes before a scheduled stream. Its network-planning advice is to have 20% more available bandwidth than the total stream bitrate. These are preparation recommendations, not eligibility rules. If you record locally, check that the archive is growing. The full checklist is in YouTube’s streaming tips.

Why a Brand Account channel may not be able to go live
- Live streaming is not enabled yet: activate it for the correct channel and allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation.
- The channel is not verified: verify the channel before trying again.
- There was a recent live-stream restriction: YouTube’s general eligibility guidance requires no live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days.
- The operator is a viewer or viewer-limited user: ask an owner, manager, or editor to grant an appropriate channel-permission role.
- You are trying to stream from mobile with fewer than 50 subscribers: the threshold applies to mobile streaming. Consider another eligible method or wait until the channel meets the mobile requirement.
- The encoder has no preview: check that the correct stream URL and key are entered, the encoder is sending a signal, and the intended channel and stream are selected in Studio.
- The stream key may have been exposed: ask a channel owner or manager to reset it, then update the encoder with the new key.
- The stream is unstable: check bandwidth, audio, video, and playback on the channel or watch page; YouTube recommends network headroom of 20% beyond the stream’s total bitrate.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a 24/7 YouTube stream from uploaded videos, rather than a live camera or encoder production, StreamNeo can run the loop from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Each slot streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it includes 10 GB of storage per slot, pooled across active slots, and automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. It plays uploaded videos and streams to YouTube only; it is not a camera-streaming service. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
