If your YouTube livestream stops when your computer sleeps, keep the computer running the streaming source awake for the whole broadcast. You can usually turn off the display separately; on a laptop, also check what happens when you close the lid. Keep the computer plugged in when possible, then verify the stream in YouTube Live Control Room rather than assuming a setting change fixed it.
Why sleep can disconnect a YouTube live stream
For an encoder-based broadcast, the encoder sends video to YouTube through the configured stream URL and key. If the computer running that encoder sleeps, it may stop sending the feed. Turning off the display is different: a black screen can be compatible with streaming if the computer itself stays awake, but confirm that behavior on your device and setup.

These steps focus on computer-based streaming, including OBS or another encoder. If you are streaming directly from a browser webcam or another method, first identify what is actually sending the video; encoder-specific advice may not apply.

Prevent sleep on Windows 11
Set the plugged-in sleep timeout
- Connect the computer to power if practical.
- Open Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts.
- Set the plugged-in Make my device sleep after control so the PC will not sleep during the planned broadcast. Choose the screen-off timeout independently if you want the display to turn off.
- Check that you changed the plugged-in setting, not only the battery setting. If you plan to stream on battery, configure that behavior too and account for the battery running down.
Microsoft lists different default timeouts depending on device type. On modern standby devices, its published defaults are 5 minutes before screen-off and 5 minutes before sleep when plugged in, and 3 minutes for each on battery. For S3 devices, the listed defaults are 5 minutes before screen-off and 15 minutes before sleep when plugged in, and 3 minutes before screen-off and 10 minutes before sleep on battery. Check lid-close and power-button actions
A laptop may sleep when its lid closes even if its idle sleep timeout is long. Microsoft notes that many PCs, especially laptops and tablets, sleep when the lid closes or the power button is pressed. Check the lid-close and power-button actions in Windows power settings, and do not close the lid or press the button during the broadcast unless you have confirmed the configured action will not put the PC to sleep. Keep a Mac awake with its display off
Apple documents a power setting for supported Macs that prevents automatic sleep while the display is off. On a Mac laptop, look in System Settings > Battery for Prevent automatic sleeping on power adapter when the display is off. On a Mac desktop, look in System Settings > Energy for Prevent automatic sleeping when the display is off. The exact setting and navigation can differ by Mac model and macOS version. Verify the stream before relying on the setting
- Before starting, open YouTube Live Control Room and check the encoder preview. Confirm the event can be accessed as intended.
- Start the broadcast and observe the Live Control Room and live watch page after the display turns off. Confirm that video and audio continue rather than inferring success from the computer’s screen.
- Monitor stream quality during the event. If your encoder provides a local recording, check that separately as well; a local archive and the YouTube feed are different outputs.
- After YouTube indicates the event has ended, stop the encoder.

Troubleshooting if the stream still disconnects
- The stream stops as soon as the display goes dark: Check whether the computer is sleeping, not merely turning off its display. Revisit the plugged-in sleep timeout and verify the change while watching the stream.
- The stream stops when you close the lid: Check the lid-close action. Lid behavior can trigger sleep separately from the idle timeout.
- It works on battery but fails when plugged in, or the reverse: Review the setting for the power state you are actually using. Windows separates plugged-in and battery timeouts.
- The computer is awake but YouTube loses the feed: Sleep is not established as the cause. Investigate the network connection, encoder state, or a platform-side problem separately; the power-setting change alone cannot diagnose these failures.
- The setting label is missing or differs: Platform menus and available options vary across hardware and OS versions. Confirm the operating system and device configuration, and consult the relevant current support page rather than assuming all PCs or Macs behave identically.
