If your YouTube live stream drops frames on a low-cost Indian VPS, first check which OBS counter is rising. “Dropped frames” points to a connection or bitrate-delivery problem; it does not, by itself, prove that the VPS CPU is overloaded. Check OBS statistics and YouTube stream health, then reduce video bitrate to a level the VPS can sustain. Lower resolution or frame rate if needed, and retest with a representative workload.
Identify which frames are being lost
OBS distinguishes network delivery from rendering and encoding performance. Treat those indicators as separate symptoms rather than using “dropped frames” as a catch-all diagnosis.

- Dropped frames: OBS defines these as a connection to the remote server that is unstable or a configured bitrate the connection cannot sustain. This is a network-delivery symptom, not proof of CPU overload. See the OBS Project troubleshooting guide.
- Missed frames due to rendering lag: Check whether OBS is struggling to render the scene. A network bitrate change alone may not address this counter.
- Skipped frames due to encoding lag: This points to encoding work that is not completing on time. On a VPS, investigate the actual CPU usage, quota, or throttling alongside OBS logs.
Record the exact OBS indicator and when it rises. Then check YouTube’s stream-health messages for warnings about bitrate, codec, keyframe frequency, or insufficient incoming video. Those warnings help narrow down ingest and configuration problems; they do not independently diagnose CPU contention on the VPS.
Reduce the bitrate to match the VPS’s real outbound capacity
A speed test on your home connection says nothing about the VPS’s path to YouTube. Measure sustained outbound capacity from the VPS itself, ideally toward the service and route used for the stream. Choose a video bitrate that stays below the capacity the server can reliably sustain, leaving room for fluctuations and audio.

OBS’s troubleshooting guide, published 2024-09-30, offers 75% of total upload speed as a bitrate starting point. Treat that as a heuristic, not a guaranteed safe setting for a particular VPS. OBS also advises lowering video bitrate when dropped frames occur. The OBS guide notes that dropped frames are unlikely to be caused by OBS itself.
If bitrate reductions are not enough, reduce resolution or frame rate and retest. Lowering bitrate trades image quality for a more sustainable delivery rate; lowering resolution reduces image detail; lowering frame rate makes motion less smooth. There is no universal optimum for a low-cost Indian VPS: the right choice depends on its measured outbound capacity and encoding performance.

Choose a profile using YouTube’s encoder guidance
YouTube’s encoder-settings guidance, accessed 2026-10-03, recommends the following video bitrates. The page’s publication or update year is not visible, so these are platform recommendations rather than a guarantee that a particular VPS can encode or deliver them.

The table is not a VPS benchmark or a set of mandatory minimum targets for every stream. If the VPS cannot reliably sustain a recommended bitrate, select a lower-demand profile and verify the result using OBS and YouTube health information.

Check OBS and YouTube ingest settings
Before another test, compare the encoder configuration with YouTube’s documented ingest guidance. YouTube specifies constant bitrate (CBR), supports H.264, H.265, and AV1 in its guidance, recommends a two-second keyframe frequency, and says not to exceed four seconds. Its page also provides frame-rate and resolution guidance; use settings supported by your encoder and chosen profile.
- In OBS, open Settings → Output and inspect the streaming encoder and video bitrate. Set the encoder to CBR and choose a bitrate supported by the VPS’s stable outbound path.
- Open Settings → Video and check the output resolution and frame rate. Reduce either if the stream still cannot be delivered reliably or OBS reports rendering or encoding lag.
- Check the encoder’s keyframe interval/frequency and set it to two seconds where available. Do not exceed four seconds, per YouTube’s guidance.
- Confirm that the selected codec and the other ingest settings match YouTube’s current encoder guidance.
- Start a representative test stream with similar audio and motion to the intended broadcast. Monitor OBS statistics and YouTube stream health before relying on the configuration for a live event.
YouTube’s health messages can flag high or low bitrate, an unsupported codec, a keyframe interval that is too long, or insufficient incoming video. Use each warning to check its corresponding configuration or delivery condition; none alone establishes that the VPS CPU is the cause.

Use dynamic bitrate only as a fallback
OBS can dynamically lower bitrate when the connection cannot keep up. This may reduce network drops while conditions vary, but it also reduces stream quality and does not repair the underlying connection problem. OBS’s troubleshooting guide says this option should be used only when the connection issue cannot be resolved. Prefer identifying and fixing the capacity or route problem, then retest.
Troubleshoot persistent drops on the VPS
- OBS shows network dropped frames: Recheck sustained outbound capacity from the VPS and lower video bitrate. If necessary, lower resolution or frame rate. Check YouTube health messages for ingest warnings.
- YouTube reports high bitrate: Reduce the configured bitrate and verify it remains within the connection’s stable capacity.
- YouTube reports low bitrate or insufficient incoming video: Check for unstable delivery, an excessively low configured rate, or an interruption in the encoder-to-ingest feed. Review OBS statistics and the stream-health detail together.
- YouTube reports unsupported codec or long keyframe frequency: Check the selected codec and keyframe interval against YouTube’s encoder guidance; use a two-second interval and do not exceed four seconds.
- OBS reports encoding or rendering lag instead of network drops: Inspect the VPS’s actual CPU usage, quota, and signs of throttling, as well as OBS logs. Lower encoding or rendering demand where appropriate, then test again.
- The issue persists despite lower bitrate: Investigate CPU quota or throttling and measure the VPS-to-ingest network route. The published guidance cited here does not test particular Indian VPS vendors, establish a universal CPU threshold, or identify one provider as a fix.
