A resolution change alone does not explain washed-out color. First determine whether the problem is in the actual stream or only in its preview or on a viewer’s display. Then check whether you intend to stream SDR or HDR and make sure the source, encoder, color settings, stream-key protocol, and playback device agree.
First check where the color looks wrong
Do not diagnose the stream from the Live Control Room preview alone: YouTube says it does not show HDR colors. Check an actual playback endpoint instead. If possible, use an HDR-capable display with HDR enabled, select the stream’s highest available quality, and check whether YouTube identifies it as HDR. Devices without HDR support show the stream in SDR. YouTube’s HDR guidance explains these preview and playback differences.

- Only the preview looks washed out: It may not represent HDR playback accurately. Verify on a real playback device before changing encoder settings.
- Only one viewer or display sees it: Check that device’s HDR support and display settings; an SDR display will not show HDR output as HDR.
- The actual playback looks wrong on a capable HDR display: Check the intended format and the full source-to-encoder chain below.
Confirm whether the stream should be SDR or HDR
For ordinary SDR
Use Rec. 709 color settings. YouTube’s live encoder guidance identifies Rec. 709 for SDR and lists 8-bit SDR; do not enable HDR settings unless the source actually produces compatible HDR. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance covers color and video configuration.
For HDR
HDR is a complete workflow, not a resolution toggle. The source must produce compatible HDR, and the encoder must preserve the required codec, bit depth, color format, and HDR metadata. YouTube’s documented OBS setup calls for OBS 30.1 or later, a hardware HEVC encoder, Main 10 profile, P010 color format, and Rec. 2100 PQ or HLG color space; YouTube recommends HLG. Confirm that your particular source and encoder support these options before selecting them. See YouTube’s HDR setup requirements.

- 【Package Content & Note】 1x HD Audio Capture Card , 1x USB 3.0 to USB C Adapter (A-side 3.0, B-side 2.0), 1x user manual. Please note that you need to restart the OBS Studio software after the audio setup is complete, otherwise it will result in no sound output. When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
If your camera, game, or other source is SDR, selecting HDR output settings will not turn it into genuine HDR. Likewise, settings that do not match the source’s metadata can produce incorrect color. YouTube warns that incorrect color-space marking can cause oversaturation and shifted hues; those are possible symptoms, not proof of the cause in your setup.
Check stream-key and encoder settings
- Confirm the stream key matches the intended workflow. For HDR over HLS, YouTube requires an HLS stream key. Follow YouTube’s HLS setup guidance.
- For HDR over HLS, leave “Turn on manual resolution” unchecked. This is a specific YouTube instruction for that workflow.
- Verify the encoder’s HDR settings together. For YouTube’s documented OBS HDR procedure, check HEVC, Main 10, P010, and Rec. 2100 PQ or HLG—not one setting in isolation.
- For SDR, verify Rec. 709. Keep the source and encoder in the SDR workflow rather than mixing SDR source material with HDR metadata.
- Change one setting at a time and retest. Compare the same content at the same quality on the same playback device. Otherwise, transcoding, device HDR support, or display settings can make it difficult to tell what changed.
Resolution and other encoder settings
A resolution change can coincide with a color change, but it does not by itself identify a color-format problem. Check color space, transfer function, bit depth, codec, and source compatibility alongside resolution. For general live encoding, YouTube lists frame rates up to 60 fps and recommends a 2-second keyframe interval; do not exceed 4 seconds. Use YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrate, and resolution guidance for the rest of the configuration, since appropriate settings depend on the selected resolution and workflow.

If viewers are seeing SDR from an HDR stream
That can be expected when a playback device does not support HDR. Check the quality menu and test on an HDR-capable device with HDR enabled before concluding that the encoded stream has lost its color. The Live Control Room preview is also not a reliable HDR-color reference.
YouTube notes that its automated HDR-to-SDR conversion can produce good results, but may not be perfect on challenging clips. Its discussion of a 3D LUT hint concerns HDR uploads; it is not a direct Live-stream setting. Read YouTube’s HDR upload and conversion guidance.

Troubleshooting by symptom
| What you see | What to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Washed-out color only in Live Control Room preview | The preview does not show HDR colors. | Check actual playback on an HDR-capable device with HDR enabled. |
| Stream appears SDR on a particular device | The device may not support HDR or HDR may not be enabled. | Test on a known HDR-capable playback device and check the quality menu for the HDR label. |
| Color is wrong in actual playback after switching resolution | Whether the stream is intended to be SDR or HDR; whether the source and encoder color settings match. | For SDR, verify Rec. 709. For HDR, verify the full compatible source and encoder chain rather than changing one setting alone. |
| HDR color looks oversaturated or hues appear shifted | Whether the color space is marked correctly and matches the source. | Check the source metadata and encoder color-space settings; YouTube identifies incorrect marking as one possible cause. |
| HDR over HLS does not behave as expected | Stream-key type and manual-resolution setting. | Use an HLS stream key and leave “Turn on manual resolution” unchecked. |
| HDR-to-SDR playback looks imperfect on difficult footage | YouTube’s automatic conversion may not produce a perfect result on challenging clips. | Keep in mind that YouTube’s 3D LUT hint guidance is for uploads, not a direct Live setting. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a continuous YouTube stream from uploaded videos, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The service loops uploaded video; it does not stream from a camera. Nothing has to stay on at home, and there is no need to keep a computer or home connection running. Each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot. StreamNeo can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; one free day is available per account. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. This is a different use case from diagnosing color in a live camera or desktop capture: the stream plays uploaded videos, so check that your files are prepared for the intended SDR or HDR playback workflow.
