The essential steps are to enable live streaming on the channel, create an encoder broadcast in YouTube Studio, connect OBS with the YouTube server URL and stream key, configure and test the church’s audio and video, then monitor both OBS and YouTube Live Control Room. One important limit: YouTube says a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all, so an uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast is not a dependable way to create a complete replay archive.
Before you start: decide what “24/7” needs to mean
There are two different goals: keeping a viewer-facing live feed available continuously, and preserving a reliable recording of everything that was broadcast. A single, uninterrupted OBS session can serve the first goal, but YouTube does not guarantee a complete archive or full DVR rewind for a stream that runs beyond 12 hours. If replays matter, schedule shorter broadcasts with planned transitions and make a local recording as a second copy. YouTube’s current guidance on archives and DVR is in its archive help and DVR help.
- For uninterrupted availability: OBS must keep sending the feed, and someone needs a plan for power, internet, equipment, and stream interruptions.
- For dependable replays: use sessions shorter than 12 hours, test how transitions work, and record locally.
- For recorded worship content: an uploaded playlist can run as a continuous feed, but permission to broadcast and archive the music still matters.
What you need
- A YouTube channel that is verified and has no live-streaming restriction within the past 90 days. YouTube’s current eligibility guidance also lists a limit of 10 active streams per channel and three per stream key; see Get started with live streaming.
- A computer running OBS Studio, connected to the church’s camera and audio system as needed. Whether you need a capture card or audio interface depends on the equipment’s outputs and the computer’s inputs; neither is universally required.
- A stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the chosen stream settings. A higher resolution is not useful if the connection cannot sustain it.
- The YouTube server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio. Treat the stream key as a credential: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a broadcast to your channel.
- Rights to transmit the music and other content in the feed, including any planned replay or archive use.
Configure YouTube and OBS
- Enable live streaming and check eligibility. In YouTube Studio, confirm that live streaming is available for your verified channel and that there is no current restriction preventing you from going live. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility page describes the requirements.
- Create or schedule an encoder broadcast. In YouTube Studio, create a live stream using an encoder. Keep the Live Control Room open; it is where you manage the viewer-facing broadcast and check its preview and stream health. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions describe this workflow.
- Copy the server URL and stream key. Enter them in OBS under Settings > Stream, selecting YouTube as the service if that option is available in your OBS version. Do not publish the key, place it in a public document, or show it on screen. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.
- Add and check the church’s sources. In OBS, configure the appropriate camera or video input and audio source from the existing church system. Confirm that the preview shows the intended picture and that the meters respond to the intended sound. The exact hardware connection depends on the camera, mixer, computer, and operating system.
- Set a conservative video profile. For ordinary worship video, a reasonable starting point is H.264 at 1080p30, not 4K or a high frame rate by default. YouTube’s current encoder recommendations list 10 Mbps for H.264 1080p30, CBR, and a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds). These are platform recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular church’s connection can sustain them.
- Configure audio and transport. YouTube recommends stereo AAC at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. Its current settings guidance recommends RTMPS; use it when available in your encoder setup. YouTube accepts H.264, H.265, or AV1 video up to 60 fps, but a higher specification should be chosen only if the equipment and connection reliably support it. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate recommendations.
- Run a representative test before going public. Start the encoder and inspect the YouTube Live Control Room preview. Include the kinds of movement, lighting, and audio levels expected in the real feed, then review stream health. OBS recommends its Tools > Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point for basic settings. The OBS Help Portal explains that an increasing dropped-frames counter with a yellow or red connection indicator can mean the connection is unstable or cannot keep up with the selected bitrate.
- Start the broadcast and verify both sides. Follow the YouTube Live Control Room prompt to go live, then confirm that the viewer-facing stream is playing and that sound and picture remain correct. OBS sends the encoder feed; YouTube manages the live broadcast. A successful preview alone is not the same as confirming the public stream.
Plan for an ongoing stream, not just a successful start
OBS is an encoder, not an unattended continuity guarantee. If the computer shuts down, OBS stops, or the network fails, the feed can be interrupted. The reviewed YouTube and OBS guidance does not prescribe a staffing model or promise automatic restart, so assign real people and procedures rather than assuming the stream will recover by itself.
- Name who checks the picture, audio, and YouTube stream health, and how often they check during the broadcast.
- Decide who responds to an OBS crash, power loss, internet failure, or YouTube warning, and how that person can access the computer and channel.
- Consider backup power or internet only in light of the actual site’s risks. A UPS cannot prevent an internet outage, equipment failure, or a platform enforcement action.
- If replay is important, run a local recording and verify that it is being saved where expected. Test planned session endings and restarts privately or as unlisted broadcasts before relying on them.
Make worship music rights part of the setup
Do not assume that a church’s general music license automatically clears every song, recording, territory, live transmission, or replay use. YouTube says that live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, and a stream may be interrupted or terminated if detected content remains. Where a church has a license, the rights owner may still need to add the channel to its Content ID allowlist; a license alone does not necessarily prevent an interruption. Claims may also be made against an archived live video after the broadcast. See YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams and livestream terms.

- Check permissions for the specific songs, arrangements, and sound recordings in the planned service or playlist.
- Confirm that the permissions cover live transmission and any replay or local archive use, as well as the territories where the stream will be available.
- If a licensed work is being blocked or interrupted, contact the relevant rights owner or licensing provider about YouTube Content ID allowlisting; do not assume that changing OBS settings will resolve a rights match.
Will YouTube save a 24/7 worship stream?
Do not count on one broadcast longer than 12 hours being saved in full. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured at all; DVR rewind may also be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. The threshold and behavior are described in YouTube’s archive guidance and DVR guidance. For a usable archive, use shorter sessions and a local recording rather than relying on a continuous 24/7 broadcast to become a complete replay.
YouTube’s LiveStreams API includes a default live-stream resource that can exist indefinitely, but that API detail is not a promise that a particular broadcast’s archive or DVR will do so. See the LiveStreams API documentation.

Common problems and what to check
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| OBS reports increasing dropped frames, or its connection indicator turns yellow or red. | The connection to YouTube may be unstable or unable to sustain the selected bitrate. | Check the upload connection and stream health. Reduce the bitrate or choose a less demanding resolution/frame rate, then test again. OBS describes the dropped-frame indicator in its Help Portal. |
| YouTube does not show the expected preview or broadcast. | The encoder may not be sending, the broadcast may not be set up correctly, or the server URL or key may be wrong. | Confirm that the broadcast exists in Live Control Room, the correct server URL and key are entered in OBS, and OBS is actively sending. Re-copy the credentials privately if necessary. |
| The picture is visible but worship audio is missing or distorted. | The wrong OBS audio source may be selected, the mixer output may not reach the computer, or levels may be unsuitable. | Check OBS audio meters and the physical signal path from the church sound system; test with representative sound before restarting the public broadcast. |
| A broadcast ends or music is interrupted despite a license. | YouTube may have detected a third-party content match; a rights owner may need to allowlist the channel. | Review the YouTube notice and contact the relevant rights owner or licensing provider about the specific content and channel. Refer to YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance. |
| A long broadcast has no complete replay, or rewind is unavailable. | The stream exceeded the 12-hour archive threshold or DVR is limited for a long stream. | Use shorter sessions for future replays and maintain a local recording. YouTube’s archive help warns that an over-12-hour stream may not be captured at all. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If the church wants a continuous YouTube feed from prerecorded worship videos rather than a live camera service, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos or playlists from the cloud. The setup is: upload the recording or build a playlist, add the YouTube stream key once, then go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. Each slot includes 10 GB of storage, pooled across active slots, and streams the uploaded file as made up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. Music permissions and YouTube’s copyright rules still apply. It streams to YouTube and plays uploaded video; it is not a way to broadcast a live camera service. Start the free first day.
