YouTube Live Stream Keeps Reconnecting on Ubuntu? Check OBS Logs, System Logs and RTMPS

When an Ubuntu OBS stream keeps reconnecting, correlate the OBS log, system journal and YouTube Live health before changing bitrate, network or RTMPS settings.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If an OBS stream on Ubuntu repeatedly disconnects and reconnects, start by matching the failure time in the OBS log, Ubuntu’s journal and YouTube Live Control Room. The symptom alone does not identify the cause: common branches include an unstable upload path or bitrate, a local network event, an encoder setting flagged by YouTube, or an RTMPS endpoint problem.

Capture the failure time and preserve the right logs

Note the disconnect time and your timezone. You need the same time window in each log to distinguish a coincidental system message from an event that may be related.

Open the OBS log for the affected session

  1. In OBS, choose Help → Log Files, then open the current or previous log for the session that failed. If available, use the in-app option to upload the log when sharing it for help.
  2. If you need to locate files manually, the common Linux path is ~/.config/obs-studio/logs. It can differ by package or build, including Flatpak or Snap installations; prefer the in-app menu if this directory is absent.
  3. Before posting a log publicly, remove or redact stream keys and other credentials.

Look around the failure timestamp for “Disconnected,” “Reconnecting,” RTMP send errors, timeouts, dropped-frame counts, output stopping, and any interface or error-counter details. Read the surrounding entries, not just one error line. A connection that starts successfully and later reports send errors points to a different diagnostic branch from an immediate connection or TLS error, but neither pattern proves a cause on its own. The OBS Project’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide, dated 2024-09-30, explains that intermittent disconnections and dropped frames indicate a network issue between the computer and remote ingest server; software or hardware interference can also matter.

Query Ubuntu’s journal around the same time

For recent entries, run:

journalctl --since "30 minutes ago" --no-pager
journalctl -k --since "30 minutes ago" --no-pager

The first command shows journal entries available to your user; the second narrows the query to kernel messages. To inspect a known incident more precisely, substitute its time and add an end time, for example:

journalctl --since "2026-10-03 14:20:00" --until "2026-10-03 14:40:00" --no-pager

Search for network link down/up events, driver resets, firmware errors, suspend/resume events, and system-overload indicators. Compare their timestamps with OBS. A message at the same time is a lead to investigate, not proof that it caused the reconnect. Ubuntu’s Jammy journalctl manual documents the query options; logging details can vary by Ubuntu release and setup.

Check traditional log files if your system has them

Ubuntu documents /var/log/syslog as a general system log and /var/log/kern.log as a kernel log. These files may not exist or contain the same data on every installation. If present, inspect the incident window with a pager or search tool, such as less /var/log/syslog or grep with a time-related term. A missing or empty file does not establish that no system event occurred; check the journal as well. See Ubuntu’s Linux log files guide.

Read the OBS symptoms alongside YouTube’s stream health

Open the stream in YouTube Live Control Room and compare its health messages with the OBS and Ubuntu timestamps. YouTube’s health information can flag insufficient incoming video, bitrate, codec, frame rate, keyframe interval, and primary/backup stream mismatches. Follow the specific message shown rather than changing several encoder settings at once.

Evidence at the failure time Branch to investigate Next check
OBS dropped-frame counter rises before reconnect Upload path instability or bitrate above sustainable capacity Try a lower bitrate and wired connection; then isolate VPN, firewall, router, or ISP issues.
OBS connects, then reports send errors and reconnects Connection interruption after initial setup Correlate system and interface logs; inspect the full OBS log.
Immediate SSL, certificate, or timeout error RTMPS URL, protocol, port, TLS support, or endpoint configuration Copy the current RTMPS URL and key from Live Control Room; confirm the encoder supports RTMPS and port 443 is permitted.
YouTube reports codec, bitrate, keyframe, resolution, or stream mismatch Encoder or output configuration Apply the recommendation in the relevant YouTube health message and check health again.
Local preview or recording is poor, or CPU load is high Encoder, capture source, or machine load Check encoder version, CPU load, and routed audio/video sources; compare with a local recording.
System logs show a link flap or driver reset at the same time Possible NIC, cable, router, or driver issue Test another cable or port and compare with another connection; timing alone does not prove causation.

YouTube’s live streaming troubleshooting guidance separates encoder/source quality from outbound internet problems. Its encoder error guidance includes H.264 video and AAC audio for standard live ingestion and warns about primary/backup stream mismatches. For more detail on health-message meanings, consult the YouTube Live Stream health status reference.

Test the Ubuntu network path one change at a time

  • Use wired Ethernet as a test. OBS recommends a wired connection because Wi-Fi may be unstable. If the stream stabilizes over Ethernet, investigate the wireless path rather than assuming OBS itself is defective.
  • Reduce bitrate to a sustainable level. A peak speed-test result is not a guarantee of stable upload capacity. OBS offers 75% of total upload speed as a general starting rule of thumb, not a YouTube guarantee. YouTube likewise recommends choosing quality the connection can reliably sustain and testing upload speed. See the OBS connection guide and YouTube encoder settings and troubleshooting.
  • Test VPN or security-software interference carefully. Temporarily disconnect a VPN or isolate firewall/security software only as a diagnostic test. Restore protection afterward; create a narrow application exception only if the evidence supports it.
  • Try another ingest server if OBS offers one. If the router has wider connectivity problems, a reboot may help. If local checks do not resolve the issue, OBS and YouTube guidance point to the ISP as a sensible next contact.
  • Do not copy Windows-only OBS network advice as Ubuntu instructions. OBS identifies network optimization and TCP pacing options in its guide as Windows-only. IP-family or bind options may vary by Linux build and interface, so verify that a control is present before relying on it.

Dynamic bitrate, if available in your setup, may trade image quality for fewer drops; it does not repair an unstable connection. Change one variable at a time and note whether the failure rate or YouTube health message changes.

Verify RTMPS when connection or SSL errors appear

YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP. If the OBS log reports an SSL error, timeout, or immediate connection failure, open the current stream settings in Live Control Room and copy the endpoint and stream key again instead of relying on an old saved URL. Confirm that the chosen OBS output supports RTMPS.

YouTube’s encoder settings guidance says the RTMPS URL should be used and that port 443 may need to be explicit for SSL errors. The YouTube RTMPS ingestion reference specifies TLS on port 443 and explains that the server hostname is needed for SNI authentication. Use the exact current endpoint YouTube provides; do not substitute a guessed URL. A stale stream key is a separate possibility if the encoder reports an error at startup: YouTube’s troubleshooting guide recommends copying the current key.

Common reconnect problems and practical fixes

  • Reconnects follow rising dropped frames: reduce the bitrate, try wired Ethernet, and test for VPN, firewall, router, or ISP interference.
  • OBS fails immediately with SSL or timeout errors: re-copy the current RTMPS URL and key, verify RTMPS support, and check that outbound port 443 is not blocked.
  • YouTube reports a format or health error: adjust only the setting implicated by the health message, then observe whether the message clears.
  • Ubuntu reports interface or driver events at the same time: test another cable, router port, or network path; consider driver and firmware investigation if the event recurs.
  • Logs show no obvious local event, but the stream still drops: an empty local log does not rule out an upstream routing or ISP problem. Compare another connection and contact the ISP if the issue persists after local checks.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a 24/7 YouTube channel built from uploaded videos, rather than a live camera/OBS production, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. It streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. This is for prerecorded uploads and playlists, not going live from a camera. Start a free StreamNeo day.
