To restart a YouTube stream after OBS crashes, set up two separate recovery layers: enable OBS automatic reconnect for connection drops while OBS is still running, and use your operating system or a process supervisor to relaunch OBS if the application exits. Then check YouTube Live Control Room’s auto-start and auto-stop settings and verify the recovered feed. OBS’s automatic reconnect cannot reopen a crashed OBS process.
First identify what stopped
A stream can fail at three different layers, and each needs a different response:

- Encoder connection: OBS is open, but its connection to YouTube has dropped. OBS automatic reconnect is designed for this case.
- OBS process: OBS has exited or crashed. A separate operating-system automation or process supervisor must launch it again.
- YouTube broadcast state: The encoder feed may return, but whether YouTube starts or stops the broadcast depends in part on the Live Control Room’s auto-start and auto-stop settings.
Separate these layers in your setup and test them individually; reconnecting an encoder feed is not the same as restarting the application or controlling the broadcast lifecycle.
Set up OBS automatic reconnect for connection drops
- In OBS, open Settings → Advanced.
- Enable Automatic Reconnect.
- Choose a retry count and delay appropriate for your connection and use case.
- Apply the settings and test a brief connection interruption before relying on them during a production stream.
OBS documents this setting as a way for a running OBS instance to reconnect its stream output. There is no universal retry count or delay established for every connection: choose values for your situation and validate them. See the OBS Studio Overview Guide.

Arrange for OBS to relaunch after a crash
Automatic reconnect cannot help once OBS has exited. Configure an operating-system automation tool or process supervisor to start OBS again when its process ends. The exact setup varies by operating system and version; use instructions that match the computer running OBS, and test the behavior before an unattended stream.
Choose what happens at relaunch
Decide whether the automation should merely open OBS or open it and immediately attempt to stream. OBS documents the --startstreaming launch parameter for starting a stream as OBS launches. Review the OBS Launch Parameters documentation, then validate the startup behavior locally.

Windows launch detail
For a scheduled or automated Windows launch, set the task’s Start in working directory to the folder containing obs64.exe, as specified in OBS’s launch-parameter guidance. A launch that works when started manually may not behave the same way if its automated working directory is wrong.
Prevent unattended crash loops
Make sure repeated failures will not cause OBS to relaunch indefinitely without anyone noticing. Test with the actual profile and stream configuration, and retain a way to see whether the process is repeatedly exiting. The cited OBS guidance does not provide one supervisor recipe that applies to every Windows, macOS, and Linux version.

Check YouTube’s broadcast settings and stream key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and inspect the selected stream’s auto-start and auto-stop settings.
- Decide whether you want the encoder feed to start or stop the YouTube broadcast. YouTube says, “When these settings are on, you can start or stop streaming from your encoder.”
- If you reuse stream settings or copy a broadcast configuration, check these options again: reused settings copy the selections.
- If OBS relaunches but YouTube does not receive the stream, confirm the destination and copy the current stream key from Live Control Room into OBS.

Test each recovery path before depending on it
- Test connection recovery: With OBS running, create a controlled, brief connection interruption. Confirm OBS attempts to reconnect.
- Test process recovery: Close OBS in a controlled test and confirm your automation launches it. If configured, confirm
--startstreamingproduces the intended startup behavior. - Test YouTube behavior: Confirm the broadcast responds as expected when the encoder feed disappears and returns, given the selected auto-start and auto-stop settings.
- Verify the feed: In Live Control Room, check the health indicator and review timestamped warnings or errors. YouTube describes red errors as critical; they may prevent an event from starting or cause viewer problems.
OBS recommends testing settings before streaming. YouTube’s live streaming error messages guidance explains the health and error information to check.
