To broadcast a pre-recorded coding tutorial as a YouTube Live event, create or schedule a stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, connect an encoder with the event’s stream URL and key, and send the video file through that encoder. For a typical H.264 tutorial, YouTube recommends 5 Mbps at 1080p30 or 6 Mbps at 1080p60, with a 2-second keyframe interval. Preview and test the full playback path before going live.
What you need before setting up the stream
YouTube’s encoder workflow lets you send a prerecorded file as the video input for a live event. You do not need to upload the file as a regular YouTube video first. You do need an encoder that can play or supply the file while sending it to YouTube; the precise playback controls depend on the encoder you choose.
- A YouTube channel that is verified and has no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. YouTube’s general setup guidance also says streamers must be at least 16. YouTube: Get started with live streaming
- The prerecorded tutorial file, with its video and audio checked from beginning to end.
- An encoder that can play the file and connect to YouTube Live.
- A stable upload connection capable of sustaining the encoder’s selected bitrate.
YouTube documents the encoder workflow and a specialized prerecorded-playback hardware option, but it does not establish that any one desktop encoder is required. Confirm that your chosen software or hardware can play your file format and resolution before scheduling the event.
Create or schedule the YouTube Live event
- In YouTube Studio, select Create, then Go Live to open Live Control Room.
- Create a stream for an immediate broadcast, or open the Manage tab and schedule one. Scheduling gives you an event page to share and can let viewers set reminders. You can edit the scheduled event’s settings before it starts. See YouTube: Create a live stream with an encoder.
- Enter the event’s title and description, choose the relevant category and audience details, and select its visibility: public, private, or unlisted. Check the event page after saving so the intended audience can access it.
- Set tags only when they help identify commonly misspelled terms. YouTube says tags otherwise have limited value for discovery; they are not a substitute for a clear title and description. See YouTube: Manage live stream settings.
Connect the encoder and load the tutorial
- In Live Control Room, locate the event’s stream URL and stream key. Copy both into the corresponding fields in your encoder. YouTube describes stream keys as the equivalent of a stream’s “password and address,” so do not publish or share the key. If you think it has been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder with the replacement.
- Choose RTMPS ingestion if the encoder supports it. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted version of RTMP. Select a YouTube-specific preset when the encoder offers one, then confirm its output resolution, frame rate, video codec, audio codec, bitrate, and keyframe settings.
- Load the prerecorded tutorial as the encoder’s input. Check that it starts at the intended point, that the audio is audible and in sync, and that any transitions or end-of-file behavior are suitable for a live event.
- Start the encoder and wait for its signal to appear in Live Control Room. Inspect the preview and audio meters before selecting Go live for the scheduled event. YouTube advises setting up the encoder in advance and checking the preview and stream quality. See YouTube: Manage live stream settings and YouTube: Manage live stream settings.
Recommended encoder settings for a coding tutorial
Match output to the source file: avoid choosing a higher resolution or frame rate than the tutorial actually contains just to raise the number shown in the settings. YouTube transcodes the incoming stream for viewers, and its recommendations are starting points—not a guarantee that a particular encoder or connection will perform well.

| Setting | Recommended starting point | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Video codec and rate control | H.264 with CBR for YouTube’s listed RTMP/RTMPS settings. | A consistent bitrate helps keep the upload predictable. |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps video bitrate. | Suitable as a starting point for a typical 1080p30 H.264 tutorial. |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps video bitrate. | Use only when the source and intended presentation benefit from 60 fps. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds. | Set this in the encoder’s video or advanced output settings. |
| Audio | AAC or MP3. | Check that the encoder is sending the tutorial’s narration and system audio as intended. |
| Ingestion protocol | RTMPS where supported. | It is YouTube’s recommended encrypted alternative to RTMP. |
These figures are YouTube Help recommendations checked on October 3, 2026; the pages do not state a publication date for the recommendations. For other resolutions or frame rates, use YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance rather than extrapolating the 1080p figures. Test from the same network and setup you plan to use live, and leave upload headroom rather than running the connection at its limit.
Choose latency and DVR for the viewing experience
Latency
For a prerecorded lesson with little or no live interaction, the lowest available latency may not be useful. YouTube notes that lower latency can increase buffering and is less important when you are not interacting with viewers. Choose a setting that suits the stream’s real-time needs and test playback before the event. See YouTube: Manage live stream settings.

DVR and archiving
DVR lets viewers pause and rewind while the broadcast is live. YouTube says DVR may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours; streams under 12 hours are automatically archived according to its encoder setup help. Decide whether pause-and-rewind is useful for your lesson, and do not assume a long broadcast will preserve every DVR control. See YouTube: Manage live stream settings and YouTube: Create a live stream with an encoder.
Test the complete path before viewers arrive
- Play the file through the encoder from its opening, and listen for narration, desktop audio, clipping, silence, and sync problems.
- Confirm that Live Control Room receives the expected resolution and frame rate and that its preview displays the correct video.
- Check the scheduled event’s title, description, visibility, audience settings, and start time.
- Use a connection that can reliably sustain the selected bitrate; if the preview buffers or the encoder reports dropped frames, lower the bitrate or use a more stable connection and test again.
- Keep the stream key private. Reset it in Live Control Room if compromised, then replace it in the encoder.
- Start the encoder early enough to inspect the preview. Start the event in YouTube when ready, then end the event in YouTube and stop the encoder when the broadcast is over.
Copyright and monetization checks for coding tutorials
Being prerecorded does not exempt a live broadcast from YouTube’s copyright rules. Before streaming, check that you have rights to the tutorial, music, code demonstrations, screen recordings, and any third-party material included in it. YouTube may detect copyrighted material in a live stream; use material you own, have permission to use, or can otherwise lawfully include.

Also make the event’s title and description accurate about what viewers will see. Replaying a tutorial as a live event does not by itself establish eligibility for monetization, nor does it guarantee discovery or audience growth. Review YouTube’s current policies for copyright and monetization and reused content before relying on revenue from the broadcast.

If you specifically need standalone scheduled playback without a computer, YouTube’s hardware encoder listing names the AJA HELO Plus. The listing describes an H.264 encoder with optional AJA PlayToStream functionality for scheduling prerecorded media and streaming it directly to YouTube Live. It is a specialized option, not a requirement for an ordinary computer-based encoder workflow; check the manufacturer’s current compatibility and availability details before choosing it.
