If your YouTube RTMP stream keeps reconnecting, first find out whether the encoder, computer, or outbound internet connection is failing. Check YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health notices alongside your encoder logs and local recording; then adjust settings or connection capacity based on what those checks show. There is no single bitrate or stream-key reset that fixes every drop.
Diagnose the drop before changing settings
When the next reconnect happens, note its time and compare three signals: YouTube’s stream-health messages, the encoder’s output or logs, and a local recording if you are making one. This helps separate a problem in the produced video from a problem sending it to YouTube.
- Encoder error or unhealthy local output: Investigate the encoder, source routing, settings, and computer load.
- Healthy encoder preview and local recording, but a failed connection to YouTube: Suspect the outbound connection or a problem beyond the computer. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends testing the connection.
- Several viewers on separate connections report trouble: Check the encoder and stream-health messages; the issue may be in the stream rather than each viewer’s network.
Use the specific dashboard error and encoder log rather than treating every reconnect as the same failure. YouTube’s troubleshooting guide covers encoder and connection checks.
Rule out encoder and computer problems
Start with the feed your encoder is actually producing. Check whether audio and video remain clean in its preview, inspect CPU load during encoding, and review the local archive for missing frames, freezes, or other artifacts. A recording with the same defect points toward the source, settings, or system rather than only the connection to YouTube.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Update the encoder software and check that the selected input and output are the ones you intend to use.
- Watch CPU load while the stream is running. If the system is overloaded, reduce the encoding workload or simplify the scene and sources, then test again.
- Check the local recording for the same glitches seen by viewers. If it is also affected, investigate source routing and encoder settings.
- If the cause remains unclear, YouTube suggests trying a different encoder.
Test whether your upload connection can sustain the stream
Run an upload speed test, ideally under conditions similar to the planned broadcast. Compare the encoder’s total target bitrate with the upload the connection can reliably sustain—not just its best result in a single test. Leave room for normal variation and other household or office traffic. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate and choosing a quality level that is reliable for the available connection. If connection tests show problems, YouTube advises contacting your internet service provider.
A wired Ethernet connection is an optional diagnostic comparison: test it against Wi-Fi to see whether the local wireless path is contributing. It is not a guaranteed fix; the encoder, ISP, or wider outbound path could still be responsible.

Match encoder settings to YouTube’s ingest guidance
For YouTube’s current H.264 recommendations, the bitrate figures below describe video encoder settings. They are not a universal minimum internet speed, and a nominal connection speed does not guarantee it will sustain the stream. Choose a target that fits both the intended picture quality and the connection’s tested stability.
| H.264 output | YouTube video bitrate guidance |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps minimum; 17 Mbps recommended |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps minimum; 14 Mbps recommended |
| 720p at 60 fps | 3 Mbps minimum; 8 Mbps recommended |
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps minimum; 8 Mbps recommended |
These values come from YouTube Help’s live encoder settings guidance; the retrieved page does not display a publication year. YouTube also lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 as supported codecs for RTMP workflows, with frame rates up to 60 fps.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Rate control: Use constant bitrate (CBR), as YouTube specifies.
- Keyframes: Set a two-second interval; do not exceed four seconds.
- Transport: YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted extension to RTMP.
If the stream is unstable, lower the target bitrate or test a lower resolution or frame rate, then observe stream health under realistic network conditions. Do not raise quality just because a speed test briefly reports a high upload result.
Check the stream key only for a key or startup error
A stream key tells the encoder where to send the feed and allows YouTube to accept it, so treat it like a password. If a third-party encoder reports an error starting the stream that points to the key, get a new one in YouTube Live Control Room and update the encoder. YouTube says channel owners or managers can reset a key. Keep the existing key if there is no key-related error or security reason to replace it: rotating it is not a general remedy for a midstream network drop.

Rehearse the full setup and monitor stream health
Test with audio and movement similar to the actual broadcast. YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least two hours before an event and starting it at least 15 minutes beforehand. Check the Live Control Room preview before starting for viewers, confirm the local archive is being written, and keep monitoring stream health and quality during the stream.
If you rely on a backup encoder, test failover before the event. YouTube’s setup tips describe stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable to verify that the backup takes over. A backup is only useful if the switchover works in your actual configuration.

When HLS is—and is not—a relevant alternative
HLS is not a general-purpose cure for RTMP reconnects. YouTube documents it as an option for supported workflows such as HDR or codecs that RTMP does not support. HLS sends video in segments and has higher latency than a continuous RTMP stream, so use it only if your encoder and workflow support it and the latency trade-off fits. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance for the supported workflow details.
Common reconnect causes and what to check
| What you see | What to investigate | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Encoder reports a startup or stream-key error | Key or ingest configuration | Get a new key in Live Control Room and update the encoder if the error indicates the key is the problem. |
| Local preview or recording also glitches | Source, encoder settings, or computer load | Check routing and CPU load, update the encoder, and test with a simpler output or another encoder if needed. |
| Local output is clean but YouTube reports a connection issue | Upload capacity, connection stability, or outbound path | Test upload under realistic conditions, compare total target bitrate with sustainable capacity, and contact the ISP if tests show connection problems. |
| Problem appears on Wi-Fi but not during a wired comparison | Possible local wireless contribution | Use the more stable path if practical; Ethernet is a diagnostic option, not a guaranteed cure. |
