First identify where the red indicator appears: YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room stream status and a viewer’s Buffer Health reading in Stats for nerds are different signals, so they do not have the same fix. Read the exact Live Control Room warning if it is the creator-side status; if viewers are seeing buffering, investigate playback, network and latency as well as the encoder.
First: identify which indicator is red
Live Control Room stream status
In YouTube Studio, open the stream in Live Control Room and note the exact stream-status warning and when it appears. YouTube says stream status provides specific error messages and instructions; use that wording as your starting point rather than assuming what a red indicator means. See YouTube’s live-stream metrics guidance.

Viewer-side Buffer Health
If a viewer means the Buffer Health figure in Stats for nerds, that is player-side read-ahead data, not the creator-side stream-status message. YouTube explains that the player holds extra live data to handle changes in internet speed. Ask whether the issue affects multiple viewers and whether it also occurs on another device or network. YouTube’s live-stream latency guidance explains how latency affects this buffer.

Diagnose the evidence before changing settings
| What you observe | Likely area to investigate | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| An exact warning in Live Control Room | Creator-side stream, ingest or encoder status | Follow the warning; check encoder output, bitrate, keyframes and upload capacity. |
| Dropped frames in OBS | Connection from the encoder toward YouTube ingest | Check sustainable upload capacity and encoder output. OBS advises checking dropped frames first in its stream connection troubleshooting guide. |
| No OBS dropped frames, but some viewers buffer | Viewer playback, device, network or latency | Compare reports across viewers, networks and devices, then review the stream latency setting. |
| The problem repeats at the same point in every loop | The source segment or loop transition is a possibility to test, not a confirmed cause | Inspect that segment and transition; isolate them with a clean copy or simplified loop. |
A prerecorded file can continue playing locally while the upload or a viewer’s playback has a separate problem. A loop boundary is worth examining only when the timing points to it; looping itself is not established as a cause of a red stream-health status.

Check encoder settings and upload capacity
YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate, testing before going live with audio and video motion representative of the actual stream, and monitoring stream health during the event. Its encoder settings and bitrate recommendations specify constant bitrate (CBR) and a recommended two-second keyframe frequency, with an interval no longer than four seconds. Choose bitrate for the codec, resolution and frame rate actually being sent; do not copy a number from a different configuration.
| H.264 output configuration | YouTube-recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 6 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular connection can sustain the stream. The same encoder-settings page gives different recommendations for AV1 and H.265. Test the available upload rate and leave enough capacity for a stable sustained upload; a brief speed-test peak does not establish that a connection will hold throughout a long stream.

Use OBS dropped frames to separate upload trouble from playback trouble
- Check OBS Statistics while streaming and note the dropped-frame counter. OBS recommends checking this first when diagnosing streaming connection problems.
- If dropped frames are accumulating, investigate the connection to the ingest server and whether the upload can sustain the configured bitrate. Verify the encoder’s output settings against YouTube’s recommendation for the actual codec, resolution and frame rate.
- If the counter is not showing drops but viewers still buffer, do not treat the encoder as cleared of every possible issue or assume it is the cause. Compare viewer devices and networks, and examine latency and playback reports separately.
- Change one relevant setting at a time. Compare Live Control Room status, OBS statistics and viewer reports after each controlled test. Changing bitrate, resolution, latency and the loop file together makes it harder to identify what helped.
Change latency only for a viewer-buffering symptom
YouTube says lower latency leaves the player with less read-ahead buffer, which can make playback more vulnerable to fluctuations between encoder and player. For a prerecorded loop that does not need real-time interaction, compare the current setting with Normal latency in a controlled test. YouTube describes Normal latency as the highest-quality option for viewers with the lowest amount of buffering for non-interactive streams. Ultra-low latency is intended for highly interactive streams and may increase the chance of buffering; YouTube describes it as typically producing latency under five seconds for most viewers, not as a guarantee.

Inspect the loop file when timing implicates it
If the symptom reliably returns at the same timestamp or loop transition, inspect that source segment and the transition. Test a clean copy or a simplified loop while keeping other variables steady. If the warning occurs at unrelated times or viewers on different networks report buffering, prioritize the corresponding stream-health, connection or playback evidence instead. A local loop continuing smoothly only confirms local playback, not successful delivery to YouTube or every viewer.

If you want to change how a continuous prerecorded YouTube stream is run, StreamNeo is a cloud service for uploaded videos: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops from the cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on. That can remove the need to keep a local playback machine running, but it does not establish that changing services will cure the specific warning you are seeing.
