YouTube Live Stream Bitrate Settings for a Podcast With a Still Image

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a podcast livestream with a still image, a sensible starting point is 720p at 30 fps, H.264, 8 Mbps video, CBR, AAC stereo at 128 kbps, and a 2-second keyframe interval. YouTube recommends 8 Mbps for H.264 at 720p30; it does not publish a separate lower bitrate preset for a static image. If your upload connection is stable enough, 1080p30 is another option, with YouTube recommending 14 Mbps H.264 video.

Does a still image need a lower bitrate?

Not according to YouTube’s published live-encoder guidance. Its bitrate recommendations are organized by codec, resolution, and frame rate, rather than by how much movement appears in the picture. A still image may be visually simple, but the reviewed YouTube guidance does not give it a special bitrate setting. Use the recommendation for your stream’s actual codec and video format instead. YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate table is the reference.

The starting preset below is an editorial choice for an audio-led show: it uses YouTube’s H.264 recommendation for 720p30 without requiring the higher video bitrate of 1080p30. It is not a special YouTube still-image preset.

Recommended starting settings for a podcast

Setting Starting value Why it matters
Ingestion resolution and frame rate 720p30 A practical starting format for a podcast whose visual is static. Choose 1080p30 if you prefer the higher resolution and your connection can sustain its higher recommended bitrate.
Video codec H.264 Use the bitrate row matching the encoder codec and selected resolution/frame rate.
Video bitrate 8 Mbps for 720p30 YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrate for this format.
Rate control CBR (constant bitrate) YouTube recommends constant bitrate encoding for live streams.
Keyframe interval 2 seconds YouTube recommends 2-second keyframes and says not to exceed 4 seconds.
Audio codec AAC stereo A straightforward choice for stereo spoken-word audio; YouTube lists AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS.
Audio bitrate and sample rate 128 kbps; 44.1 kHz stereo YouTube’s advanced settings recommend these stereo-audio values.
Protocol RTMPS YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transmission to its servers.

These are encoder settings at ingestion, not a promise that every viewer will receive video at the same bitrate. YouTube transcodes a live stream into multiple playback formats, so viewers may receive different output formats. YouTube’s encoder guidance explains the recommendations.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

720p30 or 1080p30: which should you use?

Both values below are YouTube’s listed H.264 ingest recommendations, not measured results or guarantees of quality. Pick the format your connection can deliver reliably; bitrate alone does not determine whether a stream will be stable.

Format Minimum H.264 bitrate Recommended H.264 bitrate Best fit
720p30 3 Mbps 8 Mbps A practical starting choice for an audio-led show with a still visual and a more modest connection.
1080p30 5 Mbps 14 Mbps Choose when the higher resolution matters to you and your upload connection can sustain the higher rate with headroom.
480p30 0.4 Mbps 4 Mbps A lower-resolution fallback if the connection cannot reliably sustain a higher format.
360p30 0.4 Mbps 4 Mbps A further lower-resolution fallback.

These figures are for H.264 at the listed resolution and frame rate. YouTube’s recommendations differ for AV1 and H.265, so check the appropriate row if your encoder uses either codec rather than applying the H.264 numbers to it. The values come from YouTube’s live encoder recommendations.

How much upload speed should you leave available?

YouTube recommends leaving 20% room above the total stream bitrate and accounting for a backup stream if you use one. For the 720p30 starting preset, adding 8 Mbps video and 128 kbps audio gives about 8.13 Mbps of stream bitrate; adding 20% headroom yields roughly 9.8 Mbps of upload capacity. That is arithmetic from YouTube’s guidance, not a separate upload-speed target published by YouTube. Check your connection with a speed test and avoid treating its peak result as guaranteed sustained capacity. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

For a 1080p30 H.264 stream at the recommended 14 Mbps video bitrate, add the audio bitrate and then apply the same 20% headroom guidance; the resulting estimate is about 17 Mbps, before any backup stream. If your available upload capacity varies, lower the ingestion format or bitrate rather than running the encoder at the edge of what the connection can manage.

Set up and test the stream before going public

  1. Choose the encoder format. In your streaming software, select H.264, 720p30, CBR, and 8 Mbps video as the starting preset. If you select 1080p30 instead, use YouTube’s 14 Mbps H.264 recommendation only if your connection can support it.
  2. Set the keyframes and audio. Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds, AAC stereo at 128 kbps, and a 44.1 kHz stereo sample rate. Keep the keyframe interval within YouTube’s maximum of 4 seconds.
  3. Use RTMPS and the correct stream key. In YouTube’s live-stream settings, use the server and stream key provided for the broadcast in your encoder. Keep the key private; anyone who obtains it may be able to send a stream to your channel.
  4. Run a private or unlisted test before the event. Include the actual podcast audio path and any movement you plan to show, even if the primary visual is still. YouTube advises testing before going live and monitoring stream health and messages during the event. See Manage live stream settings and Streaming tips.
  5. Check health before starting the public show. Confirm audio is audible and in sync, the still image is present, and the connection is not dropping frames or triggering health warnings. If the test is unstable, reduce the resolution or bitrate and test again.

Latency: choose it for the kind of show you host

Lower latency can increase buffering, according to YouTube. For a prerecorded or mostly one-way podcast where you do not need to respond to viewers in real time, the lowest-latency option may not be worth that trade-off. If audience interaction matters, choose the latency mode that fits the conversation and verify playback during a test. YouTube describes the trade-off in its streaming tips.

Troubleshooting common podcast stream problems

  • Stream health warns about bitrate or dropped frames: Check that upload capacity can sustain the video and audio bitrate plus headroom. Try 720p30 at 8 Mbps instead of 1080p30 at 14 Mbps, or reduce the bitrate and test again.
  • The encoder shows unstable upload speed: Run another speed test under the conditions you will use for the show. Leave YouTube’s recommended 20% room and include backup-stream bandwidth if applicable.
  • Audio is missing, too quiet, or distorted: Check that the intended microphone or mixer is selected, that the encoder is sending AAC or MP3 audio, and that the audio level is not muted or clipping. Verify the actual audio in a test broadcast rather than relying only on the encoder’s meter.
  • Audio and picture are out of sync: Check the encoder’s audio/video sync settings and the audio path. Test a representative segment before the event; a still picture will not reveal sync problems on its own.
  • The image is present but the stream will not connect: Confirm that the encoder is using the current YouTube server and stream key for the intended broadcast, and that RTMPS is configured correctly. Do not share the stream key publicly.
  • The stream works for some viewers but not at the chosen quality: YouTube transcodes live video for different playback formats, and viewer playback may vary. Check the stream health and test playback rather than assuming every viewer receives the ingestion bitrate.
