If your YouTube live stream disconnects just as your VPN reconnects, start by checking OBS’s network binding, then test once with the VPN temporarily disabled. A VPN can make the route to YouTube’s ingest server unstable, but the timing alone does not prove which VPN setting is responsible. Work through the checks below before changing protocols or endpoints.
Why does my YouTube stream disconnect when my VPN reconnects?
OBS says VPN software may result in an unstable connection to the streaming server. When a VPN reconnects, the network route used by OBS may change or briefly be interrupted; if OBS cannot maintain its connection to YouTube’s ingest server, the broadcast can go offline. This is a likely line of investigation, not a guaranteed diagnosis.

Dropped frames are a useful clue: OBS explains that they indicate an unstable connection or one that cannot sustain the configured bitrate. If enough frames are dropped, the stream may disconnect. OBS sends the stream from your computer directly to the streaming service; it does not relay your video itself. See the OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide.
Troubleshoot the VPN reconnect in OBS
- Record what happens. Note whether OBS reports dropped frames or a disconnection, when the VPN reconnects, and whether the failure occurs immediately. This pattern helps distinguish a route interruption from a stream that is consistently exceeding the available upload capacity.
- Set OBS’s network binding to Default. In OBS, open Settings → Advanced → Network. Set Bind to IP to Default, then apply the change. OBS lists this as a connection troubleshooting step.
- Test with the VPN temporarily disabled. Stream again without the VPN and observe whether the connection remains stable. If it does, the VPN path is implicated, but this test does not identify a particular VPN option as the fix. Consider the privacy and security implications before streaming without your VPN.
- Check the connection and bitrate if the problem persists. If OBS disconnects even with the VPN off, investigate the computer’s connection to the ingest service and whether the connection can sustain the bitrate configured in OBS. OBS is very unlikely to be the cause of dropped frames; the network path and stream settings are more relevant first checks.
What to try if the VPN is the trigger
After confirming that the stream is stable without the VPN, look for routing or split-tunneling options in the VPN client for your specific operating system and version. The goal is to determine whether OBS can keep a stable route to YouTube while other traffic follows your preferred VPN policy. Exact settings vary by client, and there is no single routing recipe that applies to every VPN.

- Check whether the VPN client offers a way to keep OBS’s connection on a consistent route across reconnects.
- Review what traffic would bypass the VPN if you use split tunneling, including the privacy or security trade-offs.
- Change one setting at a time, then repeat the same OBS stream test so you can tell whether the change affects the failure.
On Windows, OBS also offers Network Optimizations and TCP pacing under Settings → Advanced → Network. OBS describes these as optional troubleshooting settings that some users report can help, not as guaranteed VPN fixes. Dynamic bitrate adjustment can lower bitrate during congestion, but OBS cautions that it does not resolve the underlying connection problem and can reduce video quality.
Should you change YouTube’s ingest protocol or server?
Not as the first response to a VPN reconnect. YouTube supports multiple ingest protocols, including RTMPS, and OBS lists YouTube RTMPS endpoints. That availability does not establish that switching protocol or changing between primary and backup endpoints will fix a route interruption on your computer. First test the OBS binding and VPN path; only investigate a protocol change when you have a separate reason to do so.

For details on supported YouTube live ingest protocols, consult Google’s YouTube ingestion protocol documentation. OBS’s configured YouTube endpoints are listed in its RTMP services configuration; that file can change over time.
