A YouTube Live 403 does not point to one universal fault. If an app shows an API error, first capture its full reason and identify the failed operation; YouTube assigns different 403 causes to different API actions. If the stream simply disconnects without an API explanation, check the stream key, encoder output, Live Control Room diagnostics and upload connection—in that order.
First identify which kind of 403 you have
Separate an API authorization or broadcast-state error from a delivery problem. The HTTP status alone cannot tell you that the network is failing: YouTube’s Live Streaming API error reference lists operation-specific 403 reasons, while its encoder troubleshooting guidance covers stream-key and connection problems.

If encoder software shows an API response
- Save the complete error reason and detail, not just “403.”
- Note what the software was trying to do: create, list, bind or update a broadcast or stream, or transition a broadcast.
- Use that operation and reason to choose the relevant check below. Avoid repeatedly retrying a failed action before checking the broadcast and stream state.
If the stream disconnects without an API reason
Continue with the delivery checks below. A viewer-facing interruption by itself does not establish that an API 403 occurred.
For API 403 errors, check channel access and broadcast state
Confirm the authorized account and live eligibility
Insufficient permissions, disabled live streaming and blocked live permissions are among the API’s documented 403 causes. Confirm that the encoder is authorized for the intended Google account and YouTube channel, and check whether live streaming is available on that channel. YouTube says live streaming requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions during the preceding 90 days; its eligibility guidance also sets a minimum age of 16. Check the current broadcast and stream state
A 403 can also indicate that a requested broadcast transition is invalid for its current state, is redundant, or that the stream is inactive. Inspect the broadcast and its bound stream in the software or API workflow. Resolve the state mismatch before trying the same transition again.
For encoder startup or connection errors, refresh the stream key
In YouTube Live Control Room, retrieve the stream key for the intended stream, then update the key in your third-party encoder and reconnect. YouTube recommends this when encoder software cannot start or connect. If the software signs in to YouTube directly rather than using a stream key, YouTube advises contacting that software’s support team.

Treat a stream key like a password: do not share it or include it in screenshots or public logs. YouTube’s troubleshooting instructions and stream settings guidance explain the relevant workflow.
Use Live Control Room to diagnose ingest errors
Check the stream health indicator in Live Control Room. It reports errors with timestamps; use the named diagnostic to target the fix rather than changing unrelated encoder settings. YouTube lists format, bitrate, audio, video, keyframe-frequency and resolution problems among possible stream errors.

- Format: For the configuration described in YouTube’s guidance, use H.264 video and AAC audio.
- Keyframes: Check that keyframe frequency is set in line with the frame rate, as YouTube’s guidance specifies.
- Other settings: Correct the bitrate, audio, video or resolution setting identified by the health message. Do not assume every disconnect has the same encoder cause.

Determine whether the encoder or the network is failing
Check encoder health first
Look at the encoder’s preview and, where available, the stream archive. Check whether picture and sound are healthy, whether the encoder reports errors and whether CPU load is unusually high. If the local output is already faulty, troubleshoot the encoder and its settings before blaming the internet connection.

Check outbound upload stability and headroom
If the encoder output looks healthy, test the connection’s outbound upload stability. YouTube recommends leaving 20% bandwidth headroom beyond the upload requirement, accounting for the primary and backup stream bitrates. This is YouTube’s recommendation, not a guarantee that a stream will never drop; connection disruptions can interrupt a live stream. If a connection test shows a problem, contact your ISP.
