YouTube Live Sample Rate Settings for a 24/7 Music Stream

YouTube recommends 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps for stereo encoder audio. Here’s when 48 kHz is also a sensible choice—and what a 24/7 schedule means for archives and DVR.

For a stereo YouTube music stream, set audio to 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps, using AAC or MP3. YouTube’s encoder guidance specifies 44.1 kHz for stereo. If your existing production chain consistently runs at 48 kHz, keeping it at 48 kHz is also reasonable: YouTube’s Live Streaming API lists both 44.1 and 48 kHz as recommended rates. Official guidance does not establish an audible quality advantage for either rate.

Recommended settings for stereo music

Use these settings as the starting point for an encoder-based stereo broadcast:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Sample rate: 44.1 kHz, the rate named in YouTube’s encoder-specific recommendation for stereo.
  • Audio bitrate: 128 kbps.
  • Audio codec: AAC or MP3.
  • Delivery: YouTube recommends RTMPS for encoder streaming.

YouTube’s encoder table specifies 48 kHz for 5.1 surround audio, not stereo. Its Live Streaming API separately lists both 44.1 and 48 kHz as recommended sample rates. The API’s broader recommendation makes 48 kHz a supported choice, but it does not show that 48 kHz sounds better for music.

Should you choose 44.1 kHz or 48 kHz?

Situation Practical choice Why
Stereo stream and no established production-chain rate 44.1 kHz It matches YouTube’s encoder-specific stereo recommendation.
Your input, encoder, or established audio workflow consistently runs at 48 kHz Keep 48 kHz throughout the chain The Live Streaming API lists 48 kHz as recommended; consistency avoids an unnecessary rate change.
5.1 surround stream 48 kHz YouTube’s encoder guidance specifies 48 kHz for 5.1.

There is no evidence in YouTube’s cited guidance of a meaningful listening-quality difference between 44.1 and 48 kHz for a stereo live music stream. Treat the choice as a format and workflow decision, not a way to improve sound by itself.

Keep the audio chain and backup consistent

Choose a rate that fits the existing source and encoder configuration, and avoid needlessly mixing rates across the chain. If you use primary and backup streams, configure their audio sample rates identically: YouTube’s Live Streaming API documents an error when the two streams’ audio sample rates differ.

Before broadcasting, test with audio and movement representative of the actual programme. Watch YouTube’s stream health and respond to alerts rather than assuming that a configured sample rate guarantees a healthy broadcast. YouTube’s encoder and setup guidance covers stream configuration and testing: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions and Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Plan archives and DVR separately from sample rate

A 24/7 schedule creates an archive and rewind limitation that changing from 44.1 to 48 kHz will not fix. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. It recommends keeping a local archive as backup. YouTube also warns that DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours.

If a complete recording or dependable rewind matters, plan the broadcast and recording workflow around those limits instead of assuming a continuous 24-hour stream will produce a complete YouTube archive. See YouTube’s guidance on archiving live streams and DVR on live streams.
