YouTube Live Streaming Eligibility for Nonprofit Channels

Nonprofit channels use YouTube’s standard live-stream rules. The 50-subscriber minimum applies to mobile streaming, while YouTube Giving has separate eligibility criteria.

Nonprofit channels follow YouTube’s standard live-streaming rules. A channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and be operated by someone at least 16. The 50-subscriber minimum applies to streaming from the YouTube mobile app—not as a blanket requirement for every way to go live.

Eligibility depends on how your nonprofit streams

YouTube does not publish a special live-streaming exemption for nonprofit channels. Its general requirements apply whether a channel is run by a nonprofit or another creator. YouTube says: “To live stream, you need to have no live streaming restrictions in the past 90 days and you need to verify your channel.” The streamer must also be at least 16.

Streaming method Requirements What that means
General channel access Verified channel; no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days; streamer at least 16. Nonprofit status does not replace these requirements or add a separate general subscriber threshold.
YouTube mobile app General requirements, at least 50 subscribers, and a supported phone or tablet. First activation may take up to 24 hours. A channel under 50 subscribers should use another available method if it otherwise meets YouTube’s rules.
Webcam, encoder, or console These are listed as live-streaming methods under YouTube’s general guidance. Do not assume the mobile app’s 50-subscriber threshold applies to these methods; check the channel’s YouTube Studio status for any specific restriction.

Rules and thresholds can change. The official YouTube Help pages linked here were accessed on October 3, 2026; check the current requirements and your channel’s own status before planning an event.

Does a nonprofit need 50 subscribers to livestream?

Only if it wants to stream through the YouTube mobile app. YouTube’s mobile guidance sets a minimum of 50 subscribers for that method. That threshold is not a general eligibility rule for webcam, encoder, or console streaming in YouTube’s live-stream guidance. A smaller nonprofit channel may therefore be able to go live using another method, provided it meets the general requirements and YouTube does not show a channel-specific restriction.

How to check access and enable live streaming

  1. Verify the channel. Complete YouTube’s channel verification process if it has not already been verified. Verification is a general live-streaming requirement.
  2. Check the channel’s live-stream status. In YouTube Studio, review the channel’s live-streaming access and any restrictions. A live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days prevents eligibility under YouTube’s general guidance.
  3. Confirm the person operating the stream is at least 16. The minimum age applies to the streamer, not to the nonprofit’s organizational status.
  4. Choose the method and check its extra conditions. For the mobile app, confirm the channel has at least 50 subscribers and use a supported phone or tablet. Webcam, encoder, and console are other methods YouTube lists.
  5. Allow for activation time. YouTube says the first mobile live stream may take up to 24 hours after live streaming is enabled. Do not schedule a first mobile broadcast assuming access will be immediate.
  6. Run a private or unlisted rehearsal where appropriate. Confirm the selected method can connect and that the channel has access before announcing a public event.

Mobile limits for channels with fewer than 1,000 subscribers

Meeting the 50-subscriber mobile minimum does not necessarily mean a small channel receives unrestricted mobile access. YouTube may limit the number of viewers for mobile live streams from channels with more than 50 and fewer than 1,000 subscribers, and it may set the archive to private by default. If the channel falls below 50 subscribers, it loses mobile live-streaming access under YouTube’s guidance. These are mobile-specific limits, distinct from the general ability to stream by another method.

YouTube Nonprofit Program enrollment is separate

A nonprofit does not have to join the YouTube Nonprofit Program simply to qualify for ordinary live-stream access. Enrollment is a separate program activated through Google for Nonprofits. The organization needs a Google for Nonprofits account and a YouTube channel whose connection to the organization can be verified; Google says activation requests are reviewed within 2–14 business days.

Google for Nonprofits eligibility is also separate from YouTube Live eligibility. Google’s guidance says organizations must be registered as charitable organizations in supported countries and verified. Government entities, hospitals or healthcare organizations, and schools, academic institutions, and universities are generally excluded, with exceptions for certain affiliated charitable arms. Those rules determine access to Google for Nonprofits, not whether a channel can livestream.

Adding a donation fundraiser to a livestream

Being allowed to broadcast does not automatically make a channel eligible to add an in-platform fundraiser. YouTube Giving has its own rules. The creator channel must be in a supported location, have at least 10,000 subscribers, be in the YouTube Partner Program, and not be designated as made for kids.

The nonprofit receiving donations must separately be a US-registered 501(c)(3) public charity, opt into online fundraising through GuideStar, and comply with YouTube’s monetization policies. Private foundations are not currently supported. YouTube says Network for Good collects and distributes donations at Google’s request. Its FAQ says 100% of a contribution goes to the nonprofit and YouTube pays transaction fees; it also explains that Network for Good has legal control over donations once collected. Review YouTube’s current Giving terms before promising donors how funds will be handled.

Restrictions, other channels, and minors

  • Do not work around a restriction by switching channels. YouTube says using another channel to evade a live-streaming restriction violates its circumvention rules and can lead to account termination.
  • Adult-owned account with a person under 16 on stream: YouTube says the adult must be visibly present. Its general live-stream guidance warns that streams featuring 13–15-year-olds who are not visibly accompanied by an adult may have live chat disabled or access to chat or other features restricted.

Why a nonprofit channel cannot go live

What you see What to check Next step
Live streaming is unavailable Channel verification and YouTube Studio access status. Complete verification and follow any channel-specific instructions shown in Studio.
A restriction or suspension is shown Whether the channel had a live-stream restriction in the past 90 days. Follow YouTube’s restriction notice; do not attempt to bypass it with another channel.
Mobile streaming is unavailable below 50 subscribers The channel’s subscriber count and selected streaming method. Use a webcam, encoder, or console if available and otherwise eligible; do not treat the mobile threshold as a universal rule.
Mobile access has just been enabled Whether the first activation period has elapsed. Allow up to 24 hours for first mobile activation.
Mobile audience or archive behavior is limited Whether the channel has more than 50 but fewer than 1,000 subscribers. Plan for possible mobile viewer limits and an archive that may be private by default.
Someone under 16 appears in the stream Whether an adult is visibly present on the adult-owned account’s stream. Keep the adult visibly present; be aware of possible chat or feature restrictions for streams with 13–15-year-olds unaccompanied by an adult.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your nonprofit’s goal is to keep uploaded video looping on YouTube around the clock, StreamNeo is a cloud option rather than a way to bypass YouTube eligibility. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. It streams to YouTube only and plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
