Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →OBS usually appears to skip a video because the playlist order is randomized, the source stops and restarts when it becomes hidden and visible, or a particular media item cannot play. For multiple files, use VLC Video and check its shuffle, loop, and visibility settings; use Media Source to repeat a single file. These OBS playback behaviors are separate from YouTube Live’s delivery of the outgoing stream.
First, identify what “playlist” means
Here, a playlist is the collection of videos OBS plays as media sources. YouTube’s HLS documentation also uses “playlist” for a rolling list of stream segments used to deliver a live stream. That HLS playlist is not the list of local videos you are rotating in an OBS scene.

OBS’s official Media Sources guide, dated January 11, 2022, distinguishes its sources this way: “Unlike Media Source, you can create a playlist of items, similar to an Image Slideshow.” Read the OBS Media Sources guide. YouTube’s HLS documentation describes the delivery protocol, not how OBS rotates video files: YouTube HLS ingestion guide.

Match the OBS source to what you want to play
| Goal | OBS source or setting | Expected behavior |
|---|---|---|
| Repeat one video | Media Source; enable Loop | Repeats that file. |
| Play multiple files in list order | VLC Video; turn Shuffle off; enable Loop Playlist if you want the list to repeat | Plays the items in order, then starts over if looping is enabled. |
| Randomize multiple files | VLC Video; turn Shuffle on | Randomizes the file order; the next item is not predictable from list position. |
| Keep a playlist’s place when its source is hidden | VLC Video visibility behavior: pause/unpause or always play | Avoids the default stop-and-restart behavior while the source is hidden. |
VLC Video requires VLC to be installed. The OBS guide specifies that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. If the VLC Video source is missing or does not behave as expected, check both installation and architecture in the OBS guide.

Why a video can seem to be skipped
Shuffle is changing the order
With Shuffle enabled, VLC Video randomizes the media files instead of following the list from top to bottom. A video that does not appear when expected may simply be later in that randomized sequence. Turn Shuffle off when you need a predictable order.
The source is restarting after it becomes visible
VLC Video’s default visibility behavior is “Stop when not visible, restart when visible.” If you switch scenes or toggle the source’s eye icon, OBS can stop playback while the source is hidden and start it again when it reappears. That can make a clip seem to have been skipped or make the playlist restart, even though the outgoing YouTube broadcast has not ended.

Choose pause/unpause if the video should hold its place while hidden and resume when shown, or always play if it should continue advancing in the background. The OBS Sources Guide explains source visibility behavior. OBS’s source code also associates stop/restart with source deactivation and activation; that is a media-source behavior, not evidence that the live broadcast itself stopped: OBS source code.

A file may be inaccessible or fail to play
If playback repeatedly stops at the same entry, check that the file path and filename are correct, then try the file directly in VLC. A 2019 OBS forum reply suggested checking VLC messages for a file error in one user’s large shuffled playlist, but that community discussion does not establish a universal cause: OBS forum discussion.

A live playlist edit may restart playback in some setups
An OBS forum user reported in 2020 that adding a Media Source or a video to a VLC Video playlist during a YouTube Live session reset playback to the first video: OBS forum report. This is an individual report, not proof that every live edit resets playback or that it is a rule in current OBS versions. Test edits in a private or otherwise non-critical session before relying on them during a public broadcast.
Troubleshoot in this order
- Confirm the source type. Use VLC Video for a playlist of multiple items. Use Media Source for one file that should repeat, and check its Loop option.
- Check order and looping. In VLC Video, turn Shuffle off for list order. Enable Loop Playlist if the sequence should start again after its final item.
- Check visibility behavior. If a scene switch or eye-icon toggle hides the source, change its stop/restart behavior to pause/unpause or always play, depending on whether playback should pause or continue in the background.
- Test suspect entries separately. Verify each path and filename and open the file directly in VLC. If the playlist fails at the same entry, inspect VLC diagnostics and try a smaller playlist made up of files known to play. This isolates a possible file problem; it does not prove a general OBS defect.
- Verify VLC installation and architecture. Install VLC if it is absent, and match its architecture to OBS; for 64-bit OBS, the OBS guide calls for 64-bit VLC.
- Separate live edits from normal rotation. If the problem only happens when you add or remove an item during a broadcast, test that change separately in your own OBS version and configuration.
