How to Make a Podcast Live Stream on YouTube With Episode Artwork

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To livestream a podcast on YouTube with its episode artwork, create or schedule a live event in YouTube Studio, send a video feed from an encoder, and place the artwork in that feed as a still image or graphic. You can also use the episode image as the event thumbnail, but that is a separate placement: podcast artwork is square, while a video thumbnail is generally 16:9. YouTube does not automatically turn a podcast cover image into a live stream.

Know which image goes where

YouTube treats a podcast as a playlist and each episode as a video; an MP3 alone is not a YouTube podcast episode. The podcast playlist has its own square artwork, while the live event or replay has a video thumbnail. You can also display episode artwork inside the live video itself, for example as a still visual sent by encoder software.

Placement Purpose Shape and guidance
Podcast playlist artwork Identifies the podcast series in YouTube Square (1:1); YouTube recommends 1280×1280 pixels.
Live event or replay thumbnail Represents the individual video in YouTube surfaces Generally 16:9 for a regular video thumbnail. YouTube’s custom-thumbnail guidance says podcast playlists should use 1:1 artwork instead.
Visual inside the stream Appears while viewers watch the live video Use a still image or designed visual in the encoder’s video feed; YouTube does not automatically make a live video from the podcast artwork.

YouTube permits image formats such as JPG and PNG for custom thumbnails. File-size limits depend on the device and placement, so check YouTube’s current thumbnail requirements before uploading. For the podcast playlist image, see Create a podcast in YouTube Studio.

Check that you can stream

YouTube’s stated requirements include a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days; the streamer must be at least 16. Check the current live-streaming eligibility requirements for your channel and location before scheduling. YouTube offers mobile, webcam, and encoder methods. For a produced, audio-led show that needs a still artwork visual, external microphone, or overlays, an encoder is usually the most flexible option.

Make the live stream with an encoder

  1. Prepare the episode and visual. Have the audio ready and make a video scene that displays the episode artwork or other appropriate graphic. If you want a camera shot or animated elements, add those as part of the encoder scene. Artwork alone is not the incoming live feed; the encoder must send video as well as audio.
  2. Create or schedule the event. In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go Live to open Live Control Room, then create an event or schedule it for later. Add the title, audience and other event details, and set the live-event thumbnail separately from the image used for the podcast playlist.
  3. Copy the ingest details. In the event’s stream settings, copy the stream URL and stream key. Enter them in the encoder’s server/URL and key fields. Treat the key as a secret: YouTube Help describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Do not share it publicly; reset it in YouTube Studio if it is exposed. See Manage live stream settings.
  4. Connect and configure audio and video. Choose the artwork scene as the video source and select the intended microphone or audio input. A USB microphone can be useful for clearer speech, but it is optional; YouTube says expensive equipment is not required to get started. Confirm that the encoder is sending both a picture and clean audio.
  5. Set a stable output quality. Select a resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate that your computer and upload connection can sustain. Use YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions rather than relying on a generic bitrate figure: appropriate values vary by format and frame rate. For a mostly static podcast image, a high frame rate is rarely needed for the artwork itself, but choose settings that match any motion or camera footage and YouTube’s supported recommendations.
  6. Start the encoder and check the preview. Start sending the feed, then wait for the incoming video and audio preview in Live Control Room. Confirm that the artwork is legible, not cropped unexpectedly, and that speech is audible before starting the event.
  7. Start the event. When the preview and stream health are satisfactory, select the option in Live Control Room to go live. Keep an eye on stream health and audio during the broadcast.

For YouTube’s full workflow, see Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Test the artwork, audio and connection before the show

  • Check the image at viewing size. Small text can disappear on phones. Keep episode titles and logos within the visible area, and preview the actual encoder output rather than assuming a square playlist cover will fill a 16:9 frame without cropping or empty space.
  • Listen to a test recording or private/unlisted test. Check voice level, background noise, and whether music or other audio is balanced. Use the same microphone and scene you plan to use during the event.
  • Test the outgoing connection. Upload speed matters, not download speed. Run a speed test and leave headroom above the encoder’s bitrate so normal network variation does not interrupt the feed. YouTube’s streaming tips explain connection checks and monitoring.
  • Watch the preview and health indicators. YouTube recommends a pre-event test using audio and movement similar to the planned stream, and monitoring stream health while live.

Choose webcam or encoder

Method Best fit Trade-off
Webcam A straightforward computer-based talk with a camera and simple audio Fast to set up, but offers less control for designed still-image scenes and external production.
Encoder A show using episode artwork, overlays, a separate microphone or other audio/video gear More setup: configure the encoder, stream URL and key, then validate the preview.
Mobile A stream created directly from a compatible phone Convenient for a camera-led broadcast; less suited to a carefully produced artwork-led episode unless the phone setup supplies the intended visual.

YouTube documents all three methods in its live-streaming overview. You do not need costly equipment simply to begin; choose the method that fits the production you actually want.

Keep the podcast eligible and the stream rights-safe

Make sure you have the necessary rights to the episode audio, music, artwork, photographs and any other material in the broadcast. A still image does not change the copyright status of the audio. Follow YouTube’s applicable Community Guidelines and copyright processes, and avoid assuming that a live stream or podcast format is exempt. If you are building a podcast in YouTube Studio, organize episodes as videos in the podcast playlist rather than treating an audio file by itself as the YouTube episode.

Troubleshoot common problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check
No preview appears The encoder is not sending, or the stream URL/key is incorrect. Confirm the event’s current URL and key in YouTube Studio, re-enter them in the encoder, and verify the encoder is actively streaming.
Preview appears but the event is not live The feed is reaching Live Control Room, but the event has not been started there. Check the preview and stream health, then start the event from Live Control Room when ready.
Video or audio stutters The connection may not sustain the selected bitrate, or the encoder may be overloaded. Check outbound upload speed, leave bitrate headroom, and reduce output settings if needed. Verify the selected settings against YouTube’s current encoder recommendations.
Artwork is cropped or hard to read A square cover is being fitted into a video frame with a different shape, or text is too small. Adjust the encoder scene to show the complete image within the video canvas, or create a landscape visual for the live feed. Keep the playlist artwork and video thumbnail as separate assets when their placements need different proportions.
Viewers cannot hear the host The wrong audio input is selected, the microphone is muted, or levels are too low. Check the encoder’s audio source and meters, unmute the intended input, and make another test before the event.
Stream key may be exposed The key was shared or shown in a recording or screenshot. Regenerate or reset the key in YouTube Studio and update the encoder with the new key.

If your format is an uploaded, pre-recorded episode that you want to keep playing as a YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a live camera feed. The computer at home does not have to stay on; StreamNeo loops the video in the cloud, supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. Start at StreamNeo’s free trial.
