First check OBS Stats to see whether frames are being dropped due to network conditions, rendering lag, or encoding lag. Then compare the stream target with upload capacity and check YouTube Live Control Room for timestamped stream-health errors.
1. Identify what OBS says is failing
Capture the symptom before changing settings

Start a representative test stream—unlisted if appropriate—with audio and movement similar to your planned broadcast.

In OBS, open View > Stats. Record the values and note the time when bitrate falls or viewers report trouble.

Check which indicator changes: Dropped Frames (Network) points toward sending data over the connection; Rendering Lag points toward the computer failing to compose frames in time; Encoding Lag points toward the encoder not keeping up. A low or fluctuating bitrate alone does not distinguish these causes.

YouTube also recommends checking the encoder and CPU before concluding that the outbound connection is responsible. Its troubleshooting guide gives a useful order: YouTube live-stream troubleshooting.
2. Measure upload capacity under stream conditions
Compare upload—not download—to the stream target
Run an upload speed test while the household or office is using the connection as it normally would during the stream. Download speed does not tell you whether the outbound link can sustain the encoder’s bitrate. Other devices, cloud backups, video calls, and uploads can consume capacity that a speed test performed at a quiet time would otherwise show as available.
YouTube says the total stream bitrate cannot exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% of upload capacity unused as headroom. That is a platform recommendation, not a guarantee against brief network interruptions. YouTube’s streaming tips also caution that users sharing an office connection affect how much bandwidth is available to one streamer.

Reduce the target if capacity is marginal
If upload results are close to the stream target, fluctuate, or leave too little headroom, lower the encoder bitrate and test again. If needed, also reduce resolution or frame rate. There is no universal upload threshold that fits every stream: the suitable target depends on codec, resolution, frame rate, connection stability, and competing traffic.
3. Check YouTube’s stream-health messages
Open YouTube Live Control Room and inspect the stream-health indicator and timestamped error messages. Compare their times with the values you recorded in OBS Stats. YouTube checks the stream it receives, and its messages may identify incorrect bitrate or format configuration; fix a specific configuration error rather than treating every interruption as a network failure. The Live Control Room also provides live stream health and analytics.
Do not rely on viewer playback alone: buffering can reflect a viewer’s connection, while OBS and YouTube’s ingestion indicators help locate trouble earlier in the delivery path.

4. Verify that encoder settings fit the stream
Use YouTube’s current recommendations for your mode
YouTube’s recommended bitrate depends on ingestion codec, resolution, and frame rate. The examples below are recommended encoder settings from YouTube’s published guidance—not guaranteed minimum internet speeds. The official table also includes other modes and minimum values, so check it for the codec and format you actually use.

These figures are from YouTube’s live encoder settings. Recommendations can change; consult the current table rather than assuming a bitrate applies to every codec or stream.
Check rate control and keyframes

Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds; YouTube lists a maximum of 4 seconds.

Confirm that resolution, frame rate, codec, and target bitrate match the mode selected in YouTube’s guidance and that the target is sustainable on your measured connection.

5. Distinguish a network issue from a local workload issue
If OBS reports rendering or encoding lag
Investigate the computer and encoder before changing network hardware. Check CPU load, update or verify the encoder, and review whether local recordings show video or audio problems. Reduce demanding scene effects or encoding workload as appropriate, then repeat the same representative test and see whether the relevant OBS indicator improves.

If OBS reports network-dropped frames
Use the upload test and YouTube health messages to determine whether the outbound path is constrained or unstable. If capacity is shared, pause avoidable uploads and reduce competing use during a test. Change one factor at a time so you can tell whether the network indicator responds.
6. Test the physical connection only when evidence points there
If the symptoms point to network delivery, test with a known-good wired Ethernet connection if feasible, avoiding Wi-Fi variability. Compare OBS Stats and upload-test results under similar household load. A Cat 6 cable can be used as an optional known-good cable if you do not have one; it is not a YouTube requirement or a guaranteed fix.
If both wired and wireless tests show poor or unstable upload, collect the test results and timestamps of OBS and YouTube errors, then contact your internet service provider. YouTube’s guidance is direct: contact your ISP to troubleshoot when connection tests reveal an issue. Replace or upgrade a router only if testing implicates local network hardware.
