To repeat a single video in OBS, open its Media Source properties and turn on Loop. OBS leaves this setting off by default, so a file can reach its end without repeating. If the video loops but YouTube still ends the broadcast, check the encoder connection and YouTube’s live-stream controls; source playback and the broadcast are separate.
Loop one media file in OBS
- In OBS, select the scene containing the video.
- In the Sources panel, select the file’s Media Source. If you have not added it, choose +, then Media Source, and create or select the source.
- Open the source’s properties and enable Loop. Confirm that the correct media file is selected, then close the properties.
- Start playback and let it reach the end. The file should start again. OBS describes Loop as controlling whether the file plays again after playback completes; its documented default is off (OBS Media Sources).
OBS lists common video formats such as MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, and WebM, and audio formats such as MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV for Media Sources. The source is available on Windows, macOS, and Linux, according to OBS’s documentation.

Check settings that sound similar but do different things
- Loop repeats the file after it finishes.
- Show nothing when playback ends hides the source when playback completes. It does not make the file repeat.
- Restart playback when source becomes active restarts playback when the source becomes active—for example, when it is visible in the current scene. It does not control what happens at the end of playback.
- Close file when inactive unloads the file when the source is hidden or not on the current scene, which can save memory. OBS notes that showing it again may involve a short reload delay.
These are separate Media Source properties in OBS’s Media Sources documentation. For a video that should continuously repeat in the same scene, enable Loop and avoid mistaking the end-of-playback or source-activation options for it.
Use a playlist when you need more than one file
For a rotation of videos rather than one repeating clip, use OBS’s VLC Video source and enable Loop Playlist. OBS documents this option as on by default. The source relies on VLC libraries, so VLC must be installed; OBS specifies 64-bit VLC when using 64-bit OBS. See the OBS Media Sources documentation for the source requirements.

If the file loops but the YouTube broadcast ends
A Media Source finishing or repeating is not the same event as YouTube ending a live stream. OBS’s Loop setting governs local file playback. YouTube receives the encoder’s output, and its encoder guide says that stopping content from the encoder ends the stream. YouTube also provides Auto-start and Auto-stop controls that allow the encoder to start or stop streaming when enabled (Manage live stream settings; Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder).
- Watch OBS at the moment the file reaches its endpoint. Confirm the source begins playback again and OBS remains connected and streaming.
- If OBS stops sending output, check its connection to YouTube and whether the encoder output was stopped.
- In YouTube’s live-stream settings, review Auto-start and Auto-stop. Check that their current state matches how you intend the stream to start and end.
- If YouTube’s broadcast has ended, follow YouTube’s encoder and scheduled-stream controls to restart or end the stream as appropriate. YouTube’s guide describes clicking End Stream and stopping encoder output for a scheduled stream.
Without the scene setup, OBS logs, and stream settings for a particular case, the cause of an individual broadcast ending cannot be determined from the fact that a media file reached its endpoint alone.

Common problems and fixes
- The clip plays once and stops: Open the Media Source properties and enable Loop; it is off by default in OBS’s documentation.
- The source disappears at the end: Check Show nothing when playback ends. That option hides the source; it is not the repeat control.
- The clip starts over when shown, but not while it stays visible: Restart playback when source becomes active governs activation, not end-of-file playback. Enable Loop to repeat at the endpoint.
- A playlist does not load: Confirm VLC is installed and, for 64-bit OBS, that VLC is 64-bit. Use VLC Video’s Loop Playlist for playlist repetition.
- The video repeats, but YouTube says the stream ended: Check that OBS continues sending encoder output and review YouTube’s Auto-start and Auto-stop settings. Changing a media playback option will not by itself restore a disconnected or stopped broadcast.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a YouTube channel to keep playing uploaded videos without leaving OBS or a computer running at home, StreamNeo is a cloud option. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not stream from a camera.
