Check whether the encoder provider stopped its job or YouTube stopped receiving the feed, then ask the provider how its sessions expire and restart. YouTube’s 12-hour automatic archive rule is about recordings—not encoder session duration.
First, identify which connection stopped
A YouTube live stream depends on a feed reaching YouTube from an encoder. YouTube’s setup uses a server URL and stream key; the cloud encoder provider separately controls the session or job that sends that feed. If the provider’s session ends, reusing a valid YouTube stream key does not, by itself, establish that the provider’s session has restarted.

- Check the cloud encoder’s job or session state. Look for an ended, expired, failed, or disconnected status in the provider’s dashboard or logs. The exact labels and renewal behavior depend on the service.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room. Inspect the preview, stream health, and any status error. YouTube says stream status can show specific errors and instructions. YouTube streaming tips and troubleshoot live stream errors.
- Compare the timestamps. If the provider reports its job ended before YouTube reported an ingest problem, that points toward a provider-side session or job issue. If the encoder is still sending but YouTube reports an ingest error, investigate the connection details and YouTube’s error guidance.
These checks help locate the failure boundary; they do not prove a particular provider’s timeout policy. YouTube’s published instructions do not establish the session lifetime or renewal method for an unnamed third-party cloud encoder.

The YouTube guidance covered here describes connecting an encoder with a YouTube Live server URL and stream key. It also documents auto-start and auto-stop settings, but does not describe those controls as renewing a third-party encoder’s expired cloud session. YouTube recommends RTMPS; its guidance does not say that RTMPS, RTMP, or HLS prevents an external provider from expiring or stopping its job. See YouTube stream settings and encoder settings.

So there is no documented YouTube-side keepalive switch to turn on for this specific problem. A provider might offer its own persistent-job, renewal, or automatic-restart control, but that must be confirmed in that provider’s documentation or with its support team.
What to check with the cloud encoder provider
Ask the vendor for concrete answers before relying on a long-running stream. Record the provider’s exact response and the plan or configuration it applies to.

- How long can one encoder session or job run, and does the limit differ by plan?
- Does the service renew a session automatically, or must a user restart it?
- What happens after an idle period, a network interruption, or a YouTube ingest disconnect?
- Does an automatic restart reuse the same YouTube stream key, and does it require a new Live Control Room action?
- Are there persistent-job, keepalive, reconnect, or restart settings? Where are they configured?
- Can the provider show job history or logs that distinguish an expired session from a YouTube ingest error?
Without the provider’s identity and current documentation, its session duration, keepalive options, and restart behavior cannot be stated reliably.

- Open YouTube Live Control Room and select the stream’s current setup details.
- Copy the current YouTube stream key and server URL into the cloud encoder, following that provider’s instructions. YouTube describes the key as the credential that routes the encoder feed to the stream. YouTube encoder settings.
- If the encoder reports an error starting, YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends copying the current key from Live Control Room into the encoder. Do not assume that changing the key renews an expired provider session; it addresses connection details, not a documented provider-side timeout.
- For a scheduled stream, preview the feed in Live Control Room and use its Go live control when the setup calls for it. YouTube’s setup steps are in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
Test monitoring and failover before relying on the stream
YouTube recommends testing the setup, previewing before going live, monitoring quality, and testing a backup encoder by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet connection. For a cloud encoder, adapt the test to the controls the provider actually exposes: verify what happens if its job is interrupted, how quickly it reconnects or restarts, and whether YouTube requires another action.

- Run a test stream and confirm that the encoder reports an active job while YouTube receives a healthy feed.
- Review both provider-side job history and YouTube Live Control Room status during any interruption.
- Test the documented recovery path rather than assuming that a stream key or protocol change will renew a session.
- Keep a known recovery route available for streams where an interruption matters.
Do not confuse the 12-hour archive rule with a session timeout
YouTube says, “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived,” in its encoder setup guidance. That is an archive threshold, not a stated cloud encoder session lifetime and not evidence that a keepalive can extend a session. A stream ending near a provider’s timeout must be investigated through that provider’s session policy, not inferred from YouTube’s archive rule.
