YouTube Live Settings for 1440p at 30 FPS: Bitrate and Playlist Setup

For YouTube Live at 1440p and 30 fps, choose 15 Mbps for AV1/H.265 or 21 Mbps for H.264, then set CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval, and adequate upload headroom.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a 1440p (2560 × 1440), 30 fps YouTube Live stream, use a video bitrate of 15 Mbps with AV1 or H.265/HEVC, or 21 Mbps with H.264. YouTube’s current live-encoder guidance gives minimums of 5 Mbps and 7 Mbps, respectively. Set rate control to CBR, use a 2-second keyframe interval (never more than 4 seconds), and leave about 20% upload-bandwidth headroom over the complete outgoing stream bitrate. These are live-ingestion settings, not recommendations for uploading a prerecorded video file.

Recommended YouTube Live settings for 1440p at 30 fps

YouTube’s bitrate recommendations depend on the codec sending the live feed. The figures below come from its current live encoder settings guidance, accessed in 2026; they are platform recommendations and minimums, not independent performance measurements.

Setting Recommended value Notes
Resolution and frame rate 2560 × 1440 at 30 fps YouTube detects these by default. To choose them manually, create a custom stream key and enable manual settings under Stream Resolution.
Video bitrate: AV1 or H.265/HEVC 15 Mbps recommended; 5 Mbps minimum Use this row only when your encoder and workflow send AV1 or H.265.
Video bitrate: H.264 21 Mbps recommended; 7 Mbps minimum Use this row when the outgoing video codec is H.264.
Rate control CBR Constant bitrate is listed in YouTube’s encoder guidance.
Keyframe interval 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds Apply this to the video encoder.
Protocol RTMP or RTMPS YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport to Google’s servers.
Audio AAC or MP3; stereo 128 Kbps is listed as advanced guidance YouTube says 5.1 surround over RTMP/RTMPS is supported only with AAC.
SDR color Rec. 709, 8-bit Do not apply these SDR values to HDR; YouTube’s general guide lists H.265 and 10-bit for HDR.
Upload capacity At least 20% headroom over total outgoing bitrate Count audio and any backup feed as well as video. Check upload capacity rather than relying on download speed.

YouTube transcodes the live input into multiple output formats for viewers, so you send one chosen input stream rather than a separate rendition for each viewer. If your encoder offers several codecs, choose one it supports reliably and use the bitrate row that matches the codec actually sent.

How to stream a prerecorded playlist live

A video playlist is not an encoder

A YouTube content playlist is an arrangement of videos for viewers; it is not itself an input source that turns those videos into a live broadcast. To present prerecorded videos as a live feed, use an encoder or a service that sends the media to YouTube Live.

YouTube’s verified-encoder directory identifies Gyre as a cloud-based tool for 24/7 live streaming of prerecorded videos. It also lists the AJA HELO Plus hardware encoder and its PlayToStream functionality for scheduling prerecorded media directly to YouTube Live. These are listed options, not a YouTube comparison of their prices or service reliability.

HLS playlist is a different technical term

An HLS Media Playlist is a manifest of media segments that make up a continuous decodable stream; it is not a YouTube watch-page playlist. YouTube’s HLS ingestion guide supports Media Playlists and says Master Playlists are ignored. The HLS workflow requires one encoded stream at the highest desired resolution, muxed audio and video, HTTPS, and a persistent connection. See YouTube’s HLS ingestion guide if you are building an HLS-based pipeline.

Set up and test the live stream

  1. Check channel eligibility. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. All live content must follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
  2. Create or schedule the broadcast. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room, create or schedule a stream, and obtain the stream URL and key. The key functions like a password; protect it and reset it if compromised. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
  3. Configure the encoder. Set output to 1440p at 30 fps and choose the bitrate for the outgoing codec from the table above. Select CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval, and RTMPS where supported; enter the stream URL and key.
  4. Check upload capacity. Confirm that your sustained outbound bandwidth can handle the complete stream bitrate plus YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend checking upload bitrate with a speed test.
  5. Test representative content. Before the scheduled broadcast, test with audio and motion similar to the planned stream. For a prerecorded playlist, check the highest-resolution source, audio continuity, transitions, and any blank or incompatible items. The playlist-specific checks are practical workflow advice, not a YouTube-prescribed test list.
  6. Confirm preview, then go live. Connect the encoder and check the preview in Live Control Room before starting a scheduled broadcast. Monitor stream health, messages, and audio/video quality while it runs. YouTube’s encoder guide emphasizes testing before going live; its encoder settings page also covers configuration details.
  7. Plan for the archive. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its cited guidance does not promise automatic archiving for streams lasting 12 hours or longer, so do not rely on an automatic archive for those runtimes.

Latency, DVR, copyright, and archives

  • Latency: Latency is the delay between capture and playback. YouTube notes that lower latency can mean more buffering; it matters less when viewers do not need to interact in real time. Choose the latency setting for the audience and format rather than assuming the lowest value is best. See Manage live stream settings.
  • DVR: Enabling DVR lets viewers pause, rewind, and resume the live stream. Decide whether that behavior fits the broadcast.
  • Copyright and policy: Prerecorded does not mean exempt from YouTube rules. Make sure you have the rights needed for the music, video, and other material, and follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. Eligibility or enforcement status can affect the ability to stream.
  • Archive boundary: The automatic-archive statement applies to streams under 12 hours; it is not a guarantee for streams at or beyond that duration.

Common problems and fixes

  • Stream health reports instability: Check sustained upload bandwidth, including audio and any backup feed, and preserve the recommended 20% headroom. If capacity is insufficient, reduce the outgoing bitrate or resolve the network bottleneck before the broadcast.
  • Encoder cannot connect: Verify the RTMP/RTMPS stream URL and key in the encoder. Treat the key as a credential; if it may have been exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
  • Manual resolution or frame rate is unavailable: YouTube detects resolution and frame rate by default. To specify them manually, use a custom stream key and enable manual settings under Stream Resolution.
  • Video looks poor despite matching resolution: Confirm that the bitrate matches the codec being sent, that CBR is selected, and that upload capacity is adequate. Test with representative motion; a still image may not reveal problems that appear in moving content.
  • Playlist has silence, gaps, or unexpected transitions: Inspect the actual source files and sequence, including audio continuity and blank or incompatible items, before using it for a continuous feed.
  • Expected archive is missing after a long broadcast: YouTube’s stated automatic-archive behavior is for streams under 12 hours. For streams of 12 hours or more, the cited guidance does not establish that an automatic archive will be available.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is to keep prerecorded videos running continuously on YouTube without leaving a computer at home, StreamNeo runs the feed from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it plays your uploaded videos, not a camera feed, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. Your upload streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start your free first day with StreamNeo.
