Dynamic range in video is the span between the darkest and brightest parts of an image that retain useful detail. In camera terms, it describes what the sensor and recording pipeline can capture; in viewing terms, it describes what a screen can reproduce. Those are different ranges, and confusing them is a common reason camera specifications and HDR claims seem harder to compare than they are.
What dynamic range means in a video image
A scene may contain deep shadows, midtones and bright highlights. Dynamic range describes how much of that brightness span can be represented with meaningful detail, rather than crushed into black, lost in noise or clipped to featureless white.
A stop is an exposure step: one stop more light means twice as much light, and one stop less means half as much. Camera makers often express dynamic range in stops, but a stop count is meaningful only with its measurement context. Sensor, recording mode, exposure, noise threshold and test method can all affect the result.
Capture range and display range are not the same
A camera captures scene information through its sensor and recording pipeline. A monitor or television can reproduce only the brightness range its display and signal support. Footage may therefore contain more highlight and shadow information than a target screen can show at once; it needs an appropriate transform or grade for that screen.

The numbers published by manufacturers illustrate the difference, but they are not universal limits. ARRI says ALEXA 35 captures 17 stops, measured with its Xyla chart and ARRI Analysis method, while its HDR FAQ describes an SDR monitor as showing about eight stops. ARRI also states 14+ stops for its ALEV3 sensor, measured with the ARRI Dynamic Range Test Chart. Blackmagic Design lists 13 stops for its Pocket Cinema Camera product family. These are vendor claims made in particular contexts, not results from one common cross-brand test.
Apple’s current Motion guide describes SDR as having a range of 6 to 10 stops and maximum luminance around 100 nits. That framing differs from ARRI’s roughly eight-stop example; neither should be turned into a single exact universal SDR limit.
How to interpret camera stop-count claims
A larger published number does not automatically mean a camera will produce better footage in every scene. Before comparing claims, look for what was measured and how:
- Camera and recording mode: A specification may apply to a particular sensor or mode rather than every format the camera records.
- Test method: Manufacturers may use different charts and analysis methods, so their figures may not be directly comparable.
- Noise and detail threshold: The usable endpoint depends on when shadow noise makes information unusable and when highlights clip.
- Meaning of the count: Check whether a figure refers to total range or exposure latitude around middle gray.
There is no single “typical camera” stop count established across models by a shared independent benchmark here. Treat a quoted number as a model-specific specification unless comparable test conditions are given.
What Log recording does—and does not do
Log is an encoding approach that spreads captured tonal information across the recording signal so a broad range can be retained for later grading. It often looks flatter than a finished image because it has not yet been transformed for a viewing target. ARRI describes Log C as scene-based encoding and explains that each stop of exposure increases the signal by the same amount.

Log does not give a sensor more capture range, and shooting Log does not by itself make a video HDR. It encodes what the camera captured; the footage still needs a display transform or tone mapping for the intended SDR, HDR or projection workflow. If highlights clipped during capture or shadows were lost in noise, Log cannot restore that missing information.
Dynamic range versus HDR, SDR and color gamut
HDR and SDR describe different image and delivery approaches, not interchangeable names for camera sensor range. An HDR video must be encoded, graded, delivered and played through a suitable signal path and display. HDR workflows commonly use PQ or HLG transfer functions. Rec. 2020 identifies color primaries and gamut in the cited YouTube guidance; it is not another term for dynamic range.
YouTube’s HDR upload guidance calls for Rec. 2020 with PQ or HLG for HDR grading. It also says viewers on non-HDR devices receive an SDR version. That fallback does not mean the original capture lacked range; it means the platform provides a version suited to the viewer’s device.
Recommended Free Tools
SDR delivery may need a deliberate conversion from HDR or Log footage. Adobe documents tone mapping HLG or PQ HDR into the narrower Rec. 709 space. The goal is an intentional SDR image, not simply to squeeze every captured value into the display unchanged. Nor does HDR guarantee that an image will look brighter on every device: Sony cautions that HDR footage of a low-range scene can appear darker than SDR on a particular device.
Practical example: a bright window in a dim room
A room interior and a sunlit window can span more brightness than a camera records cleanly. If exposure protects the window, the room may fall into noisy shadows; if exposure favors the room, the window may clip. Greater usable capture latitude can preserve more information for grading, but it does not remove the need to choose exposure or lighting carefully.

In HDR, large clipped areas can be especially distracting because they contain no highlight detail. A waveform helps you see where brightness levels sit in the signal, but it cannot decide the intended look or guarantee that detail survives capture.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use a waveform to check signal levels
A waveform displays luma (brightness) levels and where they occur across the picture. It can help identify whether highlights are approaching clipping or shadows are pushed very low. Blackmagic Design’s Video Assist documentation describes waveform monitoring and HDR scope support.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsRead the scope alongside the image and the camera’s exposure tools. A waveform reports signal levels; it does not tell you whether a particular shadow should be dark, whether the image feels right, or whether the monitor is accurately showing the final delivery.
A simple workflow for choosing and checking a range
- Choose the delivery target first. Decide whether the finished video is for SDR, HDR PQ or HDR HLG, and confirm the intended platform and viewers’ playback devices can support that path.
- Expose for the scene and protect important detail. In a high-contrast scene, decide which highlights and shadows matter. Avoid assuming extra stops will rescue clipped highlights or unusably noisy shadows.
- Monitor levels. Use the image and, when available, a waveform to check where luma values sit. Treat the scope as a guide, not an automatic exposure decision.
- Apply the correct transform. Convert Log or HDR footage for the intended display space. For SDR, that may mean tone mapping into Rec. 709; for HDR, use a compatible HDR workflow and display.
- Check the actual delivery path. Review the result on a suitable display and, where relevant, verify the platform’s SDR fallback rather than assuming every viewer sees HDR.
Common misunderstandings
- “More stops always means a better image.” Stop counts depend on the camera and measurement method; lighting, exposure, noise and delivery matter too.
- “Log means HDR.” Log is a capture encoding choice. HDR describes a compatible grading, signal and display path.
- “Rec. 2020 means more dynamic range.” Rec. 2020 is a gamut/color-primaries component, not a brightness-range measurement.
- “HDR always looks brighter.” Appearance depends on the content, transfer function, display and playback conditions.
- “A scope decides the exposure.” A waveform shows signal levels, but the creative and technical exposure choice remains yours.
Where StreamNeo fits—and where it does not
Dynamic range affects how video is captured, graded and displayed. StreamNeo addresses a separate task: keeping uploaded videos running as a 24/7 YouTube live stream. It does not capture camera footage or change its dynamic range. For a prerecorded video channel, the workflow is to upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops it from the cloud.
Or let it run in the cloud
Nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
