To fix a poor live stream, first check OBS’s Stats window and identify which counter is rising. Network dropped frames point to the connection between OBS and the platform; rendering or encoding lag points to system performance. Viewer buffering is a separate problem and can happen even when your stream is reaching the platform cleanly. Match the fix to the symptom, then test the complete setup before an important broadcast.
Diagnose the problem in OBS before changing settings
In OBS Studio, open View > Stats and watch the counters during a representative part of your stream. The exact labels can vary by OBS version, but distinguish network drops from rendering and encoding delays before adjusting bitrate or video quality.

- Network dropped frames: OBS is discarding frames because the connection to the remote streaming server is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. This is usually a connection-path issue, not a fault in OBS itself. OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting
- Rendering lag: OBS cannot render frames quickly enough, often because the GPU is overloaded with the game, other apps, or complex scenes.
- Encoding lag or “encoding overloaded”: The system cannot encode the stream at the selected settings quickly enough. This is a performance problem; lowering bitrate alone may not solve it. See OBS Encoding Performance Troubleshooting.
- Viewer buffering without OBS drops: Your outgoing stream may be stable while a viewer’s device, connection, or location struggles to play it. OBS discusses this separately in its Stream Buffering Troubleshooting guide.
If more than one counter rises, address each bottleneck separately. Do not treat every stutter as a bitrate problem.

If the network dropped-frame counter is climbing, compare your configured bitrate with both the platform’s current ingest limits and the upload speed your connection can sustain consistently. A speed test is a snapshot; Wi-Fi interference, other household traffic, ISP congestion, and route quality can all make actual upload performance less stable.

1. Leave upload headroom
OBS suggests using 75% of total upload speed as a starting point when estimating a stream bitrate. Treat that as guidance, not a guarantee: a connection may fluctuate, and other devices or applications may use upload bandwidth. Choose a bitrate that leaves room for those changes rather than setting it at the highest speed a test briefly reports. OBS’s connection guide
2. Try another ingest server or service
If your platform lets you choose an ingest server, test another one. For Twitch on Windows, OBS points to TwitchTest as a way to identify a server with a better quality score. You can also test a different streaming service: if the stream works there, that suggests a service-specific route or ingest issue, but does not itself repair the original route. Twitch’s Broadcasting Guidelines search-result summary also identifies network problems, excessive bitrate for the connection, and router problems as possible causes; check Twitch’s current guidance directly for detailed settings.
3. Test with Ethernet if you are using Wi-Fi
A wired Ethernet connection is a useful diagnostic when Wi-Fi is unstable. It removes wireless interference and signal strength as variables, but it cannot fix every router, ISP, congestion, or routing problem. Try existing equipment first; buying a cable or replacing a router is not a universal cure.

4. Check software, drivers, and network equipment
Temporarily test whether a VPN, security application, or bundled network-optimization feature is interfering. OBS names Lenovo Vantage Network Boost and Killer NIC software as examples. If disabling a feature changes the result, configure it appropriately and restore suitable security protection rather than leaving protection off. Check for current network drivers from your computer or motherboard manufacturer, and restart the modem and router if there may be a connectivity issue. If the problem persists, ask your ISP whether there is a route or congestion issue.
5. Use dynamic bitrate only as a fallback
OBS can lower bitrate dynamically when the connection cannot keep up. This may reduce network drops, but it can also reduce picture quality and does not fix the underlying connection problem. Use it as a fallback if stability matters more than maintaining a fixed visual quality.
What does “encoding overloaded” mean?
It means OBS or the system is struggling to render or encode the stream at the selected workload. OBS uses GPU resources to compose scenes as well as render output, so a GPU-heavy game or other demanding application can leave too little capacity for streaming. Follow this performance branch rather than changing network settings. OBS Encoding Performance Troubleshooting

Free GPU capacity for OBS
- Close or reduce other GPU-heavy applications.
- If streaming a game, cap its frame rate to your monitor’s refresh rate or enable V-Sync; lower the game’s graphics settings if needed.
- On Windows, try running OBS as administrator. OBS says this can reserve GPU capacity for OBS in many cases; it is not a guaranteed fix.
Reduce the work OBS must do
- Lower the stream’s output resolution or frame rate. If 60 fps is failing, try 30 fps.
- Simplify scenes and sources. Limit expensive video and browser sources, use smaller source dimensions, and temporarily disable costly filters or overlays to find out whether one is contributing.
- Lowering the base canvas resolution is a bigger change: it can require repositioning or resizing sources and revising scene layouts.
A hardware encoder, a new computer, or one particular setting is not a guaranteed solution. First identify the workload causing the performance trouble and reduce it.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat bitrate should I use for streaming?
There is no single best bitrate for every platform and setup. Choose one your stable upload can sustain, stay within the destination platform’s current ingest requirements, and account for encoder headroom and the viewers you want to reach. Higher resolution and frame rate can require more bitrate and system resources; reducing them can trade detail or smoothness for reliability and easier playback.
YouTube’s help page, Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions, currently displays the following recommended bitrates. These are YouTube ingestion recommendations, not universal Twitch or cross-platform settings; the retrieved page shows no publication date, so verify its current guidance before a broadcast.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why is my stream buffering for viewers?
Viewer buffering does not necessarily mean you are dropping frames. A viewer’s internet connection, device, or location may be the limiting factor. If your OBS network and performance counters are healthy but viewers still report buffering, consider a lower bitrate, resolution, or frame rate to make playback more accessible, especially if your platform does not provide transcoding options for your audience. This trades some visual quality or motion smoothness for easier playback. OBS’s viewer-buffering guide

- Check the platform’s current requirements. Confirm accepted codecs, bitrate limits, keyframe interval, and any stream-key or ingest instructions for the destination. Requirements can differ by platform and change over time.
- Match the stream to stable capacity. Test upload performance, leave headroom, and choose a resolution and frame rate your connection and computer can handle together.
- Use the platform’s encoder guidance. YouTube currently recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds, in its live encoder settings guidance. Verify the current instructions for your platform rather than treating these as universal settings.
- Run a representative test. Include the real audio, scene transitions, overlays, game or other motion, and encoder settings. Monitor OBS Stats and the platform’s stream-health indicators during the test.
- Change one variable at a time. If the test fails, change the setting that corresponds to the rising counter, then test again. This makes it easier to tell whether a fix helped.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a stable OBS Stats window guarantee every viewer will have smooth playback?
No. OBS can show a clean outgoing stream while an individual viewer buffers because of their device, connection, or location.
Can I use the YouTube bitrate recommendations on Twitch?
Not automatically. Check the destination platform’s current encoder and ingest requirements; the YouTube figures apply to YouTube guidance, not every service.
