For YouTube Live, start with the H.264 bitrate YouTube recommends for your resolution and frame rate, set CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval, then choose x264 or NVENC based on the headroom your computer has. x264 encodes on the CPU; NVENC uses dedicated encoding hardware on a compatible NVIDIA GPU. Neither is a universal image-quality winner: test both with the same content and settings if you need to compare them.
Recommended YouTube Live H.264 bitrates
Match the bitrate to the resolution and frame rate you actually send to YouTube. These are YouTube’s recommended H.264 ingestion bitrates, not independent measurements or guarantees of image quality. YouTube lists different recommendations for H.265 and AV1; do not use those figures for an H.264 stream. See YouTube’s live encoder settings for the current recommendations.
| Ingestion resolution and frame rate | Recommended H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p30 | 8 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps |
| 1440p30 | 21 Mbps |
| 1440p60 | 34 Mbps |
| 2160p30 | 42 Mbps |
| 2160p60 | 50 Mbps |
For example, if you send 1080p at 60 fps using H.264, use YouTube’s recommended 17 Mbps as your starting point. A higher resolution or frame rate is not automatically better: the source, motion, available upload capacity and ability to encode smoothly all matter.
Settings to use for YouTube H.264
YouTube’s live ingestion guidance specifies RTMP or RTMPS, H.264, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended keyframe interval of 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds. YouTube recommends up to 60 fps. Audio can use AAC or MP3. Set the video encoder and output resolution to match the bitrate row you selected, rather than choosing a bitrate based on the resolution of your source file alone.

- Rate control: CBR.
- Keyframe interval: 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Video codec: H.264 for the bitrate table above.
- Audio: AAC or MP3.
- Frame rate: YouTube recommends up to 60 fps.
Labels and menus vary by streaming application and version. In OBS, select the encoder in Settings > Output, then configure the stream output options there. Match the output resolution and frame rate in Settings > Video to the stream you intend to send. YouTube’s settings page is the authority for its current ingestion requirements.
x264 vs NVENC: which should you use?
| Factor | x264 | NVENC |
|---|---|---|
| Where encoding runs | Software encoding on the CPU. | Dedicated encoding hardware on a compatible NVIDIA GPU. |
| When it may fit | When the CPU has enough spare capacity for the chosen preset, resolution, frame rate and scene. | When reducing CPU encoding load is useful and compatible NVIDIA hardware is available. |
| Main constraint | More demanding presets use more CPU. If the system cannot keep up, encoding overload or skipped/distorted video can result. | Availability and performance depend on the GPU generation and settings; GPU contention can also matter. |
| Quality verdict | No universal winner established. | No universal winner established. |
OBS describes hardware encoding as shifting work from the CPU to a specialized GPU component. Its hardware-encoding guidance also cautions that earlier hardware generations may deliver lower quality at the same bitrate than x264 using the default veryfast preset. That is not a guarantee about every GPU, preset or scene. OBS’s x264 guide explains the trade-off between CPU use and compression work, but dates to 2017; its hardware-encoding guide dates to 2022. Treat those explanations as general guidance, not a current controlled head-to-head result. See OBS hardware encoding and OBS x264 streaming guidance.

For the actual “best” result, consider your particular CPU, NVIDIA GPU and generation, game or camera scene, motion, output resolution and frame rate, and whether encoding stays stable at the bitrate you can upload. A busy game, detailed foliage or rapid camera movement can reveal compression problems that a static desktop scene will not.
How to make a fair visual comparison
- Use the same source, scene, resolution, frame rate and bitrate for both encoders.
- Choose an x264 preset your CPU can sustain and an NVENC configuration supported by your GPU and streaming software.
- Include representative motion and audio, not only a static test screen.
- Check the resulting stream for detail loss, blockiness, skipped or distorted frames, audio issues and stream-health warnings.
- Prefer the configuration that delivers acceptable picture and stable encoding on your own system; do not infer a universal ranking from a single scene.
Leave upload headroom and test before going live
Your total stream bitrate must fit within available upload bandwidth. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload headroom, and notes that shared networks can reduce the capacity available to your stream. Download speed is not a substitute for upload speed, and connection interruptions can break a live stream. See YouTube’s streaming tips and encoder settings.

Test your outgoing upload capacity and use a reliable connection. Ethernet can avoid some Wi-Fi variability, but it cannot make an insufficient ISP upload plan adequate. Before the event, test the exact resolution, frame rate and encoder settings you plan to use, with representative movement and audio. During the stream, monitor YouTube’s stream health rather than assuming a configured bitrate means the stream is arriving cleanly.
Troubleshooting common stream problems
| Symptom | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Encoding overload, skipped frames or visibly distorted video | Encoder cannot sustain the selected preset, resolution and frame rate, especially with x264. | Reduce the encoding workload by choosing a less demanding x264 preset or lowering output resolution or frame rate, then test again. If compatible NVIDIA hardware is available, try NVENC to move encoding work off the CPU. |
| Stream health warnings or unstable delivery | Insufficient or inconsistent upload capacity, network sharing or connection disruptions. | Check outbound upload capacity, reduce the stream bitrate if needed, leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, and test on a more reliable connection. |
| Picture looks poor despite a stable stream | Bitrate may not match the selected H.264 resolution and frame rate, or the scene may be unusually complex or fast-moving. | Confirm the output matches the YouTube bitrate row. Compare encoders with the same source and settings, and test representative motion. |
| Keyframe or ingestion configuration issue | Stream settings do not match YouTube’s H.264 recommendations. | Use CBR, set a 2-second keyframe interval (never more than 4 seconds), and confirm the codec and audio format are supported by the current YouTube guidance. |
OBS NVENC settings: what not to overgeneralize
NVENC options depend on OBS version and GPU. OBS’s Advanced NVENC Options documentation is specifically for OBS 31.0 and is dated 2024-08-21. It describes an “Ultra High Quality” tuning option intended for live-action with artifacts such as camera sensor noise, says it is not recommended for gaming content, and notes that it significantly reduces throughput. It is a version-scoped option, not a universal recommended setting or current default. See OBS Advanced NVENC Options.
