If it points to resolution, use YouTube’s recommended automatic detection or match your encoder’s output to the resolution and frame rate selected in Live Control Room. The wording alone does not establish that resolution is the cause: bitrate, codec, keyframe, or stream-key problems need different fixes.
Check the exact Live Control Room message first
In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and read the full stream health or error message. “Encoder settings are incompatible” is not defined as one specific diagnosis in YouTube’s published guidance, so don’t assume every warning with similar wording means the resolution is wrong. A bitrate, codec, keyframe, or stream-key fault calls for a different correction.

YouTube’s encoder settings guidance recommends automatic resolution and frame-rate detection by default. Its third-party encoder troubleshooting guidance also covers startup problems related to stream keys.
Fix a resolution mismatch
Use automatic detection
If you are using the default stream key and have no specific reason to set a fixed resolution, leave YouTube’s automatic detection in place. YouTube says it will detect the incoming resolution and frame rate by default. Make sure your encoder is sending a valid video signal, then check the Live Control Room’s health status again.

Set a manual resolution
If you need to control the stream resolution manually, create a custom stream key and enable manual settings under Stream Resolution. Set the encoder’s output resolution and frame rate to the same values selected for the stream. A mismatch between the selected stream settings and the encoder output is the practical issue to correct.
For example, if the stream is set to 1080p at 30 frames per second, configure the encoder to send 1080p at 30 fps—not 1080p60 or a different resolution. YouTube’s guidance for Live Control Room says the encoder needs to specify resolution, frame rate, and bitrate.

Check bitrate, codec, and keyframes if the warning remains
Once resolution and frame rate match, use the specific health message to decide whether another parameter is at fault. YouTube’s recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate; the following H.264 figures are examples from its current settings table, not universal targets for every codec or stream:

If your available upload bandwidth cannot sustain the bitrate for your chosen format, reduce the resolution or frame rate and configure the encoder to match. YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, supports up to 60 fps, recommends a two-second keyframe frequency, and says not to exceed four seconds. It also recommends CBR bitrate encoding. Apply the values appropriate to the codec and configuration you actually use rather than treating the H.264 examples as a setting for all streams.

Correct a stream-key or startup error
If the full message identifies an encoder startup or stream-key problem, copy the stream key shown in Live Control Room and update the key in your encoder. This is a separate issue from resolution: changing output dimensions will not repair an incorrect or outdated key.
Test the stream before going public
- Set the stream to automatic detection, or configure the custom key’s manual resolution and frame rate to match the encoder.
- Confirm that codec, bitrate, CBR mode, and keyframe interval are appropriate for the stream.
- Start a test using representative motion and audio, then inspect the Live Control Room’s health message.
- If the warning persists, follow the full wording of the message rather than changing unrelated settings at random.
Troubleshooting by symptom
- Resolution or frame-rate mismatch: use automatic detection, or make the encoder output match the manual Stream Resolution selection.
- Bitrate warning or unstable health: check the recommendation for your codec and format; reduce resolution or frame rate if your connection cannot sustain the selected bitrate.
- Codec or keyframe warning: verify the encoder uses a supported RTMP/RTMPS codec and a keyframe frequency within YouTube’s guidance.
- Encoder will not start or key error appears: update the encoder with the stream key shown in Live Control Room.
